Engadget reports that Apple has just received approval from a certification board for four new iPhones with capacities ranging from 4 GB to 32 GB.
4GB to 32GB -- that's one hell of a range, but we're hearing from a trusted source that new iPhones in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities just garnered approval by the PCS Type Review Certification Board, the standards body responsible for certificating handsets for use with some carriers (AT&T, for instance).
Engadget believes that Apple is unlikely to deploy high-end hardware and software features on iPhone models with capacities as low as 4 GB, suggesting that Apple may begin offering models differentiated by more than just storage capacity. Numerous rumors regarding an "iPhone nano" with scaled down hardware and/or software, as well as speculation regarding software-driven differentiation, have long pointed to the possibility of such variation in Apple's iPhone offerings.

Makes sense. The Iphone is a little computer. It's time there are different models for different needs. Like the macbook line.

I'll take a 32gb with a 3.2mp camera, a faster processor, more memory, and a better cell radio please!

Maybe that means:

4GB = 2 - 3.2 MP camera
8GB = 3.2 MP camera
16GB = 5MP camera (video recording)
32GB = 5MP camrea (video recording)

4GB, WTF? :confused:

I'd be all over the 4GB (assuming a good price).

I've always enjoyed the 1GB shuffle. Since I sync with my computer every 1 or 2 days I don't need a lot of capacity for music...

And apps hardly take up any room and I never use more than 5 at a time anyways.

Still leaves 1-2GB for videos (which I don't use the iPhone for at all- besides spaceless Youtube videos)

There is no 5MP. would be more like

4GB = 2 MP camera
8GB = 2 MP camera
16GB = 3.2 MP camera (video recording/focus)
32GB = 3.2 MP camrea (video recording/focus)

Scaled down hardware or software? I'm not sure how smart that'd be on Apple's behalf. I mean, the iphone's supposed to be an all-in-one device, which by "watering down" the features to create a more compact version kinda defeats that purpose. Also, didn't they already try a 4 gig when the iPhone was first launched?

You never know. There were once rumors of 3.2 AND 5 MP cameras.

So it still could come true.

4gb is the iphone nano people. Why would a compact version defeat the purpose. You don't make sense. The compacted hardware version is, well the compacted hardware version itself. True there may be some cuts in the performance or features, but I know so many people who thinks iphone is not worth it because it is gigantic compared to some phones.

Nope

I don't believe it for a second. It didn't take long for Apple to ditch the 4GB model. Why bring it back now?

yeah i see it odd to intro a 4GB unless they are trying to intro some "low-end" model

Why not? If you don't need a ton of music or take a lot of photos, what do you need lots of memory for? Not email or web surfing, and most apps don't take up huge chunks of space.

So if you could offer a 4GB for $99+contract, or even free with contract (8GB: $99; 16GB: $199; 32GB: $299) you could get lots of people into the fold. AT&T just wants the data revenue, so for them they'd love a cheapy model to "give away"

I'm really afraid I'm going to give into my gadget habit and upgrade if the new hardware really delivers. I've only had my 3G since last September and it's still going strong but damn, I'm going to be living on a student's budget in a couple of months' time. Gonna be hard waiting for the upgrade eligibility in March if it's too good.
