Isn’t Netflix still losing money from buying random (crappy) content from different studios all over the world, and now they keep increasing prices? Good thing my internet and TV service provider pays for it now as it’s included in my plan.

Apple TV+ offers great shows that I really enjoy, and that’s more important whether I am still on trial or not. They are more quality shows than any of the most talked about Netflix shows.

I really believe the pandemic and lockdowns that caused production halts have something to do with Apple extending trials twice. They already bought a lot of movies and TV shows that were planned for 2020, but then nothing. Plus, their price is still reasonable even with their pace of releasing shows every month.

Does he have data to support this statement, or is he guessing?

(He's guessing.)
It seems unlikely he’s guessing. I’m sure he has an extensive network of people working in the industry, and Hollywood gossip is as ‘leaky’ as it gets. So yes, it’s anecdata, not an official report, but I’m sure his impression is pretty close to reality.

The easiest way to produce content that most people will watch is by adapting book/comic series into shows/movies. Netflix keeps ordering live actions and those seem to pay off just fine.

I have spent zero seconds on AppleTV+. It doesn’t help either that they don’t make an app for AndroidTV. If you want to be a streaming content provider, you push your stuff to all hardware platforms.

Or not. There is no rule-book that says you have to do that, especially when you're a massive company that doesn't need to do that. Remember, for them, the service is just a small side-gig. Does Google provide all of their services on WebOS? No. So it's fair game, if you ask me.

He’s right but Netflix has always been over doing it with crap. Last few years all they have is voiceover foreign shows I just can’t stand. Some stuff is good here and there but the quality difference between apples stuff and Netflix is pretty clear.
apple does need more content but I’m okay with having things that are actually good with high quality then tons of stuff that’s horrible.

Disney has almost no new content. We get it 1/6 months to catch up on anything that came out. When my free membership from Apple expires I am off that as well as very little interest my family (but Ted Lasso is the best show I have seen in a long time). Shocked how little content HBO has but ATT giving it free so who cares.
Disney is full-on this year, they're pumping out original content almost every month, though - mostly Marvel and Star Wars. But still, targeted specific enough to boost subscribers amount by quite a lot.

I bet 9/10 people on the street never even heard of the show. I only hear about apple shows when I’m here on MR.
That will change if it wins awards it is currently nominated for. That has been Apple's strategy from the beginning.

They simply need a drastic increase in content. Buy someone that has lots of pulp. Decent pulp. Otherwise people watch all the content in a few months and cancel. Amount of content rules this industry.

Besides Wandavision and Mandalorian, what have they recently released that is original? I've been looking for another reason to launch the Disney+ app on my AppleTV for months now.

I used to be a Marvel and DC fan, but even I am starting to get sick of it all. It's just too much. Superhero stuff used to be a nerd thing, then it became a cool thing, and now it's becoming the new version of soaps. How many more stories about the same thing can I watch until I get bored of it? Marvel and DC TV series ruined them. It was fine while there were a couple every year, but now there are so many you can't keep track of them. Or maybe I am not enough of a fan...

AppleTV+ should make a 2nd tier price like $20 and allow up to 4-5 free movie rentals per month.
On the one hand, it obscures the value proposition by hiding their lack of back catalog but on the other hand it will confuse the value proposition for most subscribers so Apple would probably not implement such a strategy. They are already the goto place for back catalog rentals of movies and TV so they don't need to give away that for free. They just need to establish themselves as a serious player in the original content category by winning more prestige awards and talent partnerships.

Skimming over Apple TV+ content - zero interest in anything so far. Heard ok-ish reviews for a couple of shows, but that doesn't really budge me. Disney+ however,... wanted to sign up multiple times already only to always find out, it still isn't available in my Region (in central Europe). In 2021. Which is just ridiculous for a big name like Disney.

Personally I feel everything I have watched on TV+ has been worth my time. To be fair though it is currently free. Generally I pay for Netflix one month of every year, but I believe I am overdue and haven't seen enough recently to pull me back in for another month. Very likely HBO Max will get another month from me before Netflix does.

I have been very impressed with offerings from Pluto TV, Tubi, and now Peacock (free tier). I also watched the complete series of Schitt's Creek for free on CW Seed recently. There's plenty of content out there for free if you're willing to watch just a few ads. Hoping Paramount+ will also have a free ad-supported tier. I've watched so much Star Trek TNG on Pluto TV the last year - I'm sure a lot of people have.

What’s AppleTV+ market share of smart TVs? Meanwhile, almost every Android OEMs are now churning out Android smart TVs on the cheap (Xiaomi, Realme). Netflix, Disney+, all are on that platform, along with the rest of competitions from China/Asia that you guys never heard of (weTV, catchplay, iQiyi, Viu, etc they are all quite popular in emerging markets). Apple won’t have a chance if they are not at least making the entry point available to people. Or Apple TV+ will only be a niche western market only service. If that’s what Apple wanted, then I guess it’s fine. Meanwhile the likes of Tencent and other Chinese/Asian streaming providers are ultra aggressive that even Netflix is paying attention to them.

Thing is he’s kinda right. TV+ definitely has quality content but has a tiny amount of content.

The other big issue with their TV ventures is the fact that everyone (including Apple it seems) thinks that TV+ is the only thing they’re trying to sell in their TV App. There’s also a whole set of “TV Channels” baked right into the app that no one seems to talk about or even knows exist. TV+ are the exclusives of the TV App, and the TV Channels (like CBSAA, Showtime, AMC+ etc …TV+ itself is a channel) are the answers to the legacy content meant to go along with TV+, giving users the choice of what they want to tack on in addition to TV+. This is where Apple is dropping the ball completely. Channels (like HBO, Smithsonian, MTVhits and Comedy Central hits) are dropping one by one. And other single-entity services like Disney+ Peacock and Discovery+ are all forgoing being integrated in the TV App that way as they don’t see it as profitable.

So yeah Apple needs to work harder on TV+ with content, but they also need their channels service to succeed if they want TV+ to succeed. Apple needs to sell the TV App as a product, not just TV+.

Both feet to Netflix means "dumping gobs of money on content with no measurable worth, getting way in over their head, and having to raise prices 3x in one year to make up for their gross incompetence."

I have Disney+, ESPN+ as well as Apple One Premier, but cancelled my Netflix subscription late last year. Since AppleTV+ is baked into every tier of Apple One, my number will be counted even if I never watched a show (correct?). Streaming and licensing are the main gig for Netflix, but Disney and Apple have other ways to generate revenue.

Agreed.

they need to buy rights to something people actually want to watch. People are becoming addicted to streaming services. Apple has what? The morning show? See? Even HBO Max raised by wolves spoke to me more than any show on Apple TV. Buying big name movies is a start but giving Oprah all these shows isn’t the move.
Try For All man kind, Servant, Tehran, Loosing Alice. and some of the feature movies ...
(See is meh)...
Over all Apple TV is new... give it some time to mature!
