I never understood those who whine about why Apple didn't put out a similar design of brand name X-device. Just because it's cutting edge doesn't mean it's reliable. I would rather get a folding iPhone 2-3 years from now that has worked out all the kinks that the predecessors of folding phones suffered through. If you're going to pay that much money make sure the company has done it right. At that price point it better last longer than the regular cycle of smartphones. The iPad came well after tablets were already in the market, but it was a tablet designed the way tablets before it should have been.

Sounds like a gimmick when body heat already keeps the phone warm.
What?

Batteries already die in cold situations on iPhone. There was just a thread on that. Unless you are a kangaroo and keep your phone in your pouch, seems like your phone can get cold.

Lol, yes exactly.

On that note if Apple really did use heaters to maintain the battery temperature in cold weather that would literally be an insanely groundbreaking feature that probably lengthens the life of the battery 3-4x. I know the thread is about the heater for the screen, but while they are at it they may as well patent technology for it to be for the battery too. Lol it is actually a genius idea if only they can create heat at an efficient amount rate that the drain on battery is acceptable.

Lol seriously I should not be posting this idea on the internet and instead should be patenting it myself. Battery heaters, the next breakthrough technology -you wait and see.

Teslas use battery warmers for that purpose.

Am I the only person wondering why we need foldable iPhones?

The bigger question is, will it have a notch?

Is this really a big problem for people who upgrade every year, two or three years. AMOLED will probably have a hint of yellow or blue discolouration over this timeframe before the perceived bending is a problem. Good on Apple to finally be working on a merged iPhone/iPad product.

Phone are kept close to the body which heats its up, even while holding it. Cars are kept in a cold garage or outside in the cold.

I'm amazed that in a tech savvy forum such as this, how many people can't see the possibilities in this or any new tech. That doesn't mean it will be a lasting development, but Man, you guys trash tech because it's not developed by your company of choice. Who cares if it will or will not be a viable product. It's interesting and new. Obviously, they are not priced for most regular people. Neither are most Rolex watches, McLaren cars, and Evian water.

Your hand doesn’t keep it warm enough to keep the cold from affecting battery life. It won’t prevent plastic from getting brittle either.

When a phone is in use the battery and the CPU components get hot along with your palm. If we are talking about a bend and reverting to plastic screens, I am not sure it’s a good thing.

My palms are hot, not sure how much hotter one needs to keep a battery while in use. You may have a medical condition due to lack of blood flow to the extremities.

Like these glow sticks you have to break/fold to light it up.

Note 7's fiery battery was a hot mess

That shouldn’t affect battery life These are the types of things that are considered by the turtle when racing the hare.

ummm. What?

i'm trying to figure out if the really weird metaphor of the 2nd part of your statement is meant to imply sarcasm to your first part, or, seriousness

Heat is a product of energy dissipation. you don't get that without drawing from some form of energy source. This means that a heater inside a phone is going to require either battery draw, or combustion.

and we definitely don't want combustion.

Yes, the first statement was pure sarcasm. And should’ve been in a separate paragraph from the second. Poorly written by me. Sorry

Hey apple. I think there is way more demand for a compact iPhone than this folding nonsense.

Good to see Apple looking for solutions to issues with foldable screens prior to releasing. Samsung and Huawei should have done the same.

LoL and what's the proof that they didn't do the same?

Something I never thought about, but it is total common sense. Nearly all materials become more brittle in the cold. Being from Minnesota this could be a huge issue. Leave it to Apple to think of something like this. I highly doubt Samsung or Huawei have addressed this.

Sure makes all the people who were insisting Apple is behind the times and falling behind after the Samsung and Huawei releases sound dumb. If you thought Apple wasn't already developing and testing folding screens this patent filing sure proves that wrong.
Yeah because your doubts count as proof.o_O

This will be the hip and trendy thing to have when it comes out, but other than that, an absolute gimmick of a device that I won't be partaking in, even if Apple get on board and make one. Waste of R&D money, don't make a 'Me Too' product Apple. I'd rather see a phone with better battery life, a full screen (no notch) and a camera that is flush with the rest of the phone.

What I'm wondering is, won't the screen easily get scratched and damaged? I assume in order to be able to fold it has to be made of a somewhat soft material, say softer than gorilla glass.
How have they solved that problem?

Won't even bother until they have foldable phone with the same scratch resistant as current smartphones with tempered glass.

They are releasing products with creases right down the middle of the screen. I’m sure they did their testing over the 6 years of development, but I guess they decided that a creased screen was good enough for their customers. Hey, if they can fix those issues in a month after not being able to fix them for years, I’ll applaud them, but I’d say it’s unlikely since they have been working on this stuff since 2013.

Because people are realizing a large-screened phone is only a joy to own when you're actively doing something on it. Otherwise it's just a device you constantly have to worry about, as the large size and being a stiff wafer of glass hinders you from carrying it the same way you can smaller, softer items.

Meanwhile if you had a foldable device you can easily carry it and use it one-handed, and then open it for a larger workspace. With one of these foldables, I could replace my cell phone and the tablet I take with me to work into one device.

OK so no real proof just you overly exaggerating with that creases in the middle of the screen thing.
You did exactly what I was expecting :D
So taking this into consideration Samsung and Huawei should have done the same is quite a strange advice.
