Segmentation is the name of the game here folks. We'll know what Apple has planned by the middle of this month.

Still not interested unless you can sell it to me with no data plan. I have no reason to spend $70 a month on a phone. Hell, $40 (well 50 after taxes and txt) is almost too expensive, but what can you do.

In belgium you don't have a data plan and the iPhone costs € 525 for the 8 Gb and € 630 for the 16 Gb.

I had a 4GB 2G iPhone that had more than enough storage for me. Might go for it again if it has all the features I want like video recording and mms.

Will you pay $400 for it even with a 2 year subscription required?

I would. I paid that much for my BlackBerry Bold before they added the $100 rebate at AT&T.

Is it time to post a big "I told you so" to all the people here who berated every body who explained that Apple would do precisely this (offer lower end hardware) to differentiate the iPhone line?

I think it would be pretty humorous to see what the self proclaimed experts who posted that "Apple only builds high end hardware, they will never sell a low end iPhone line" have to say now.

Apple said they simply wanted to make the best phone in the world. They haven't said anything about making cheapo crippled versions of the best phone in the world! The one thing apple are consistent on is playing the branding game and perceived brand exclusivity. By selling an iPhone that's scaled down or differentiated in any major way other than storage capacity they dilute the perceived value of the brand... You may be right, but I really would be suprised if they did it...

Why not? If you don't need a ton of music or take a lot of photos, what do you need lots of memory for? Not email or web surfing, and most apps don't take up huge chunks of space.

So if you could offer a 4GB for $99+contract, or even free with contract (8GB: $99; 16GB: $199; 32GB: $299) you could get lots of people into the fold. AT&T just wants the data revenue, so for them they'd love a cheapy model to "give away"

While it's true that you'd bring a lot of people into the fold, the COST difference to Apple between 4 and 8 GB is probably $10, not $99. So where is Apple's motivation to save you $100 when it only saves them $10?

Well, I have to pay full price, since I'm not eligible for an upgrade right now and the most I'm willing to spend is $300. So whatever is $300, I'll be getting it.

Nevermind. On family plan, one of the lines eligible for upgrade in September. I can wait until September for one.

I really hope they don't go the "software differentiation" route. That seems awfully Microsoft to me, kind of like their half-baked (and thankfully repealed) notion to let Vista Starter Edition only run 3 apps at a time despite no technical reason why it couldn't run more. The reality is, if they attempt to differentiate the models by imposing artificial restrictions the hacking community will certainly find a way around it. I hope Apple is better than being reduced to this kind of move. Now, if the high-end "iPhone Pro" (that's my vote for the name!) had significantly better hardware that could certainly open up a new level of application complexity. That would be a much better way to differentiate the models!

Just my $0.02

Yeah what fr0 said

and to make $0.04,
I think if Apple did make some software restrictions or nano size iphone it could make the app store a awful buying experience.:eek:

Let me join the guessfest...
Apple keeps the existing iPhones as the new low-end models (now with OS 3 and a lower price-point though) and introduce two new iPhones as the high-end models (more RAM, video, GPS, OS 3 etc).

If that was true, why would there be shortages anywhere?

What about the iPod Touch? If low end iPhones arrives with cheaper price, who's gonna buy them, i'm using touch, i love it, but i prefered it because of 32 gig. What's gonna make iPod Touch special now. 64GB?

What a crazy suggestion! Where is Apple going to find that much flash memory? :rolleyes:

/sarcasm

The touch will always be perfect for people who just want an iPod and don't want a new cell phone (and the associated bill). The touch will be cheaper after the first two months, even if it costs $200 more than an iPhone.

Explain to me how someone getting a $99 4GB iPhone with the hardware functionality of the original 1st generation iPhone is getting a "crippled" iPhone?

Many people still simply want what the original iPhone offered, but at a lower price. If Apple releases a $99 4GB iPhone that does not include magnetometer, GPS, video camera, etc, then how is that releasing a product that dilutes the line?

I really hope they don't differentiate too much with software. I understand if they leave out a piece of hardware that as a consequence excludes software specific to it. This makes sense to me. But if the hardware can run the software even in a lower capacity phone like the 4gig model, then to me there's no reason to exclude software. It will just anger customers, IMHO.

I do think its possible we might see the 4gig phone with reduced capabilities in china. This might be concessions that apple has to make to get into the china market.

Maybe that means:

4GB = 2 - 3.2 MP camera
8GB = 3.2 MP camera
16GB = 5MP camera (video recording)
32GB = 5MP camrea (video recording)

This makes sense to me and I would definitely go with the 16 or 32gig model.

If 4 GB launches worldwide, there'll have to be some sort of software or other hardware differentiation because storage is so cheap nowadays, there'll be very very little savings for Apple between 4 and 8 GBs.

I have been saying this over and over. It is obvious that  needs to put out a smaller form factor iphone. So bring it on!

...Now, if the high-end "iPhone Pro" (that's my vote for the name!) had significantly better hardware that could certainly open up a new level of application complexity...

People have often noted that the iPhone is a mini-computer. Evolving the top end into something that's MORE recognizably that, seems perfectly logical.

two cameras in each phone - my guess - mark the date ;)

1 for video conferencing - video phone calls (small)

1 for big pics and better resolution video

you heard it hear first...

...because the apps in the app store are all designed for the current screensize and it would make a lot of them obsolete if a new iphone had a smaller screen size...

can someone explain to me what's diff in the way the iPhone handles graphics, and the way Macs handle graphics? Then I could understand why there can be 13, 15 and 17" (heck, even 24") Mac screensizes without affecting their applications, but if there are two sizes of iPhone screens, Apple's phone world goes to hell in a handbasket?

Nike Sensor!?!?!

As long as they have the nike+ sensor built in I'll be happy (at least in the 16 and 32GB models)
