the ads are not THAT bad. The WORST ad I ever saw was the Microsoft ad where they give a person some money to buy a computer and the person heads to the Apple store only to find that the money they were given is just short of the price of a Mac, so being disappointed they settle on some generic Windows notebook PC.

The message was "of course you want a Mac. It would be everyone's first choice but you can't afford one. But's that's OK because this PC is not so bad after all".

I'm not kidding. It was as if Ford said "We know you want a BMW but we are cheaper and almost as good."

MS pulled those ads quickly.
I'm assuming you are talking about Microsoft's "Laptop Hunters" ad campaign? That actually ran for a while and was apparently successful as far as ad campaigns go.

The perceptions of value the two brands offer has shifted dramatically in the eyes of 18- to 34-years-olds since Microsoft began running its "Laptop Hunters" campaign in late March. Apple's "value perception" has fallen considerably, while Microsoft's has risen.

"This is effective advertisement, and I haven't seen many effective advertisements from Microsoft," said Ezra Gottheil, an analyst at Technology Business Inc. who covers Apple.

The ad about the man buying an apple fake is not bad, as there are a lot of windows ultrabook copycats with the same design to confuse new users. The ad was clear, to the point and with the usual apple arrogance/disregard to the windows machines.

The other 2 ads (baby delivery & plane ride) however were absolutely horrible, i thought it was done by some phone carrier at first. Cant believe those got approved by apple - definite a wtf are they thinking moment.

Now we wait for the iphone5, if this turns out to be just another hardware upgrade with a bit bigger screen, apple is indeed falling backwards.

With microsoft's surface tablet coming - that runs NATIVE windows os, it will get very intense. I am not sure you guys realzie how huge it is to run native windows os on a tablet. Their vision of a unified os for tablet, phone, & desktop is extremely powerful if executed correctly.

Apple needs to step up. Ipad3/macbook basically was just the retina display, iphone 4s was siri. Now they need something more groundbreaking.

Who in the hell wants to run native Windows on a tablet?

Talk about sadomasochism. Geez.

I agree^^^ They're made to target people who have had problems (using windows) using computers for the easiest task. Windows is so horrible that the average computer user EXPECTS a simple task to be very difficult. I think the commercials are pretty decent. It doesn't describe the end user to be as "stupid" as most would think. It realy just points out the preconceived notions that all computers are difficult - except the mac.

People read into this stuff way too much...

:apple:

As someone who has switched my entire family over to Macs (save my grandparents and one out of four siblings, and that's only because her fiance bought her a crappy chromebook), I can relate to these ads, and your comment. People who have never touched a Mac really don't get how easy things are to do. And having seen the "aha" moments going to Mac from the underworld time and time again, it makes a lot of sense; people really do think Macs are just like any other "computer" only more expensive because they "look nicer". Once they get in front of one and someone shows them a couple things they can do and how easy it is... you hear "Oh!... Cooool!"

I don't like those ads. So uncool, so generic, so mainstream, so fast-food style, they are made for.... well, not me!

While I enjoy these ads and see nothing at all wrong with them I really do not think that they are for anyone posting here. If you know enough to find this site and post your question then you are not the target.

Re: Apple New Ads

I love the "Basically" ad.

I was on the floor, rolling.
I love it because, I know some people, before they converted, said "basically" the same thing. Pun intended.

I haven't seen the others. Until you have been the support guy on the other end for family and friends, you cannot fully appreciate that commercial.

"Basically" shows the SAME thing I come across all the time. I think you can never under estimate people's stupidity or lack of knowledge.

I know someone who bought an Android phone because they saw the weather on it.

The one about baby announcements is 100% atrocious - poor acting, contrived situation, and the product demonstration/explanation is barely there.

Thud indeed!

They were a miss with me. I was sitting with some PC friends and they looked at me, "really?" Needless to say, I was a bit embarrassed.

The first time I caught one on the air, I was confused how someone else could legally use an Apple genius in an ad like it was a campaign mocking Apple and then it ended with a Mac logo...

If your going to run ads that look like everyone else's, then I expect product prices to drop 50%. Because these ads actually insult and diminish the equity and value built into the DNA of the Apple brand over the last couple decades.

Garbage ads, garbage campaign.

So you relate an external ad companies advert to Apple failing? You really need to learn how stuff works. Sorry, but it was a really stupid post. Microsoft has been putting out crap adverts for years, yet continue to dominate the markets that those ads are meant for (e.g Xbox).

wait you think microsoft are quality?

You do realise these are on the official Apple youtube channel right? That means Apple signed off that it was up to their standards.

well...i don't think they are horrible but i agree that they are not up to Apple's standard.

i was shocked when i saw them and the first thought in my head was that Steve never would have greenlit these.

jobs micromanaged every thing. i doubt cook ever saw these. the ad guys outsourced the job and saw a few and said ok.

they need to learn to up the game

Apple need to sue themselves for putting these out in public.

They cannot possibly be worse than the stoner girl ads from the get a Mac campaign.

Mac's were always billed as user friendly, yet this ad implies you need a genius to get anything done... have to agree w/Ken Segall... bad ad.

I have to agree

I wrote this [long] comment on Apple's marketing campaigns I thought may interest some.

Apple [generally] developed a series of ads that involved characters; people the viewers could either relate to and find amusing. The "Mac vs PC" ads were such an instance; the two actors appeared in a steady ad campaign that developed into viral marketing. Justin Long gained much notoriety as did John Hodgman (they even had talk show gig's in which they discussed their ads at length). It got people talking.

Jeff Goldblum was the face and voice for Apple iBooks/PowerBook's/iMac's/PowerMac's for several years. He brought his quirky persona and well recognized voice to Apple, which many ad exec's attribute to Apple's growth in the desktop market (of course OS X was the bigger prize there).

Before Goldblum, Apple launched the "Think Different" ad campaign. For myself, and many others, this was a gold standard of excellence. A well written narrative on people who have influenced humanity in many area's was voiced by Richard Dreyfuss and gained much respect in the advertising industry. Many differing versions existed, some longer than others, and one voiced by Steve Jobs himself was released to the public (Dreyfuss later replaced Jobs in the final product). Many mark this ad as Steve Jobs' return to Apple Computers; it was one of the first major influences in the company as leader since his return.

My point: Apple has always relied on campaigns that involved character development, thoughtful writing, and well directed productions. No fee was too large, no expense too extraordinary. Now there is a gold standard that Apple has established, and many are basing their recent advertisements on those standards. It seems Apple is more focused on smaller ad campaigns featuring celebrities as themselves, or these which attempt to [humorously] focus on their software applications. Unfortunately, there seems to be a disconnect between the audience and the ads; the ads lack polish, witty repartee and characters to involve the general consumer. Develop characters, tell a story in a more focused and long term campaign strategy. These actors don't engage the general consumer; where is the Mac or PC guy that we grew to love or hate? Where is the story line? Where is the long term thought? There isn't.

Apple needs to "Think Different" again.

I liked the ads... of course the fact that I think the guy's cute might make me a little biased, so..... ;D

How about an iPad, it can do email and facebook! Oh and how about a Macbook Air! You can use iPhoto! Did I mention we haven't updated any of the iLife apps for about 2 years now?! They sure are great though.
