CNET seems to think the Trifold's crease is less noticable than the 7, so hopefully the 8 will utilize this technology this year. The bad news is Samsung is selling the Trifold at a loss and even at full MSRP couldn't keep the phone on their shelves. So the chances of us getting insane deals on one at launch doesn't seem to be very good.

Interesting. If I'm watching a full screen video it's definitely going in landscape orientation... having those black bars on top and bottom would annoy me. If I do decide to watch a video in portrait... I'll Splitscreen another app at the bottom in an effort of removing the black bars.

I'm mostly in portrait orientation as well... but when it comes down to viewing content, landscape provides a more immersive experience. But this coming from a Fold 6 user.... so maybe it's different for me.
I guess I never really made an effort to rotate it but tried it out and I guess it makese black bars a little smaller, but not really enough to make a big difference, unless I'm missing something.

Finally we have first hand video of One UI 8.5 on a foldable... reviewer hates that Quick Settings and Notification Center was not combined therefore it must be a terrible . I don't really mind the change... because I like the fact it's floating and not taking up the entire screen.

But one thing that has me super excited is the change to the taskbar at the 5:05 mark... it's now translucent, they demonstrated how when scrolling it's not as stagnated as it was before.

Kudos to you... it bothers me, rather have less black bars than more.

This will probably sound weird, but I rarely actually put a YouTube video in full screen. I like having the screen real estate to be able to watch a YouTube video at a larger scale while still browsing the comments and having access to notifications at the same time.

I know I'm probably an outlier in how I use it though.

Not sure why the focus is on YT, I'm discussing watching full screen videos in general whether that be from Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Prime Video, etc....

And my point is centered around getting a better tablet experience in landscape orientation compared to portrait (particularly when it comes to using SplitScreen).

it's fairly similar to be honest

tri fold crease like with any is more noticeable in direct sunlight.

fold 8 will have basically no crease in july so will only get better for sure.

Fold 8 leaks and rumor mill citing return of S Pen is definitely intriguing, but I don't think it's enough to sway me from the TriFold. Everyday I check to see if there's any new announcement of when US release will be. Sadly, still no clear date.

CNET just named the Samsung TriFold for "overall" Best of CES award, and CES Best Mobile Tech award. When oh when can we get our hands on it Stateside?!?!

I’m not believing the S-Pen rumors until I see concrete evidence that there is support… because they were the same stories claiming the Fold 7 will have S-Pen support only to be missing when Samsung officially announced it.

I don’t mind using the Fold 6 another year, but the plan is to get the Fold 8 Wide regardless if there is no S-Pen support… but I surely hope that there will be. And as much as I like the TriFold… seen plenty of videos come across my YT timeline about it, doesn’t make much sense for me when I carry a 13” iPad as well.

Not surprising at all… it’s a marvel piece of tech.

Honestly, I am tired of using a regular, conventional smartphone. It just feels boring and limiting at this point.

I really miss having a foldable, especially one in the style of the Oppo Find N2 and the upcoming iPhone Fold. That compact yet wide form factor is exactly what I am looking for.

I have heard that Oppo is planning to release both the N6 and the N7 (wide) this year. Hopefully they will choose an aspect ratio that uses as much screen area as possible when watching videos, instead of wasting space on black bars.

Samsung is also working on a wide foldable, but I really dislike Samsung’s boxy rectangular design. On top of that, the placement of the inner screen camera is something I find very distracting.

The Apple Fold will most likely be far too expensive, which makes it unrealistic for me. Because of that, it will probably end up being an Android foldable.

I just hope one of these devices comes out soon.

Great point of view and see your points @Achillias! Sadly I am 180 from your viewpoint, and still so meh on this segment of the industry.

More interested in a smaller phone (think iPhone 4) that has the ability to do Dex or Android desktop mode (wireless or wired) when I need more space.

The irony is, because of flexibility in sizing apps due to Foldable devices, Desktop mode applications are far better for both tablets, foldables and when using one of the flavors of Dex / desktop modes in android. While there are a host of iPad applications that could be tapped into for an eventual Apple foldable, the scaling efforts done on the Android side have put that mobile OS years ahead IMO.

Why are we thinking an Apple foldable will be significantly more expensive than what Samsuand others offer? A 256gb S25 Ultra is $100 more than a 256gb 17 Pro Max.

Simple, Apple wants to maximize profit. But it depends on what the market is willing to bear for a first-gen iPhold.

The flipside of your question is, how much can Samsung undercut Apple (if it wanted to), considering Samsung has been designing and manufacturing foldables for much longer, and is more vertically integrated than Apple?

I can see an Apple foldable being slightly more expensive but they have to be in the ballpark, especially with their first version.
I can't wait to see it even though I'm not an Apple customer.

Where is this significant more expensive than Samsung narrative coming from? I haven't found any rumors indicating that... perhaps it will be $100 more, but I don't think that implies it's significant.

But most of the rumors have stated that the initial cost will be around $1799-$2000 ballpark, which is about the same amount as the Fold 7. One thing to consider though... if Apple indeed introduces an UDC camera for the foldable, that could raise the price.

I agree to Apple motives on maximize profits... but the Fold 7 is already expensive as is. One thing Samsung does to counter the cost is to give their users crazy discounts... Apple does not follow that method.

TriFold pricing come September timeframe will also create a buffer to how high Apple may want to price the foldable iPhone. Hopefully, Apple learns from AVP that there is a limit for the Apple faithful.

Comments in this thread, nothing else. I've gotten the impression that people think it will be more expensive but maybe I'm misunderstanding because all foldables are expensive.

I may be wrong... but AVP has hardly anything to do with a foldable iPhone. This is a 2-1 device... iPhone that unfolds into an iPad, two established devices... both popular in their category.

I think AVP is a cool piece of technology, but it's something that most folks wouldn't use on a every day basis (and if so, not for a lengthy period)... so the value proposition is not there. But when it comes to a foldable iPhone... people will use it daily, price can be upwards of $2500 and I don't think Apple faithful will flinch at the price.

Because if we are looking at 2k for the starting price... this will likely be the 256gb model, which leads me to believe $2500 will be for the TB model. And I can see alot of folks buying the TB model.

Yeah, I think Samsung does a good job with masking the price with trade-ins (or discounts)... which makes the price reasonable to the public.

Because when Galaxy Fold launches we quickly compare trade-ins and discounts... because paying full retail would be crazy. These past couple of weeks... I'm getting notifications on the Samsung Shop app detailing how much discounts I can get off the Fold 7, which I doubt Apple will do for their foldable (certainly not in their store).

Come on, there is no way anybody is unfolding that thing outdoors.
