Only reason why the iP4 has more ram is because of the 720p video recording.

Where do you live? Your internet must be slow, we have known for a week that there is a 720p camera...

How many people wouldn't have noticed/cared if this news wasn't let out I wonder?

Not much... maybe while having a couple apps open, but even then, you need to have compared with an iPhone 4.

I went from 3G to iPhone 4. HUGE improvement. Definitely worth the upgrade.
He's most likely talking about the touch 3G, which has the 3GS hardware. Not as big a step as iPhone 3G -> 4 (2 HW generations).

Seriously???

i'd have to guess that since CPU manufacturing yields aren't perfect, the iphone gets the top notch stuff. ipad and ipod get the chips with defects which means they have to disable circuitry

back in the day when the Pentium Pro first came out with cache on the CPU die, yields were very low due to defects

So you really think the iPhone manufacturing process of Apple's partners has such amount of "defective" parts that is enough to supply the millions of iPod touch that are build... What kind of conclusion is that one, how you got that one?

If such amount of defective parts exist Apple would be losing money, big time!
It only comes down to the fact that they know how to build their gadgets and profit from them bringing products that satisfy and excel customer expectation. 256 RAM is more than good, never saw an app hanging, no spinning ball in the realm of iOS devices. Want good prices? That is how is done, simple as that. Specs are not important as it used to be when you have a company that knows what are they doing.

I guess this dispells the myth that iMovie is the reason why the iP4 needs 512MB of RAM since iMovie is now available for the Touch too.

what rat finks! not including 512 ram that we won't notice in performance terms anyway! they need to throw in a faster processor, a better camera, better display, more ram, and gps and keep it at the same price points as the 3rd gen. god, i hate apple.

</sarcasm>

This is why Apple doesn't advertise the amount of RAM in its mobile devices. People get fixated on comparing numbers without considering whether the device actually does what they need/want it to do regardless of RAM size.

If you want an iPhone4 buy an iPhone4. The new iPod Touch looks to me like a reasonable product for its price. If you disagree vote with your wallet.

While this is somewhat disappointing, I am upgrading from a first gen iPhone to the iPT 4... I still expect this to be a quantum leap with double the clock speed and multitasking...

Your 3GS has the same RAM and a slower processor.

Understood.

It just wouldn't be a huge upgrade in speed as I was hoping. You still gotta refresh the pages if you have too many tabs open in Safari.

Anyways, I don't think I was really planning to buy one anyways :p

Bummer, but it does bring the price down. I doubt this will effect app usage.

lol @ the people who actually thought they were getting iPhone 4 without the phone.

Be realistic, you iPod touch buyers got a hell of a lot of features from the iPhone 4, but it was never going to be a like for like spec comparison.

Why do people expect the ipod touch to be the same as the iphone 4? its NOT an iphone! Stop complaining!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

Yeah....
I'm getting an iPad

great post! if the os is efficient enough not to use more than what it requires, why put more ;)

None of you will benefit with 512mb of ram.
Only reason why the iP4 has more ram is because of the 720p video recording.
Don't forget, even with multitasking, iOS apps rely on 32mb of ram.

The ipod touch with 256 ram also records 720p video.

What's interesting to me and something that some commenters pointed out on Engadget is how the pictures are so inferior on the iPod touch. They reference how clear the 720p video quality is and wonder if Apple is purposely gimping the camera capabilities to charge for an update at a later point. I'm curious about that too, it has to be at least 3MP to record that type of video right?

Thanks again apple...

This is my first post and would like to say I have been a die hard apple fan since 1999. Over the years apple has been squeezing mucho $$$ from the masses and limiting top line hardware. This is evident all across their product lines, some recent examples include the long wait for macbook pro updates with the 13" still with a core 2 duo chip, the mac mini with price increase and core 2 duo, the low 256 ram in the ipad and now evident in the new ipod touch. Also the new nano lacks video and a camera and costs the same. :(

If you look in the breakdown of materials in apple products, apple generally makes at least 50% off all products (likely more with them moving to in house manufacturing and large production volumes).

Like apple doesn't have enough money in cash already. Not surprising here.
:mad::apple:

Ha ha ha !!!! That's damn funny!

Now can all the people who moan that the iPad has too little ram and is already outdated please shut up!

Apple only allows apps in the app store to use a certain amount of RAM anyway!

Please, somebody give us a realistic price for having an acceptable camera and 512MB RAM in the iPod Touch.

But of course, then some people wouldn't have to bend over for AT&T and other networks abroad to get an excessively priced iPhone 4 as the Touch would be a fantastic deal.

So what should I get instead of my ageing (my second one is only 11 months old) and officially outdated iPhone 3G, which by the way I stopped using for phone calls, since the battery life is poor?

1.) An iPhone 4 with cracking monkey glass, dropping calls, stupid rubber band that needs cooking to fit and the embarrassment as people just push your nose into the crap of buying a FAIL phone...

OR

2.) an iPod Touch with the same amount of RAM as the previous version (16GB, 32GB) and with the still picture quality of a six years old phone?

Hmmm... it is a very difficult decision. I'm starting to think that I should just give up hoping that Apple will ever produce a single product that matches the technology and reality of the age.
