I liked them. And I am a power user. I don't think it's necessary to read into them so heavily. I mean, it's not like these ads change the way our Apple products work in any way.

the one on the plane was terrible.

the "basically" add is also silly but the genius is so friggin hot its easy to just ignore the dialogue and replay again and again just to see him again.

These ads send the message to consumers that Apple's ads are so complicated you'll need a genius to help you figure them out. What a moronic approach. Thus begins the steady decline.

You're making us all look bad, Apple.

Probably not. Maybe it is for people whose personal identity is way too much tied up with ???ads from a company whose products they use???

Escapes me how funny/offbeat/whatever ads cause so much furor, when most 'regular' people are just moving through their day, some laughing or ignoring. Of course, in film school they told us everybody has two jobs: what they do for money and being a critic of movies/tv/commercials.

I'm very interested to see what Cook does next.

If he waits to see if the ads bring in new customers, then we're on the right track.

If he caves in to the self-indulgent whining of people who know bugger-all about marketing (because they seem to believe that all Apple's marketing effort should be focused on them, even though they already bought the machine), then we really have a problem.

Gee, what a surprise

I'm glad to see Apple publicizing the differences with the other guys. Believe me, the Apple geniuses are a major selling point for Apple, as are the stores. Other people don't have these stores. Is anybody surprised that the ads since Steve aren't as terrific as they generally were before? No. But really, people, this is not brain surgery. It was smile-worthy. I think some people are angry at this ad because it KILLED DADDY. Or it shows how normal other people are next to him, or something -- and others are looking for the slightest thing to criticize.

----------

and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to have their brain checked.

these commercials were insulting and most of all not funny :(:apple:

What's insulting about them? People sometimes need help with their Macs, even though they're easier than Windows. But, oh yeah: if you're close to the Apple Store, you can find help from Geniuses, many of whom look like this guy, right here.

So very true

While I may be in the minority, I enjoyed the ads. I thought they were cute, lighthearted and whimsical. While they may well be of a different tenor than Apple has used in the past, a company like Apple needs to appeal to many different audiences, and I think these ads appeal to the common "non-techie."

I agree. They were definitely different but still okay. I thought Apple was trying to promote their applecare, one-to-one, and customer service overall along with emphasizing the easy to use but very handy programs that come with macs standard. It seemed more like a commercial aimed at, like you said, non-techs and those who don't currently have a mac/never have and thus don't know about all the extra stuff that helps justify the "premium" price.

Most people who don't have macs think that the high price is just apple over charging for hardware but really it includes a bundle of awesome programs and great customer service.

They weren't insulting commercials because they were just trying to let people know that they can get help with basically any little question they have thanks to the great customer support apple provides.

I've seen them during the Olympics and all I could think of was:

"Dude, you're getting a Dell."

Hey in fact... Apple is using a fairly young, nearly hipster-ish looking tech guy... APPLE IS COPYING DELL!!! SOME CALL THE LAWERS AND SUE THEM FOR ALL THEIR WORTH!!!

I guess you were in a coma when the entire "I'm a Mac" campaign was airing.

SJ would have rejected these ads. They are not only bad and frenetic but they give the wrong messages.

They give the message that a mac user would need external help to achieve something simple with a mac. Why on earth do they choose to give that message to people ?? They show people that are completely freaked out and nervous after using or trying to use their mac. WTF ?? They should show people feeling good and relaxed about using their mac and what they can achieve with it.

On the "basically" ad, they give the message that it is easy for a buyer to mistake a mac for a pc. They should emphasize the contrary : it's easy to recognize a mac, it's impossible to confuse them.
Also this ad is showing the disappointment of a person that has been misled. IT is not a very beautiful thing to show... All this to remind people that the mac has iPhoto, iMovie and Garage Band preinstalled ?

This is extremely difficult to understand. These ads are ads for the geniuses and not for apple. They put the mac down for the sake of promoting the role of the genius : the genuis help you make the right choice, the genius shows you how to do what you want to do... But did they have to trash the mac image to accomplish this ? OMG ! Who is the marketing executive at apple. Someone please fire him.

Also people speak too fast and say too many things. This is totally damaging the apple image.

They are aimed at switchers. When I got my first mac, I couldn't figure out how to install programs because I was looking for a way to run an installer script. I never would have thought that you could simply drag the icon to the application folder. That was way too simple of a solution, Windows had taught me that computers don't work that way. That's how a lot of potential switchers feel about the tasks done in these ads. Windows has trained them to expect tasks that are complex, but they really aren't on a mac. These ads serve two purposes, to demonstrate the simplicity of a mac and the availability of excellent support services.

They didn't trash the mac image at all. You're really just reading too much into it and taking it too seriously. The ads clearly aren't meant to represent the typical mac user or Genius, the outrageous premise behind each of the ads makes that obvious.

Well one thing is for sure, Steve Jobs did, while he was alive, inspect advertisements under a microscope to make sure they were exactly what he wanted. He had a good eye for marketing products.

Apple gets more Mac users from their gateway devices like iPhone and iPad than they do from any advertising campaign. When those devices start to slip, then get worried. Otherwise it's one bad campaign. Meh.

Why do people attribute Apples advertising to Jobs? He didn't create the campaigns, he was merely the one to sign them off. If they listened to him, the "Think Different" campaign would not exist.

The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling! Doom! Gloom! Woe is me! Apple is dying!

Geez, folks, grow a sense of humor. For those with Apple Juice instead of blood in their veins, maybe these are terrible. But for a lot of common people, these are fun commercials that make a point. Most of my non-techie friends absolutely love them and are waiting for more.

Really?

Dell hasn't had their "dude" in a LONG time .... (Last I heard, the guy was busted on marijuana possession charges and pretty much disappeared.)

I thought these ads were perfectly fine. Maybe not a "high point of Apple excellence" or anything, but they serve their purpose as marketing tools.

You gotta be real arrogant to call a technician a "genius".

"A genius is someone embodying exceptional intellectual ability, creativity, or originality, typically to a degree that is associated with the achievement of unprecedented insight."

How many Apple "geniuses" have IQ's over 140

the strangest thing i find about these ads is that they're simply targeting visitors to the apple stores and no idevices are featured. it's unapple-like to spend a billion in advertising on a dying computer sector of your products and also feature a store and employees that are already packed to the gills. but they are all there to buy ios devices, not laptops/desktops.

There not as stupid as the new State Farm ads but they do bother me. I miss the simple ones like the retina display MacBook one. If they did more like that with Morgan Freeman and Oprah narrating that would make the best commercials ever.

The ad about the man buying an apple fake is not bad, as there are a lot of windows ultrabook copycats with the same design to confuse new users. The ad was clear, to the point and with the usual apple arrogance/disregard to the windows machines.

The other 2 ads (baby delivery & plane ride) however were absolutely horrible, i thought it was done by some phone carrier at first. Cant believe those got approved by apple - definite a wtf are they thinking moment.

Now we wait for the iphone5, if this turns out to be just another hardware upgrade with a bit bigger screen, apple is indeed falling backwards.

With microsoft's surface tablet coming - that runs NATIVE windows os, it will get very intense. I am not sure you guys realzie how huge it is to run native windows os on a tablet. Their vision of a unified os for tablet, phone, & desktop is extremely powerful if executed correctly.

Apple needs to step up. Ipad3/macbook basically was just the retina display, iphone 4s was siri. Now they need something more groundbreaking.
