I'm also curious to see how that crease is going to look but I've decided that I'm definitely going to skip this first version, tbh face ID is one thing that I want to keep on my iOS side phone
Do you have an iPad in your setup? So, I’m guessing you’re going for the Fold 8 (wide) after all? But I think once this iPhone Fold gets officially announced and the hype train develops… never know what could happen then lol.

Because the make or break thing isn’t what the iPhone Fold is missing… it’s the software side of things, it’s what Apple plans to add to it to make it stand out above the rest.

I got rid of my iPad awhile back now just didn't use it enough to keep it, thinking Fold 8 wide right now but let's see what shakes. I'm interested to see what software is on the iPhone Fold oh yes

Interesting how dynamics change… I want no parts of having an iPhone, but can’t part ways with an iPad.

I’m already marking the date of when I’ll get the Fold 8 (wide) lol… announcing on July 22nd and based on past history, it should arrive in my hands on the 31st.

Yeah iPhone has my work stuff and easy to carry around plus my main phone line. Haha, that's a realistic in-hand date for the Samsung release.

Got no issues carrying around my iPad in a small backpack, screen is bigger than the iPhone… helps to show clients (or potential clients) on a larger display.

And yeah, supposedly Samsung release the phone 2 weeks after announcement… but they typically give us the phone early. How has your Fold 7 held up? Seen news it’s getting those two new Galaxy AI features.

I'm not really interested in going back to an iPhone but the software on their foldable could persuade me down the road if it's better on a foldable than what the android phones are offering. Although I suspect the Z Fold 9 is going to be killer.

Not sure if Samsung One UI will be better than iOS in terms of foldable support… since Samsung has been at it for years. However, I am confident that Apple will introduce new ideas.

Umm, Z Fold 9 Ultra could be killer… because Samsung has the ability to really differentiate itself from the regular Z Fold 9. They already have a bigger battery, telephoto lens and larger displays… so going forward it’s going to be even better and I could see myself going the Ultra route next go around.

Totally get you with the iPad nice and convenient too, Fold 7 is running perfectly and really could see myself with it long term too bc it ticks all the boxes for me..

I can't wait to see how Samsung responds to the new challengers. Should be great for us.

I would not see any issues with unlock like a current iPhone if they ever bring it to a foldable
Try it on your fold with an extra imaginary screen swipe up and you may see depending how you grab and open your fold how the extra swipe required with face ID alters your grip before opening to the inner screen 🙂

Personally it seems an awkward step that could be resolved if opening = swipe up 🙂

Something I have been meaning to ask as I not a big social media user-

Although I have many accounts for years and I do view YouTube for reviews and how to fix things for example. I do use one Facebook group that is about my new car however as of late I have got in to a bad habit of scrolling through reels mainly because old classic UK Tv clips and the like are shown

What I have noticed is not all content uploaded is in slab phone aspect ratio, in fact the aspect ratios vary greatly and I do not believe it's Samsung doing clever screen stretching.

We often see comments about Folds only give a small (<25%) advantage, but is this out of ignorance ? as in my limited viewing experience the difference can be very noticeable and no black side bars 🙂

Yes I think it depends the app and also sometimes the way stuff is uploaded as to how the foldable handles that aspect ratio, sometimes I get some stuff that I wish would look bigger on the foldables inside screen and then sometimes I look at stuff like the one you're looking at and I'm like wow that's the way it's meant to be

Have you changed the DPI on the Galaxy Fold? Seems unusually large to me.

I will probably trade-in my Fold 7 with corporate benefits discount. I have my Oppo Find X9 Ultra for taking videos and photos and it would be neat to take a more compact foldable along. I still have my Oppo Find N5 for the "regular" form factor. Writing this makes me realize I probably need help as I also have an iPhone 16 from work 😅🫣

Weird. My Instagram does not look like that at all by default

Yes lots of content is in that aspect/format but equally lots are much better suited to folds like in my example 🙂

I just quickly flicked through and for example Bewitched clips were in both vertical letter box and full fold width and many commercials and mini info/documentary style clips are not letter boxed

There is a chap that rebuilt a crashed/damaged Bugatti (Mat Armstrong) and his video's are generally not clipped

I think there is a lot of stuff posted from phones held in the vertical mainly for phone apps, but there is also a lot of better formatted clips out there for laptops and tablets that the Fold screens start to shine over conventional slab phones 🙂

We're getting close now to the release of the new Folds. I'm particularly interested in this new generation, mainly the Wide and Z Flip (if it's true it will also have a wider screen), but I'm still hesitant about the fragility of the plastic screens, where you can leave scuffs in the screen just with your fingernails by mistake.

Of course, one can be careful, but I don't really want to worry about that every time I use the phone. I love the Flip line; wish Samsung focus more on that model, giving it even better cameras, battery and features. It's such a nice device with great color options.

I really want to try the new Z Fold Wide at the store. Hope Samsung has some nice offers at launch, but also worried about the high price due to the RAM situation. Foldables where expensive enough before, and now it might get worse.

I saw an unopened Z Filp 7 yesterday at a second hand store for 1.097€. Not bad. Might go that route eventually if store prices go up drastically.

Actually Samsung alternate between the two lines... if the Fold gets a big upgrade this year more than likely Flip gets one next year.

And originally Flip was the more popular choice among consumers... it was only until recently that the Fold outsold the Flip.

It's going to be more expensive... that's inevitable at this point. Luckily, with Samsung being in the RAM industry... could prevent the cost being that insane. And baring any curve ball with S-Pen support for the standard Fold... my plan is pick up the Z Fold Wide.

We are entering 8 generation into the game... durability on screens is pretty good. Been with the Fold since the 2nd generation... had only one major issue throughout the years, where it had a dead pixel near the crease... Samsung took care of since I was within warranty.

And this happened years ago... haven't had any issues since and I'm sure the technology has improved so far. But it goes without saying... getting some insurance will help alleviate worriedness.

The ultra is the only way to go if you really need/want the best cameras. I personally feel the cameras on my Flip7 exceed my needs, but flagship prices on these foldables should come with flagship hardware. As for screen durability, it's been a non-issue for me since my Flip5. Although, I will say, if you live in cold climates, you're best not opening and closing your phone while it's really cold. When you start hitting the -15'c and below, my gut feeling says it won't be good for the UTG. I remember one time it was around -36°C (-32.8°F) and I was on a walk and had my phone in my pant pocket. My phone rings and I go to answer it, and it felt kind of stiff and made a slight crackling sound when I opened it. No damage to the screen, but didn't like that sound or that feel when opening it. Needless to say, always made sure I had my earbuds with me when going on walks in cold weather. As it gets near launch time, I lean more and more into the Fold8, wide version. Still can't say for sure I'll get it, as I've said many times, the compact size of the Flip is just so convenient.

I wonder due to the crazy memory prices if us early adopters will still get the free customary upgrade to 512GB this year ?

That's always been customary for Samsung... but both variants (256GB & 512GB) will be 12GB RAM. I doubt if the 512GB model had 16GB RAM... they would offer it for free.

But this year I'll probably look to go for the 1TB model if it has 16GB RAM... especially if the Fold Wide launch price starts around $1800, that would leave the 1TB around $2200. And get it for under 1k with trade-in along with pre-order discounts.

I think the Fold 8 (wide) will sway a lot of users who are fold curious. I think Samsung made the right call with the squared corners. The first fold had a slight curve on the corners, making it look asymmetrical. I know the Apple faithful live and die for symmetry, so not sure how they'll deal with this. I myself have to say, the asymmetry is too blunt for my liking. Nonetheless, rumor now has it, the Flip series will be dead after the Flip 8. So we might be looking at the Wide version being the default fold.
