Touchscreens and “app stores” were widely available before the OG iPhone. They just weren’t very good.
Multitouch screens weren't a norm much less mainstream before the iPhone.

Digital distribution channels for software were rare and largely unpopular.

Apple's App Store was headlining and pioneering in success.

In other words other companies may have started it but Apple made them commercially viable.

Apple has suspended its development of a foldable iPhone after supplier displays failed to pass the company's own stringent testing standards, claims a new rumor coming out of China.

According to Fixed Focus Digital, a Weibo-based tech video blogger from Guangdong with a huge Chinese following, Apple has been testing rival foldable phones as part of its research and development process into foldable devices, which is believed to have been going on since 2016.

At least one of the foldables that Apple is said to have been testing uses a display made by Samsung. Samsung is a major supplier of display panels used in Apple devices, and is known to have provided foldable display samples to Apple in the past. A recent report also claimed that Samsung has been attempting to strengthen its operational efficiency in anticipation of Apple's first foldable products by integrating the expertise it has gained making foldable devices since 2019.

However, the source of today's rumor claims that Samsung's latest folding panels "broke down after a few days" under Apple's rigorous internal testing, which has caused Apple to put the entire project on ice for the foreseeable future, or at least until a display that can meet its high standards can be developed.

According to a report from The Information earlier this month, Apple has been actively building prototypes of at least two foldable iPhones following over five years of research and development. The two iPhone prototypes are said to fold widthwise like a clamshell, but do not feature in Apple's product roadmap for 2024 or 2025. The report noted that the foldable iPhones could still be canceled if they do not meet Apple's standards.

The Weibo account purporting to have received information about the foldable project's suspension at Apple is a largely unknown quantity, having no previous track record for Apple rumors to our knowledge, therefore skepticism about its accuracy is warranted.

It's also unclear whether the claim impacts Apple's continuing work on a foldable iPad. Apple is rumored to be more interested in such a device, which could be thicker than a foldable ‌iPhone‌ since users would not expect to carry it in their pocket and it would not need to pass the high durability requirements of an ‌iPhone‌.

Earlier this month, Korean outlet The Elec reported that Apple is considering launching its first foldable in the next few years in the form of a 7- to 8-inch device that could ultimately replace the 8.3-inch iPad mini.

This has all the ingredients for succes. Why isnt Apple having the courage? No need to release firmware upgrades to force upgrades.

Apple must make these new phones fold like Vision Pro sales. Maybe after market share becomes foldable they will finally accept that people don’t need this?

I mean, flip-phone nostalgia is not a reason to create this. Even back then “foldables” were seen as highly impractical devices (a piece of sand into the hinge and you can’t fold it anymore! True “killa feature”🤦‍♂️)

But moving parts can be replaced.

Just as an old rusted hinge on a barn door, you should be able to swap out a foldable screen for a new one. But unfortunately, that's not the Apple way.
Maybe you should check on how much a replacement screen is for the Samsung Fold.. Even though it's available, it's labor intensive and very expensive. Not something an average person with no technical skills would attempt..

Until they figure out how to make the 2 halves separate so the display doesn't actually bend...internally hinged or something then I don't think any foldable will be right. Just my .02

hmm... I'm pretty sure people would stand in line again if Apple released this tomorrow:

Probably, because that would mean the phones are able to match Apple's durability targets. I know several people who have foldable smartphones (they all like them), but there are issues with the crease and durability. The newest foldable phone screens are much more durable than the earliest models, but they still have more issues than non-foldable screens.

Sometimes things are dreams of science fiction until one day they are not.

The technology is not at a point where Apple deems it acceptable, I agree with that. But that day will come soon enough. Be it folding or rolling expandable, the demand and appetite for these products is here.

Apple is so desperate to create new product lines that they have stopped innovating on their current ones for a long time now.

We should have had 7 day battery phones by now or under display camera phones. These things have real world benefits. A folding phone is a gimmick and the poor sales from other brands is a proof of that.
7 day battery life for those week long benders? How is that a practical benefit? You can plug it in every night.

That sounds wrong. Is Samsung giving them their scraps from the display division?
It's unclear if Apple (who absolutely does NOT want to get stuck with thousands of returns for failed foldable screens!) is being super rigorous in their testing of Samsung product or if they built something to Apple's specs for these tests. I really doubt they are sending over scraps and rejects from the dumpster at the Daegu plant.

Nope they wouldn't as there would always be a crease (to start with) and it would provide very little for a lot of compromises.
When I use my phone I don't want to look on even a hint of the bend area.

Foldable phones are dead end as you simply can't do it in a way that it would be aesthetically pleasing. You can't even fold a paper without showing the crease (you can bend it but not fold it) and if you pick material that doesn't show immediate crease then you will make it tired and in the end it will show/break.

Physics are physics. Thicker devices are probably the only way to do it (just like with the paper).

hmm... I'm pretty sure people would stand in line again if Apple released this tomorrow:

Good, nobody wants a phone with a giant crease in the middle.

This is why I hope the rumored "foldable MacBook" looks a lot like the dual screen ASUS laptop that was released a few weeks ago. There's no sense in taking on extraordinarily difficult engineering problems when you can make something really great in a much simpler way.
