The third season of popular Apple TV+ series "For All Mankind" is set to premiere on Friday, June 10, Apple announced today. "For All Mankind" was one of the first Apple TV+ shows made available when the service launched in November 2020, and the space drama has continued to be a hit with viewers.

Created by Ronald D. Moore, "For All Mankind" imagines what the world might be like if the global space race never ended and the space program had remained a priority in the United States. The initial series saw a Russian cosmonaut making it to the moon first, devastating morale at NASA and pushing the U.S. to catch up.

The second season, which came out in February 2021, saw a decade time jump, picking up in 1983 at the height of the cold war with the United States and USSR fighting over resources available on the moon.

Season three introduces a second time jump, moving on to the early 1990s where the US and the Soviet Union are racing to get to Mars.
The propulsive new season of the alternate-reality series takes viewers to a new decade, moving into the early '90s with a high-octane race to a new planetary frontier: Mars. The Red Planet becomes the new front in the space race not only for the US and the Soviet Union, but also an unexpected new entrant with a lot to prove and even more at stake. Our characters find themselves going head-to-head as their ambitions for Mars come into conflict and their loyalties are tested, creating a pressure cooker that builds to a climactic conclusion.
Joel Kinnaman, Shantel VanSanten, Jodi Balfour, Sonya Walger, Krys Marshall, Cynthy Wu, Casey Johnson, Coral Peña and Wrenn Schmidt are all returning for season three.

The first episode of season three will debut on Friday, June 10, and then one new episode will follow on each subsequent Friday.

Yah! I recognize Ronald D. Moore from doing the reimaged Battlestar Galactica (2004). My Apple TV+ trial ends in a couple of months, so dunno if I'll have enough time to finish out this show's 3rd season. If not, I'd rather not start a season I won't finish. No biggie. As many have suggested with Apple TV+, if you feel like you're at a good stopping point, cancel the sub, and check back later in (6 months, 1 year+) when new content gets added to the roster.

This show is really nailing it, both in the way they are blending history into it and the hypothetical path they are taking for how history may have unfolded. There's a ton of easter eggs throughout, touching on how the one little change (the Russians get to the Moon first) snowballs into a change in society at large. It's all well thought out and detailed...even if you don't think that things might have gone that way it's hard to argue against the choices they have made. And, it's well made, well acted, and willing to take risks...the way they ended season 2 was really a knockout.

I'm interested to see how they handle the later seasons, the way they are growing the characters through the show means that there will be turnover. Several of the characters should move aside after this season, except perhaps as a minor bit here or there, simply because they are naturally aging out of the roles they hold. The show really handled the changes between seasons 1 and 2 well, but that was with the same characters, this season is going to have to bring in new people who will roll into the next seasons. And I hope they will continue, there's no reason this show couldn't keep going for several years, jumping forward to follow solar system exploration and possibly the first mission to another star.

Is there any science in this sci-fi, or is it just a nice CGI background for other stories? Just curious; I haven't seen it yet.

Considering it is based on the Space Race continuing past the early 1970s and touches upon actual programs like Sea Dragon and later blocks of the Saturn V I am of the opinion there is plenty of actual science along with the fiction.

Some points:

The Alternate history provides the backdrop - it's not a big 'what-if' piece of alternate history fiction like 'man in the high castle'. Also the alternate history is nuanced, there are some changes but not massive ones.

It seems to stay true to scientific principles and tries to be realistic.

In terms of the 'plot driven sci-fi' to 'character driven drama' ratio, I'd say it's about 40/60. It's certainly more character stuff than sci-fi. But it works well - the characters are interesting and very human.

Quality over quantity ..Thank you Apple
Indeed! Although TBF, there's such relatively less content on here that their signal-to-noise ration is much easier to maintain. That said, when I'm done with ATV+ (for then), I'll happily go back to Hulu, or try out Netflix since there's a lot of good stuff on there too!
