Disney is full-on this year, they're pumping out original content almost every month, though - mostly Marvel and Star Wars. But still, targeted specific enough to boost subscribers amount by quite a lot.

Thats good news. I’ve got the Disney+, Hulu abs ESPN+ bundle that I was about to drop after finishing off the most recent season of The Mandalorian because I already own most of the Marvel movies and all of the Star Wars films but then Wanda Vision came out so I hung into it until enough episodes came out to binge and was going to dump the bundle in favor of Hulu with no commercials but if they’ve finally got new content coming out I’ll hang onto it for a while longer.

Family perspective

Tier 1; Netflix has always been the default streaming service. It has big catalog of new and old stuff. Having shows from different countries is also big plus for us as European/Asian family.

Tier 2; Disney+ is working for us well because of Marvel and Star Wars. If those would not be popular for everyone in the family Disney+ would be in the tier 3. If the quality of these franchises go down it’s down to tier 3 for the team Mouse.

Tier 3; HBO and Amazon, 1 month subs occasionally to watch some specific show.

Free tier; Apple TV+ is suffering from the lack of content. Ted Lasso is the only show we would pay for 1 month sub. Morning Show was ok, but overrated. Defending Jacob, Mankind, Greyhound were also ok. Rest not so. See, Truth be told, Amazing Stories we gave up watching after few episodes. Without proper international catalog best Apple TV+ can do once it’s no longer free is the tier 3.

Despite the critical reviews of some of their marquee series like The Morning Show and Ted Lasso, I just don't get the appeal. Almost all of the shows they've put out feel like what you'd watch on primetime network TV, there's nothing interesting or original about them. This is why Netflix and now Disney have been doing so well; they're putting out content that isn't just milquetoast concepts that are just the same basic plot in a different wrapper. I'm not even advocating for more R-rated content, I just want to see something that isn't a loose rip-off of the many series already on TV.

Dropping apple + when trial runs out. We never watch it and those that we have tried have been meh. Netflix new weekly movies have been really crappy so far also but they have so much other content that Apple doesn’t. Disney has just been awesome. It’s used daily in my house.

I like ATV+ rather a lot. Seems like once a year it gives me a couple new shows to watch that are quite good and 1 so-so, and costs me nothing. Not a service I’d pay for, but since it’s free, I feel like I’m getting slightly more than my money’s worth.

Good:
See
Tehran
The Snoopy Show

So-so:
Morning Show
For All Mankind

I imagine Dickinson is probably quite good, but I need to have something to watch 6 months from now, so I’m saving that one for later.

Ted Lasso really surprised me. It is much better than the trailer made it look.

Apple couldn't care less about capturing market share. The only people who seem to care are Netflix and a few forum posters who dislike the content.
Give me a break...of course Apple care about market share. Is Apple music about market share, of course it is.

Gimme a break Netflix. I recently unsubscribed because all they do is raise prices, stuff more old movies in and add soaps one after the other.

Not to act like an Apple fanboy, but Apple doesn't have to be in the streaming business with both feet. They can afford to even give it away for free for all eternity as a nice perk for buying Apple hardware. Heck, I would. That alone is an extra reason to buy an AppleTV box or any other hardware. I paid for a while, and then got it free when I bought my M1 machine, and honestly, I think the quality to volume ratio is higher than any service out there. When Netflix started out as a streaming service it was full of utter *****, same goes for Amazon Prime, and frankly Disney+ until recently was mostly for kids - though they are raising their prices too to stuff another service inside it.

So far everything I watched on AppleTV+, I thoroughly enjoyed, and don't say that because I have to, but because I genuinely did. Netflix's CEO should shut up, and be happy that Apple isn't trying to be in streaming with both feet, as that could mean the end of Netflix itself.

I'd actually prefer if Apple kept it's offerings to a sustainable level where they only produce quality programs.

Netflix has some good content, but also a lot of crap filler.
Why would Apple want to strive to be the PC equivalent of streaming platforms?

I’m sure there are people out there that don’t like Schindler’s list and that’s considered the number 1 movie ever. Not everyone is going to like everything.
Right. I can’t watch that movie. We tried a few months ago but turned it off 20 mins in.

Does he have data to support this statement, or is he guessing?

(He's guessing.)

There has been reports out there that the few people that didn't get on a free trial (because once you subscribe you're never eligible for the free trial) dropped it like a hot potato after a month.

Who on this board is actually paying for it? Listen for the crickets....

Isn’t Netflix still losing money from buying random (crappy) content from different studios all over the world, and now they keep increasing prices? Good thing my internet and TV service provider pays for it now as it’s included in my plan.

Apple TV+ offers great shows that I really enjoy, and that’s more important whether I am still on trial or not. They are more quality shows than any of the most talked about Netflix shows.

I really believe the pandemic and lockdowns that caused production halts have something to do with Apple extending trials twice. They already bought a lot of movies and TV shows that were planned for 2020, but then nothing. Plus, their price is still reasonable even with their pace of releasing shows every month.

You people crying about Netflix increasing prices.... that extra buck is a bone of contention, but you'll spend $50 on an obscene Apple dongle and other over priced accessory shouting "take my money!"

Never mind that half the people crying about "Netflix raised thier rate a dollar!" probably get it free through their wireless provider or something.

I don’t think Apple is going to be a direct content producer of gritty dark stuff. Or not immediatly, and if so more Pg-13 to R and not NC-17.

Yet the show that has actually brought them an audience features Justin Timberlake bare ass naked 8 minutes in.

The only way for Apple to “put both feet in.” Would be to buy a studio and all of the rights to its content. While at the same time keep bringing out original content

TV+ is an extra for me with the Apple One Family bundle. Not watched everything, nor will I, but it' nice to know there's something different on TV+
UK Streaming services other than TV+ are a muddled mess, I find the same thing on UK Netflix/UKTVplay/Amazon/BBCiplayer/ITVplayer/4od all the time, and it gets a little exhausting.

Wonder if Netflix were in the streaming market "with both feet" when they were still mailing DVD's around the country...? Apple TV+ hasn't even been around for two years yet, and we've had a pandemic to deal with (which will affect production output, as it has with all the platforms). Give them time.

And the stuff on TV+ I've seen so far has been excellent.
Neither has Disney+, they both launched at the same time. And of course Disney+ has the benefit of a huge back catalog, but even in the new content department they have done much better than TV+.

Yeah, with every network and studio out there essentially now offering their own direct to consumer service, the back catalog Netfilx is mostly junk.

They are right to focus on original content as all the various rights to other content is starting dry up.

Apple just went a different route than most of the services like Netflix as they only started with original content rather than have a revolving door of thousands of random movies and shows from varying licensing agreements.

I don't know if Apple ever reads this stuff but, they need to stop with the all too perfect family shows. You need a Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Fleabag, The Wire, Chi (First two seasons). They can't keep up with just PG13 shows, you need to pepper in some real ass R rated shows.

No one from Netflix is quoted in this article.

While I am certain Randolf has a vested interest in Netflix succeeding, these are very clearly his own thoughts, not a statement from his former company.

Apple is in with two feet, it's just that in this metaphor, they're a centipede.
