I think that you're the first to use a 3G SIM and try to reactivate. If you paid the subsidized pricing, you're stuck on the $30 data plan for the next two years.

really? have you read this thread at all:rolleyes:?

my account now says $20 iphone data+200 text

iphone restored now running my original iphone on 2.0 back on $20 plan and have the tms4 code for 250 extra texts at 3.99 and u200 code for 200 bonus minutes still on my account

so does this loophole still exist? has anyone been caught yet?

You can still do it and I don't think anyone has been caught yet. Tricking their system to charging you $15 or $20 instead of $30 for the data plan will save you some money until they close this loophole.

If they catch this and change you back to $30, and then you change it right back a second time to $15 or $20 because they still haven't closed the loophole, then that would be stealing.

The only thing that worries me about the process is that your account will have a feature line item called "IPHONE 3G TRKG" which I assume is a tracking tag. They will probably run a comparison report periodically to find people with incorrect data plans, at which point, game over.

Only if they know you have an iPhone to begin with. I suppose for most folks that will indeed the case though, yes.

An update on my situation: My billing cycle ended on the 26th and just as has been hypothesized by many folks in this thread (including myself), there was no audit performed and no change to my service or data plan. So for this month at least, everything is business as usual.

Actually I reactivated my wife's iphone 3g back to the $20 iphone data plan and after a couple of days, the iphone 3g trkg just disappeared.

As to whether they will track you down and change your data plan back to the $30 data plan plus text, it's in the contract that ATT has the right to change you to the appropriate data plan. So I'd do it until I'd get caught.

I did the same thing on my iphone 3g data plan. ATT will never catch me. I use so many different phones on my same line (blackberry, moto q, v3xx, old moto v180, iphone etc) the system has no clue what I'm using on a day to day basis. The last rep who looked up my phone said I was using a Moto Q global, I told him I used it 2 days ago, but I'm using an unlocked Blackberry.

So I guess if you consistently you the iphone 3g 100% of the time on the wrong data plan, one of ATT's audits will eventually catch you but if you are like me who switches SIM's into different locked and unlocked phones, ATT will never catch me.

well, Im not trying to get away with anything. I really am using my first gen iPhone as I sold my 3G for a hefty profit on ebay. If they switvh me back to the 3G plan I dont care because with my corporate discount it will actually come to a few dollars less each month, I will just get 200 less texts, which I don't really need...

For what it's worth, I upgraded from a 1st generation iPhone to the 3G, paying the subsidized price. While my contract was extended 2 years from the date of purchase, my plan remained the same; I have not been charged the rates of a new customer or new iPhone user, which I was told was the defining line.

Really? That's very interesting! How did you purchase your iPhone? Did you give your AT&T account info to the store at that time? Did you activate it in the store? With your old SIM or new SIM? And finally, when did the activation, did it ask you to pick one of the new data plans?

I too was doing something similar....I had a 1st Gen iPhone then switched to my unlocked Blackberry overseas, I came back and the 1st Gen iPhone data was working on my Blackberry for a few months after I sold my 1st Gen iPhone. Now I using the same plan on my 3G....they have no idea what phone you are using and I doubt it has anything to do with whether you switch phones often or not or whether you consistently use one phone.

I purchased the phone at the Apple store, gave them my acct. no., and activated the phone in the store. I received a new SIM card. I was not asked to pick a new data plan; in fact, I asked to keep the same plan.

I think AT&T is across the board on this. On two occasions, I asked if I would have to get a new rate and data plan - a total of $30 additional $ per month for me! I was told yes and decided I would just update the software and keep the 1st gen phone. But, shortly after the 3G came out, I had to talk with AT&T support about another issue and just happened to ask the tech, who said I could keep my current plan. After confirming this with another AT&T rep and Apple, I went for the 3G. At some point in all this, I even offered to buy an unsubsidized phone if I could keep my current plan but was told that wasn't necessary. So keep asking 'till you get the answer you seek.

How should I get a 3G then to avoid it getting activated in stores?

(I've held onto my first gen because of the hike in monthly cost of the 3G, so obviously this information is intriguing to me to say the least)

I know that if you buy it from AT&T there is no way in hell they'll let you out of the store without activating it.

Any update on this loophole? Im upgrading to 3g soon and was wondering if this is still working.

my bill was really weird. they gave me small data bills here and there that still added up to about 30 per month. if this next months bill is still crewed up I will call and tell them to just put it back to the 3g plan

How do you avoid the activation process in store? Is this only for phones outside of the US where you can "order by mail"? and then activate at home?

I'm still using the $15 MEdiaNet plan with mine. First month's bill came and went normally with no additional fees.

I do know for a fact that there is a note on my account that indicates I do not have an iPhone data plan. So they know about the situation. But they haven't opted to do anything about it.

How did you manage to add the medianet plan instead of an iphone data plan when you activated your phone?

just called and got my data back down to 20 bucks where it should be and removed my upgrade charge of 18 bucks. tried to add cll2 but she was a stickler so Ill try late tomight and see if I can get someone else who will....

so spaz :p:p:p

haha well if you guys get a kick out of cheating 15-20 bucks with the plan hear this.

I originally had a contract with Cingular for a slvr. Texting, but no data. Cingular went all AT&T on us and for my 2 year renewal upgrade thing I got one of those Walkman 580i's. Still just texting (family plan texting btw. Like 30 bucks or whatever, you all know)

Then one of my buddies bought a 3g when it came out and gave me his 1st gen.

So I have a 1st gen iPhone on my familys plan with family texting.

So technically I get a 1st gen iPhone with unlim texting for more or less 40 bucks a month. Thinking of a way currently to get data.. I don't want to show up to at&t and have them be like WTF your using iPhone you haxor!!

But I do need to have the phone jailbroken for it to work =]
