Up the market share

I loved the post about the iphone being a gateway drug into apple ownership. I myself purchased a macbook based on the user experience of my ipod. We may well see a very low price or free iphone as both the carrier and apple will gain new customers. The carrier always makes the most money from monthly plans and apple still get paid a set amount from the carrier plus a new user with which to target the brand.

The iPod was for a while (the halo effect). But hey it affected me. Bought an iPod in my last year of college, bought a Powerbook for university the next year.

Here are my 2 cents on this :
-no 4GB Iphone
- 8GB Iphone for $99 (maybe Apple will keep the current model with upgrading it with the 3.0 OS)
-16 GB Iphone for $199 (better life battery, 3.2 megapixel camera, video recording, copy & paste.....)
-32 GB Iphone for $299 (better life battery, 3.2 megapixel camera, video recording, copy & paste......)

P.S: I think that it will awesone if apple added a flash to the camera

What is the real price difference between 4GB and 8GB of flash memory? I'd venture to say not much anymore. Why even bother with the difference unless you differentiate other features? Its why I would guess that a 4GB iphone would be based on today's 3G hardware (HSDPA only, no fast upload), no video chat (despite BGR/FiDo), but otherwise no other feature differentiation.

4GB PAYG and/or developing territories (based on cheaper, current iphone hardware)
8GB $129
16GB $199
32GB $299

Methinks copy+paste will be on all the models, if there are more than 2. It's an OS feature, not a hardware feature.

I think something that the people who say "the 4GB iPhone failed and no one wanted it" forget is that the original 4GB was $500 plus tax. I remember waiting in line the day the original iPhone was released and everyone in line was asking each other what model they were getting. It was a unanimous "8GB" and most people's reasoning was "it's only $100 more, I'm already spending quite a bit, I'll be able to put more media on it, etc". Now that it's become a mainstream device, more people are wanting the experience but don't necessarily need the space.

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they expanded the line like this.

I believe this is quite smart.

Plus Apple gets 30% of all paid apps sold :D

So what?

The existing iPhone has so many "deal breaker" shortcomings that it will not matter if these issues are not resolved. Yea, Apple will still sell a bunch, but that does not change the fact that the iPhone does not "bring you the entire internet". In particular, without Flash implementation, internet access is crippled.

The internet is not crippled without flash. Everything you can do with flash you can do with HTML5 which the iPhone will work with. It just takes a web designer to quit playing that a system hog that flash is.

Oh please. You are going on like every other phone out there can handle flash web pages, which 99% of them can't.

There are much bigger and nastier problems and shortcomings with iPhone that Apple will fix with 3.0;

1. MMS
2. Bluetooth A2DP
3. Landscape mode for all text entry apps.

etc.

The 4GB iPhone might be destined for the Chinese market. I'm not sure if we know which agency did the testing for the 4/8/16/32 models but it wasn't the FCC which means that those models might not even be bound for the US.

Honestly, I care very little about the iPhone's lack of flash capability, but to suggest that stereo bluetooth and landscape mode are bigger issues is a bit ridiculous. While maybe 10% of the world cares about the iPhones lack of flash, it cant be more than 2% who care about bluetooth stereo and it cant be more than 5% who care about landscape text entry which will make such a tiny difference.

<snip>

No, I am not going on like every other phone handles Flash.

What's your point? My point is the iPhone doesn't work very well on the internet.

That others have similar problems does not make the iPhone work any better.

hej britlover - I totally agree with you on this one. it is perfectly sane to release a 3" with same resolution as 3.5" iphone. it would be insane not to.

alright, so first post now. i know apple have said they dont want to clutter the iphone line, but think about it like blackberry. a lot of kids are happy buying the curve and it doesnt have 3g. but it can go on facebook and get email and such. is it crazy to think they would have and iphone nano with say a 3" screen with the same 320x480 resolution (so as not mess with the 3rd party apps), 2g only, basically just a scaled down original iphone, price it between $50-100, and the data plan would be way cheaper ergo better for kids and they could expand their users since most iphone buyers are making over 100k. im not saying i would buy the iphone nano, i just dont see why people are going so crazy about the idea of one, makes sense. and i dont see it as a low end iphone, i see it as an amazing phone better than wat 80 percent of people are using, and the iphone pro as something that we're lucky to get

99% of phones don't even display the internet, you just get text only!

And 63.59% of all statistics are made up! All jokes aside, how many phones are actually capable of Flash? I haven't missed it all that much, aside from the occasional annoyance, but I'm savvy enough to find information elsewhere if I need it.

The Flash issue is not just a matter of information or the infamous overproduced, slow Flash video presentations. The real problem, for me at least, is that many web sites use Flash for everything from buttons to other items necessary to either navigate or use the web site. While this may be unfortunate, it is reality. The use of Flash in building web sites is growing because it is easy and cheap.

Apple (meaning Steve) appears to have personal issues with Adobe in addition to whatever technical issues may be involved.

all of these things are great and exciting, especially for a VZW user like myself - however, has anything been said about the dropped call/dead zone rate for the new iPhone hardware? Is it improved or expected to be improved?

Wow, 7 pages and little time to read all...

Won't the 4 Gig be the "nano" - a smaller capacity rather than different size?

$99 for the 4 Gig and 2 megapix camera?

I love my original 4 Gig. I use it more as a phone, PDA, and Apps. A little music and music videos - no TV shows or Movies (I have a laptop for that).

4 Gigs is great for a lot of people...

Then, the other iPhone models with a 3 megapix camera at $199/$299/$399?

trade in my 16gb for 32gb!!!

Okay- time to save up for the 32gb!!!!! I'm kind of shuddering at how much they'll charge for this..... maybe they'll consider taking in old iphones and give discounts to purchasers just wanting to trade up..? :(

I don't understand why people are buzzing on this 4GB being a watered-down version. Why? Think about it rationally. You pay for capacity so it's reasonable that there could be a 4GB for $99. I don't think any of the other prices are going to change. If we do see a 32GB, it'll possibly be a $50 bump instead of a $100 bump enticing buyers similar to the iPod line.

There's really no reason that a 4GB should be hindered by anything except capacity.

4GB = $99 with all the goodies
8GB = $199 with all the goodies
16GB = $299 with all the goodies
32GB = $349 - $399 with all the goodies

Mark it.

Good point; I have a friend who wants an iPhone primarily for Internet access at work because they're so heavily filtered, but has 0% interest in ever putting any music/video/etc on it

If there is a 32GB one that would be more than decent.Most of my space used on my current 16GB is taken up by a few apps, home movies of Family and friends (Edited within iMovie),Tons of pictures taken of my family and friends.Only a hand full of songs. That being said ,I have over 3GB worth of pictures(I never delete them although I still sync them to iPhoto),5GB worth of Self made iMovie videos of family and friends.
I read within the thread comments about the rich only being able to afford an iPhone. Well im far from rich, just tuck money to the side for what I really want. And ANYONE could own an iPhone as most of us know right around when the next Gen iPhone will be released, leaving plenty of time to save.
Last year I used my stimulus check which I saved to get mine.
This year I might sell my 3G iphone (Which Apple replaced for me on April 4th with a brand new one). They are going for no less than 450.00. I have been seeing a pattern of the 16GB ending at right around 600 or better.
I was able to get 700 for my 1st Gen last September . And the 1st Gens are still selling relatively well on Ebay.

All this to say that there are ways to afford/get a new iphone if one really wants one
