To achieve the price point for the low end iPod Touch they needed to cut back on things like RAM, the IPS display, etc., they don't intentionally "gimp" products.

True today, but when the next Touch comes out with 512 MiB, the "smart" game developers will consider enhancing the game to use the extra memory - and the 256 MiB generation will either be abandoned or will play the game with reduced features.

It's all part of Apple's planned obsolesence game - make a few extra bucks now, and sell one from the next generation earlier (and send the current models to the toxic waste dump).

IOS devices aren't "future-proof", they are deliberately designed to be "future-resistant".

Apple doesn't "gimp" products. There are many other possible reasons to the above, other than that Apple simply left them out to boost sales later, although I'm not saying that can't be the reason, merely that everyone seems to lean to the latter.

With the iPad, for example, Apple isn't going to announce FaceTime before its on the iPhone because it'd give third party apps like Skype a head start and FaceTime wouldn't get as much as a push as they want. It also probably wasn't ready at the time and it'd have required more money and time.

I'm not saying the reason, or one of the reasons that they left it out wasn't to boost sales next year, but I see the above as more realistic.

im no technical genius, the Ipod has no phone capabilities. perhaps that extra 256mb on the Iphone4 is to handle the phone and sms constantly being on and available whilst running other apps? it may not take 256 of ram but it would make more sense than putting in 128mb chip and a 256mb chip

It seems to be enough to run snappy and speedy media player. There are always room for improvements for future generations of products.

It's still a good buy especially if your still on a first generation. The verdict is still out for me until I see what ipad 2 will bring. I do know It's not worth buying both ipad & ipod touch at least not for me.

I think that they have got it about right, love the design and usability of the product.

Just a note for all those detractors, Im not a sheeple, fan boy or whatever the new term is, what I will say is, that Apple is a company, like all companies its ultimate goal is to make money, so if they make a product that will make them a billion one year and they then upgrade it the next year and make another billion, then in my eyes, that is good business, if one disagrees with this principle then don't buy the product or slag off those that do, it's no secret that all successful companies by definition make money.........Get real.

the 256MB ram will extend the life of the 1st gen Ipad if newer hardware is coming out with the same RAM footprint.

Still doesn't make sense that neither Ipad or new Ipod touch came with more than 256MB though.

That's what I'm cheering about. With that 256MB RAM lingering and lingering, that just means that Apple has to support those devices longer and longer. Besides, there is no reason at this point not to. What feature could they add that is more of a hog than multitasking? If they can come up with some reason that 256MB is not enough - don't add it.

I think that iOS 4.x is the end of iPhone 3G, but if they keep adding 256MB in NEW products, I think my 3GS has a good update life left in it. As well as my iPad and iPod touch 4. =P

Well, that's how long it's been since i was personally involved with those details (i used to get dividends, IIRC). My portfolio manager handles it all now... perhaps you'd like to clear up the mystery with him?

Game. Right. Macbook vs. Macbook Pro? What is that comparison? Because they want a consumer notebook and a professional notebook? FAIL.

i5 vs. i7. Ok. Why? This is once again, to offer a premium to premium customers. FAIL.

iPod touch vs. iPhone. Umm. An iPod / PDA / Gaming device vs. all that plus a phone, highly subsidized. FAIL.

FireWire was fading away anyway, but it isn't dead. It's on the professional notebooks. Go look.

No camera. There was no use (still isn't, but whatever), and there was no backend for there to be a use for a front facing camera, much less a rear facing one. I mean, come on. I want to be THAT dingus who wanders around holding my iPad in the air taking pictures. FAIL

No BluRay. It isn't that BluRay STILL isn't widely adopted, is very expensive, and the iTunes Store with iTunes LP cannot cover the same interactive features that BluRay does? And who watches movies on their computer anyway? FAIL.


You need to get off your anti-Apple trip, and live with it. Don't like it? Don't buy it. And leave MACrumours.

If you want iPhone like specs buy a ****ing iPhone with a 2 year contract if 256mb is not enough.

Point im making is there is really no difference between 256 and 512 on ipod touch or iphone. I've used my friends 3Gs compared to my 4 and guess what?
