You really don’t get the concept of wanting a tablet without having to carry it around in a backpack?

I can understand the concept. I can also understand the concept of having a chip implanted directly in my skull.

That's not the issue here. The issue is where said technology is developed enough to a better (including more reliable and safe) alternative to what we already have.

I very much do NOT believe that, for the general public, inserting chips into people's heads is a fully developed and safe technology. I remains to be seen if an Apple foldable phone will be, in daily use, a better alternative to a tablet that is tablet sized and has to put in a backpack.

Personally, I've need a lot more reassurance and real-world evidence that the screen non a foldable phone is as good as or better than then the screens on a non-foldable Apple device, both in terms of performance and reliability. Until Apple can show that, it's not an argument that can be won or lost.

It's an abomination. Truly hideous. A sad day for design if this gets released.
Steve Jobs would probably have released a foldable even sooner than Tim Cook. It's so funny that so many people (not talking about the author of the comment above @tim-apple-silicon here, just in general) say Steve Jobs would be "rolling in his grave" at the idea of a foldable etc.

Throwing out a few more predictions:

1. Cameras: 1 telephoto lens for zooming and one “fusion” camera lens that serves as the primary camera and wide angle (like the air)

2. Mini version of Apple Pencil with special cases that include stylus compartment.

3. Runs a modified version of iOS that includes some of the multitasking features of iPadOS. Apps will automatically run the iPad version when the phone is unfolded.

He'd also not have consolidated the entire line to huge patio pavers "only" though.

"OPs guy" CEO has some serious drawbacks on user choices.

No-one can know what Jobs would or wouldn't be "rolling in his grave"" about. It's a silly line to use.

Foldables really are unwieldy and awful to use. I’ve never understood the appeal, especially when you add in the plastic screen (that feels horrible) and the atrocious crease. I’m still glad Apple is going to release one for those who want it and to stay competitive, and I trust that they’ll do at least as good a job of it as Samsung and Oppo.
The Galaxy Z Fold is both lighter and virtually the same thickness (.1 mm difference) as an iPhone 17 Pro Max. It’s only 9g heavier and the same width and thickness as a 17 Pro.

So what you’re saying is iPhones are also unwieldy and awful to use?

and why make a fold but not a mini? surly there are more people who would buy a mini than a fold.
Yeah…the iPhone minis were so popular. Nobody likes iPhones with large displays.

Most popular iPhone sold every year is the Pro Max version. First phone to have preorders pushed out this year—Pro Max. People want as much display as companies will give them.

No, I’m talking about the form factor when unfolded. As in using it in its transformed tablet form. I don’t find that comfortable at all which negates the entire point of foldable devices for ME.

you can't focus on more than 1 screen at once. human brain is single task only.

I hope it's more like an iPad mini hybrid. so I don't have to buy an iPad.

Yea no one is gonna buy a phone $2,000 or more. I wouldnt even buy a phone $1,000. I swear Apple will go out of business by 2030 if they keep this behavior up. This is why more ppl are going to driods or other style phones

Yeah, nobody will by a $2K phone.

And before anyone claims that’s because of the orange color—it’s the same scenario for all colors.

I wonder on the foldable iPhone, will they use a special version of iPadOS designed specifically for the larger foldable display?
iOS for the outside screen, iPadOS for the inside screens I figure. It'll be a differentiator. "The full power of iPadOS and iPadOS Apps now inside your pocket."

Horrendous idea, I don't think apple should ever do a vertical hinge. Would ruin iPad sales, which are already dying... Hopefully they also do the classic horizontal hinge at some point, thats all I want lol
Either buy two separate devices for less money or a combined device for more money, seems Apple doesn’t care either way.

Stop quoting Gurman, he brings nothing new. We’ve mentioned this many times over the past week on these forums.

It’s very obvious the Air is preceding the Fold with its design. The fold will be two airs and the new premium product. That’s why the air has the premium titanium material with the polished finish reserved for the premium iPhones.
The Pro is relegated as a sturdy bulky do all pocket computer for geeks.
Why? Because the fold will be the most expensive in the lineup.
It’s not going to replace the pro as the flagship model. It won’t be useful for most power users. Remember iPhone Pro models are premium cameras before anything else…

So you don’t like to use tablets is basically what you’re saying because it’s not unwieldy as a tablet either—it’s smaller than any iPad Apple currently makes.

If I wanted two small phones, I'd just buy two small phones. No thanks. Make it the size of a Pro Max AND fold out, then maybe.

No, I’m saying that the form factor is not what I want in a phone. I don’t have any desire to carry around a phone that transforms into a small tablet. No need to be so defensive because others don’t like foldables
