I think for good reason. When the 6 / 6+ came out it was the first time I wasn't able to pre-order. I had to camp out and that sucked. It can get cold in West Michigan this time of year and now it's going to be another 6 weeks. There could be snow. If you live in an area where weather isn't a concern then camping out could be fun.

Anyway, the 6 / 6+ were highly anticipated phones. All rumors are pointing to constrained supplies and long delays with the X so I don't think there is anything wrong with thinking about a Plan B. No one really plans for fail. They fail to plan.
How likely is snow on November 3rd in southern Michigan? Not very I’d say.. It’s currently 93 degrees and humid in Ann Arbor.

Anyway, I say order online and just wait it out. Who cares if it’s 8 weeks? Presumably you have a perfectly good phone to use in the meantime.

Camping doesn't work anymore. You could not camp for the iPhone 7 Glossy Black.

I would expect iPhone X to the same way with all orders going through the online system.

Like I did for my 7 Plus Jet Black, I would try to place my pre-order within the first minute or two after pre-orders opening, irrespective of the delivery estimate. Then while I wait for the delivery, I would keep a close look-out for store stock to become available and then order one for pick-up the moment one becomes available. That's how I got my 7 Plus last year. If the latter works out, I would cancel the pre-order. If it doesn't work out, while I keep waiting for the delivery, I am sure the rumours would start coming in for the 2018 model. I can then decide whether to wait out for the delayed 2017 phone delivery or just wait it out for the next one. The only problem with this is is that I have committed to sell my 7 Plus for €680 for a recycling site and so I won't be too happy ti keep going with my 5s for a long time. So, I might cave in and get an 8 Plus if I decide to wait it out for the next iteration.

Does ordering online for store pickup have a different stock allocation than ordering for delivery? I kind of figured they’d deliver to the store for pickups so it would be the same

If so then is delivery less likely to run out vs collection? I’d do both and then cancel the delivery if I get a collection too

Can you preorder online and select in-store pickup as an option, then set up IUP in store when you go pick it up?

Possibly, but they charge you when it ships. So if you bought in full for in store pickup, just know you get charged the full amount when it ships.

I'm debating using one of my Verizon lines to get the X or just wait for the sim free to come because in the end that's what I want may just get the Verizon one sell it and get the sim free

It is not pre-ordering for store pick-up that I meant. But from November 3rd onwards, the stores will get very small shipments of iPhone X. And the moment it becomes available, you reserve it online and go pick it up from the store at the slot you booked for. These stocks just vanish in minutes and so you need to keep very close watch. This was how I got my 7 Plus and AirPods

That is the only thing that has me nervous. I would really like to get on the IUP this time around, but I'm nervous that taking the time to get approved for the IUP is going to push me a lot farther back in the queue than I care to be. I can afford to buy it outright but would much rather have the 0% with the ease of swapping in a year if possible. Decisions, decisions....
Don’t be nervous. When I tried to order 8 with Apple up grade before you submit it already gives you a delivery date. Your “phone” is already locked in for a delievery date.
[doublepost=1506218191][/doublepost]Also if anyone really thinks phones will be postponed to march. You are crazy. This isn’t some ground breaking new thing. It’s an elite iPhone. That’s 1000 bucks. Not everyone is going to buy it.

You must have just moved to Ann Arbor. Welcome to Michigan! The weather can turn on a dime here. I grew up 30 minutes from AA and while you don't get as much snow there as you do in Grand Rapids, it's tricky weather. It might be 90 Monday and Tuesday but by Saturday the lows are reaching the 30s. Shorts today and Northface jackets and gloves by the weekend.

If you check out the 30 day forecast you'll see lows in the 30 for a good portion of October and 20s by this time next month. Snow may melt in the afternoon but if you're camping out at Briarwood overnight it's not going to be fun there if it's snowing. It's actually worse if it's that cold and raining. Cold is one thing. Cold and wet is completely different.
