Wonder if Netflix were in the streaming market "with both feet" when they were still mailing DVD's around the country...? Apple TV+ hasn't even been around for two years yet, and we've had a pandemic to deal with (which will affect production output, as it has with all the platforms). Give them time.

And the stuff on TV+ I've seen so far has been excellent.
Netflix created this space and so I think that they have earned the right to state their peace. That said, if I weren't getting Apple TV for free, I would not be paying for it. Yeah, the content is good, but there sure isn't a lot of it.

Apple is great at creating devices to create and access creativity. Pretty much no one does it better. Going further into actually producing content just doesn't seem to work as well for them. Others do it better. In streaming, they've been playing catch up for so long, my expectations are lower for Apple in this arena, which is an odd thing as a fan of Apple products since they began.

Thank you captain obvious 🙄

Not like the service has been out for 10 years.
Neither has Disney+, but they have almost 1/2 as many subscribers as Netflix. I have never watched any AppleTV+, but I also have never seen anything advertised or heard of anything that interests me for even $5/month. Netflix, Prime, HBO Max, and Disney+ have just about all of the bases covered. HBO Max is on the chopping block as I have watched what I want to for now.

I’m intrigued how many people actually subscribe to Apple TV+ and pay for it as a standalone sub vs either get it because they bought a device or because they bought an Apple One bundle.

today I would expect Apple TV+ to have a really low churn rate as many are still not paying for it. I’m not sure what evidence Netflix would have to say different, or rather what incentive they would have to describe Apple TV+ as a success.

(On another note the pandemic really came at a bad time for Apple TV+, but theyre probably making up for it in other areas)

i have a Disney subscription too but Whilst it has lots of content, I’m not into Marvel or Star Wars so it barely gets used.

I agree with you on this. There really isn't a lot of must see content on Netflix either. A few things a month for me. But there is the rub with me an AppleTV+. I love the content BUT at this time there isn't a lot of it with the expecption of kids connect which I feel is quite good but misses me as a demographic. I know in time, two or three years from now there will be more than I have time to watch but at the current rate of a show or movie a month it isn't enough. I understand it's all about pacing but if it's ready to roll. Let's put it out.

We are in a content renascence! There are many good shows available across the different services.

As for AppleTV, it's excellent! Ted Lasso, Tehran, The Morning Show, Amazing Stories, and Mythic Quest are all outstanding.

And for comparisons, Apple has probably 4 times more new content than Disney+! Don't get my wrong, I love Mandalorian and Wandavision, but that's the only two shows that I know of on the service. They have other great content, but I've seen all that.

I think Apple is doing an excellent job and putting out great content!

Does he have data to support this statement, or is he guessing?

(He's guessing.)

I'm wondering why Apple would have any significant churn when the vast majority of users are still on free trials. That alone makes me think everything this guy is saying is made-up nonsense to promote Netflix.

There's an Apple TV App and AppleTV+. The Apple TV App shows content from other providers, whereas Apple TV+ is Apple's thing.

Since they have the same icon except for the +, it's not necessarily clear that you have to go one more step in the Apple TV app to get to the Apple TV+ zone.

And since they're trying to make it a meta-video site, you can add the other streaming channels into the Apple TV app...which makes it even more confusing.

Hastings is pretty much right on when he says Apple needs to go all-in. This is like a committee product.

He's right. The pandemic also hit at the worst time for someone starting a streaming service without a back catalog of content to provide.
That's the biggest issue for me. When I'm browsing an online streaming service, it's not the latest and greatest I'm always looking for. Lots of time I just want to see an old classic, or something that I've never seen from the past.

No such option on ATV+, they realize it, thats why they're still giving it away.

Honestly though, If they never address it, they'll never have the numbers as the others.

The pandemic should have HELPED viewership - that “and during a pandemic” excuse is simply that. Excuse culture to allow bad things to justify failure and lack of achievement and courage. Are things harder? Yes. Is it ideal? No. Are there people and companies that can get it done regardless? Yes. Is Apple proving to be one of them with regards to content and increasing paying memberships? If what Netflix ex CEO is insinuating is true, appears not.

Netflix co-founder and former CEO Marc Randolph recently spoke to Yahoo Finance, where he commented on Disney+ and Apple TV+, two Netflix competitors in the streaming market.

Netflix-16x9.jpg

Randolph criticized Apple's free Apple TV+ offerings and the number of subscribers that are still not paying. Apple has been offering free year-long Apple TV+ subscriptions to those who purchase a new Apple device, and has already twice extended the free subscriptions of those who initially signed up in 2019.

"If Apple spent one quarter as much time on content as they do on giveaways they really could play," Randolph said. "They have no excuse [and] they're still not in it with both feet. They really have to do the entrepreneurial thing and walk up to the edge of the cliff and jump."

He went on to explain that Apple TV+ has the "highest churn rate" out of all the available streaming services. "You can't keep replacing people," he said. "You've got to give them a reason to stay."

On Disney+, Randolph said that the streaming service has "fought its way up to a really strong position" with its continuous slate of new content. "It's really a war of who's prepared to make the content," he said. Disney+ just today announced that it has hit 95 million subscribers and could hit Netflix-like numbers in just a few years. Netflix currently has more than 200 million subscribers.

Netflix last month said that it plans to release a new original film every week in 2021, and of the streaming services, it has one of the largest content catalogs available. Disney+ was also able to launch with a huge amount of content, and Disney has regularly been introducing new Star Wars and Marvel shows, among other titles.

Apple built Apple TV+ from the ground up and has been adding new content regularly, but the streaming service lags far behind its competitors. Apple has never announced subscriber numbers, but said at the beginning of February that it had seen record viewership with the launch of Justin Timberlake movie "Palmer."

Netflix is really a one trick pony. Given enough time apple with grow it’s offering (it wants to). Apple can also undercut in price. Say offer AppleTV+ for $5, or always free for a year with a new purchase of a phone. But the real deal in packaging tv not as a stand alone but as AppleOne, which includes light gaming, fitness, news & magazine, music, tv, cloud storage. Now that is something different then Netflix.

You forgot Apple Arcade. It's fine though so did everybody else.

Netflix green lights way too many projects. There’s so much garbage to wade through to get to anything good now.

I stopped using Netflix about 6 months ago, I’m not missing it. I’ve got too much other stuff I have to do with my limited time.

AppleTV+ might not have loads of content, but I know if I pick a new show to watch the probability of me liking it is going to be pretty damn good. Definitely cannot say the same about Netflix.

I see it more as just growing pains due to a lack of content available right now. Unlike music streaming, video streaming is not mutually exclusive, so it’s possible for consumers to be subscribed to multiple platforms.

I completely agree. Everything I've watched on Apple TV+ feels like it was filmed for ABC Family.... boring! Where's the exciting content? Where's the stuff that's rated R or Mature. Even something like For All Mankind should have been exciting and it's a total snooze fest. As it stands right now, I would never pay for this service or have it outside of a trial or bundle. I hope the Apple execs will stop steering the shows so much and let the experienced pros take the wheel.

I understand your point to some degree. But, I can tell you as a father, my son loves, the new children’s shows Stillwater, and Helpsters. There are tons of parents out there looking for good childrens content. Point is there are lots of families with kids, you were one once too.

Isn’t Netflix still losing money from buying random (crappy) content from different studios all over the world, and now they keep increasing prices? Good thing my internet and TV service provider pays for it now as it’s included in my plan.

Apple TV+ offers great shows that I really enjoy, and that’s more important whether I am still on trial or not. They are more quality shows than any of the most talked about Netflix shows.

I really believe the pandemic and lockdowns that caused production halts have something to do with Apple extending trials twice. They already bought a lot of movies and TV shows that were planned for 2020, but then nothing. Plus, their price is still reasonable even with their pace of releasing shows every month.
I recall various countries have requirements that a percentage of content has to be locally produced for Netflix to operate in those countries. I think that is one of the reasons you really have a very wide range of content. Netflix is also operating kinda like Carolco Pictures in some ways, it gives many producers a way to market their content to different markets as well as fund those risky TV series or films. I will agree a lot of efforts are not great, or not allowing English audio tracks only English close captions. But they do score with some good TV series or films on occasion. I'm sure some would think that is few and far between. :D

Comparably Apple TV + is very new and needs a chance to grow its available content and take off since Apple doesn't have content partner that can provide a number of films or TV series. ;)
