It's unclear if Apple (who absolutely does NOT want to get stuck with thousands of returns for failed foldable screens!) is being super rigorous in their testing of Samsung product or if they built something to Apple's specs for these tests. I really doubt they are sending over scraps and rejects from the dumpster at the Daegu plant.

They would be able to reject those repairs the same way they have done with all their blunders. People just folded their devices in the wrong way which made them break.

Apple is obligated to explore this as an option, simply because of being a phone manufacturer. This is just standard R&D and nobody should be surprised.

Samsung is able to get away with it because they make many devices and each device sells in much smaller amounts than the iPhone, so they can afford to have a niche foldable device that only some people will buy. When Apple makes one, the demand would be much higher so they need to be sure it's rock solid otherwise there would be a huge backlash.

First off, I am all for an iPhone Fold. Second, what specs is Apple looking for? I've owned a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and have no issues with the screen at all. Is Samsung giving Apple wonky screens to slow down their progress?

Apple has historically delayed deployment of new tech until it reaches their desire design target and price target.

2017 iPhone X was the 1st to get an AMOLED display because the tech was imperfect a decade prior.

For God's sake. I do not want a foldable screen iPhone.

I know I'm not forced to buy one. But if they ever release that, I hope they also release the exact same phone with the same features but without a foldable screen.

This is the sort of foldable I'd like.

[Edit - yes, yes I know it's likely decades away / impossible - doesn't mean I can't want it.]

This would be nice. But what I really want is a 'stretchable' screen, which I could size however I wish within a range of width/height. Kinda like the 'rollup' screens that Samsung (https://www.zdnet.com/article/samsung-display-unveils-display-that-rolls-up-like-a-scroll/) and other have shown, but in two directions. Or even many directions.

Apple’s design conundrum is making phones that “do everything for everyone.”

The company needs to recognize that there is a large market for smaller phones that are simply phones, and that slip into your pocket. The iPhone 5 was the pinnacle of this design form. I use a MB or one of two iPads for everything non-phone related, and have despised the larger form factor since the iPhone 6.

So I am confused here, the iPhone 5 definitely was NOT just simply a phone. And Apple IS trying the smaller size market, the SE now in third generation with rumors of a 4th on its way, eventually, and the market responded with a yawn. That is, relatively fewer were sold and hence Apple does not update them as often.

I’m not sure I understand the complaints for this product.

1. Quality. We know Apple will demand a crease free fold or it won’t be released, so no concern there.

2. Purpose. It doubles the space with a smaller footprint. And yes, it’ll be slightly thicker.
If nothing else, it’ll force Apple to reimagine iOS as something more than just a grid of icons.

3.We didn’t ask for it!
Guess what, no one asked for an iPad, or VisionPro either. It’s innovating and continually moving the needle forward.

Lastly, not every Apple product is aimed at you. If it don’t want it, don’t buy it.

However, the source of today's rumor claims that Samsung's latest folding panels "broke down after a few days" under Apple's rigorous internal testing, which has caused Apple to put the entire project on ice for the foreseeable future, or at least until a display that can meet its high standards can be developed.

This doesn't pass the sniff test for veracity. Sure, a specific screen fails, cancel that prototype. But the whole project? Dubious. Unless they have data that suggests no one even wants a fordable, they will keep trying. But I get that doesn't make a good headline.

7 day battery life for those week long benders? How is that a practical benefit? You can plug it in every night.
I know 7 days sounds impossible right now but thats because battery technology has not been improved drastically for over 2 decades now. Same Li-Ion batteries from 2000s are being used, we just have faster charging now.
