This rules out me buying GM, but their shoddy reputation for reliability has kinda already done that.
I said I would never buy a Ford again, but I'm starting to change my mind
Ford is actually pretty decent nowadays. I'm coming from Subaru and currently planning to buy an Explorer this year because we need a bigger car than our Outback to fit more people. The Explorer has a lot of nice features that the Ascent doesn't have, and has a lot more power.
yet, Tesla continues to beat Ford at EVs.

100% of Tesla customers are Android and iPhone users and Tesla is saying "good luck"
Tesla was basically the first EV company so of course they have an edge. Ford didn't even have an EV until a couple years ago. But Ford will eat their lunch. The F-150 Lightning beats the pants off of the Cybertruck, which doesn't even exist. Elon Musk is full of broken promises and hate speech. I'm over Tesla. They aren't worth it.

Good luck to GM and other manufactures that follow suit.

CarPlay is one of the most requested features nowadays. If Apple produces a car with an elevated software exp, it'll just have people begging for a cheaper alternative with CarPlay integration.

They have already admitted its about revenue. GM wants to sell you On Star and other subscription services instead of letting the phone you already own provide them.

Plain and simple.
You are correct!

On Star is a joke. It provides good service when you need a tow or in an emergency but that's about it. It's very limited.

GM is making a gamble people don't buy a car based off the infotainment system. they're about to find out they're wrong. people want simplicity and ease. having to sync your iPhone via bluetooth and/or download some 3rd party app to talk to iOS's music app, navigation apps...it's not going to end well. CarPlay will be back in GM cars within 3 years.

I honestly haven't had a positive experience with CarPlay (especially wireless car play). iOS has been so buggy the past few years, I can't tell which problems are from Apple and which problems are from my vehicle. But its turned me off of using it for its current capabilities, let alone letting it take control of the entire dashboard.
We identified the last GM buyer :)

I wasn’t aware GM was phasing out CarPlay. That’s disappointing.

This push to go all electric is one of the greatest scams. It’s not any better for the environment and we are decades away from having a grid that can support all electric cars. Have a look at California’s well managed state for a glimpse in to the future. 🤦‍♂️

Imagine driving a GM Corvette C8 and it does not have a CarPlay 😐

The funny thing is the dashboard screen is advertising Apple CarPlay.

I owned a Volt and was really happy with it. I plan to buy a new EV in the relatively near future, and was looking at both Ford and Chevy options. But, I'd sworn that I'd never buy a car without CarPlay again, so now I'm not even considering what Chevy has on offer.

Ironically, the thing that drove me to this conclusion was specifically my experience with Chevrolet's infotainment system.

I liked everything else about the car, but hated the completely non-upgradable infotainment system, and decided that there was no reason I should be locked into some garbage music UI and years-old, crappy map app that will never see a software update and I'm going to have to pay exorbitantly just to get up-to-date maps on. All I really want on that screen is my phone, so if you're not giving me that option, I'm not buying your car when there are comparable competitors out there.

Deal breaker for so many - why would you do this, GM?
If the speculation in this reporting on this decision is accurate, it's the worst imaginable reason: Chevrolet wants to sell services to go with cars, and they plan to use the car software to data-mine drivers to make that more valuable. Makes sense that they'd want to use a Google product for that, given Google's penchant for scraping every possible bit of information about user habits then monetizing that data.

If you use CarPlay for your maps, voice assistant, and wayfinding needs, they can't very well profile your preferred destinations, driving habits, and search terms.

I know I am on the crazier side for this, but the main reason I don’t want and still don’t want certain cars, is because they don’t have CarPlay. It is a deal breaker for me. My car right now is new enough to last me a good while, so I can promise the next car I get will have the next generation of CarPlay and that is going to be the deal breaker for me. Haha.

With many cars, you can just buy your own CarPlay deck, but some have such a proprietary stupid display that it's not replaceable by anything else, which is frustrating.

Although that car looks awesome, I've never been a fan of cars that only seat two people.

I have only had excellent experiences with it. Every time I have my Acura serviced the loaner has it. I will not even consider a car without it now. I was thinking Yukon at one point. GM removed that option.
A lot of time it will get into loops where it won't connect, and without a power button on the entertainment system, sometimes the only way to force a connection is to turn the car off and open the door. Sometimes the map freezes up for a bit. Sometimes car play just randomly disconnects while driving down the road. Sometimes it says it won't connect, but audio stops playing from my phone/BT headset but also doesn't come out of the car, so if its not connecting why do I lose control of my audio. I also have had a really weird behavior where if carplay is connected, sometimes my FM radio will just suddenly start turning on every once in a while. It will do it multiple times in a drive, but stops at vehicle shutdown. I know that last one has got to be a vehicle related issue, but I can't help but think its getting some audio disconnect signal from the phone making it think it should switch sources.

None of these issues I can say are 100% the car, I'm so jaded with the past few releases of iOS that I am very tempted to say its a combination of both.

I have found that if I plug the phone in while wireless car play is broken, wired carplay works just fine, and sometimes when I unplug my phone the wireless starts working without missing a beat. I don't like how iPhones integrate with cars when plugged in, they always would start playing music i didn't want them to play, so I generally don't want to plug them in.

I use CarPlay daily for doing delivery work and have almost resorted back to a phone holder and just using the phone.

California regulation wont allow for sales of new gas-only cars, but both types of hybrids are allowed.

Automakers have no one to blame but themselves. Instead of embracing hybrids back when the Prius became popular, they just sat there whining about how improved MPG was simply unattainable.

Definitely a stupid decision on GM's part, but is Carplay availability really a dealbreaker for your average new car buyer?
For me when I was looking for my next car, I had 4 options as a KO criteria:
- be CarPlay ready!!!
- has automatic transmission
- has LED beam
- has front seat heating

So yes, for many people I guess it can be a deal breaker.

Farley doesn't think there's money to be made in the content that car owners consume in their vehicles, with Ford instead focusing on safety, security, autonomy, and productivity features.
I suspect Farley is wrong on this, at least if "content" comes to include things like data-mining people's driving habits, selling map search results based on that data, or more extreme things like trying to sell your drivers insurance from their infotainment screen.

But I suspect he's right, if you expand that statement to mean: "If we try to wring money out of our customers by marketing to them in the car instead of just selling them a car that does what they want it to, then we will sell less cars and not make more money overall. Because some people don't want to become a product and advertising target in their own damn vehicle."

It's not a question of whether you can squeeze extra revenue out of customers by trying to turn them into a product and/or collect all the data you can from their habits. You can. It's a question of what percentage of your customers are okay with that situation. I for one am not, which is part of the reason I'd never even consider buying a Chevy now that it seems clear that's what they want to be as a car company. I'm not a Ford fan by any stretch and haven't owned one in 20 years, but if they stick to this and continue only selling me what I actually want to buy, I'm far more likely to become a customer.
