and you wanna whine about the figgin ram????!!!

notice that it has all these improvements yet COSTS the SAME MONEY as BEFORE!!!

omg MORONS!!!!!

Jobs LIED. Get over it. You MORON!

I've been doing some looking around, and I still have my doubts that just because the markings on the A4 are the same as the iPad that it has the same RAM configuration as the iPad. The A4 connects to it's memory via a package on package configuration -- i.e, the A4 is connected to the RAM directly below it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_on_package

You can even see this in the picture of the A4 that Apple used -- here is one I found, for example:

http://iphonepk.net/2010/01/ipads-custom-apple-a4-processor/

The markings on top of the A4 in the iPod touch could very well mean that the iPod touch is running at the same speed as the iPad. And it's also possible that the RAM chips are 512MB, just like the iPhone 4. We just don't know. And we won't know until a developer with a new iPod touch actually writes some code to find out exactly how much RAM is in the machine. Craig Hockenberry did this with the iPad back in April:

http://furbo.org/2010/04/03/benchmarking-in-your-lap/

So, I wouldn't start getting worried about this yet -- we'll find out more in the next day or two.

pardon me if i may have misquoted but seriously people are idiots acting like apple disenfranchised them because they didnt get the 512mb of ram that they are ENTITLED TO! how much ram is on that there oled zoon? wha? oh yeah... it completely sucks! what about the sandisk mp3 playe... err they all suck. the ipod could stand to still not have an update and still be the best portable computer/ mp3/ multimedia handheld device on the market. Period.
that being said, it would be nice to have 512mb but it's still the best thing out there without it. they dont owe me 512mb of ram or 128GB of memory. freaking spoiled rotten people on this forum piss me all the way off. the most undesirable character trait is the sense of entitlement these people have. i want to remove the needlessly disgruntled masses and banish them to ZUNETOPIA!

I have not been disenfranchised. I have been lied to by the CEO of Apple computer, Steve Jobs. Weird this is, no one on this forum cares if he lies.

Banish me, oh Great one. Banish ME!

You're a BAD A$$. I'm gonna stay away from you.

How many times do I have to say it to all you haters?

What you pay is what you get.

If you want more RAM, then shell out the money for an iPhone 4. The iPod touch is great for its price already.

You been in a cave?

I actually wrote the reason in my other posts.

I will also add that he lied in this statement, "iPod touch more popular than Nintendo DS and Sony PSP combined".

Even Apple worshipers can't back that one up.

It depends on how you interpret the message. The iPod touch is definitely outselling the NDS and PSP combined in terms of sales in the last few months, not in terms of total units.

Before you call me an 'Apple worshipper', I'll let you know I have both a NDS and a Wii.

Hrm, that's not what he said actually.

I think he did say that.

You thought wrong.

I tried tracing back to the post you speak of, but i got tired seeing the trail of "He lies" posts.

Whatever "lies" you keep referring to, you're still getting more than last year's model. for a difference of $30 more dollars.

Well, it kind of sucks from a consumer point of view, but this will extend the life of the other 256MB iDevices in terms of development "lowest supported spec' and prevent devs from leaning too much on the comfort of 512 MB.

Additionally, the 256MB of memory will extend the time between charges, what a ******* thing to do to a portable device. Let's force Apple to throw any and everything into the Touch so we can all complain about what a short charge it holds!

*sarcasm*

1. The Screen.

2. Calling it an "iPhone without a contract". It is far from it.

Edit: My complaints are, for the most part, not with this device, they are with people who lie or mislead or support those who do. My nephew has the 2g/3g 8G Touch that is about 2 months old and it is a great little device. I'm sure this version is a lot better.

damn finally the i Pod Touch gets a camera, but the 256mb of ram is a bit limiting (if its true, have to wait and see).

Ever try to play a game that requires more then the amount of ram in your system (it sucks). there is a few games in development that will uses the extra ram (from memory i know its a first person shooter).

you also got to think that the Ram is shared with the GPU so you will have a bit less then the total.

A few games coming out are developed with the iPhone 4 in mind (hardware wise, with 512mb ram), what do you think is going to happen if someone will try to play the same game with the new touch (with only half the ram) ?

(again if its true) it will split up the market even further by doing this, i would have happily paid for 512mb ram then vs 256mb. to me that is going to limit what the developers can do on both platforms, because what the devs can do on the iP4 they might not be able to do on the iPT because of less ram.

...

...
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but the A4 in the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch isn't running at full speed (1GHz) but at a reduced clock rate of 750~800MHz to stretch the battery lifetime.

I have a mowhawk!!!

Honestly the pissing and whining is what pisses me off. I get so angry that I install windows ME on the computers of the co workers I hate. With no drivers.

I am a dangerous vindictive man.

Yet again, I can't believe the amount of ignorance found in this thread.

You want 512MB of RAM? You want an IPS panel? You want a 5MP camera? You want a GPS chip? Then shell out the extra money for an iPhone 4! No matter what you say, the new iPod touch is an amazing value for money. It's like less than half the price of an iPhone 4 and has 75% of what it offers. If you still have complaints about the iPod touch, what are you even doing on a MAC forums?

I'd think that most of you should be happy Apple cut the RAM down to 256MB to reduce costs and appeal to those who don't want to shell out $800 for an iPhone 4. The choice is there, people. There's no room for your complaints.

OK, IPS, 5MP camera, and RAM is too much, but come on, no GPS? The GPS chip is only $2.

iPhone > iPod touch. Forever.

512MB couldn't be that much more expensive!

Apple would prefer that you buy an iPhone 4 instead of an iPod touch. They make more money per sale, thanks to the initial carrier subsidy and also the kickback AT&T gives them from iPhone 4 users' data plans.

That AT&T subsidy also means that Apple can't just strip the cell phone chip out of the iPhone 4 and sell it at the iPod touch price at a profit. They need to remove more features to keep their component costs down to hit that $229 price point.

And it also ensures that the iPod touch experience won't match the iPhone 4 experience overall. Close but no cigar. If you want the full iPhone 4 experience, you'll just need to buy an iPhone 4.

Guaranteed none of you will notice lack in speed or performance. Everyone just knows 512mb is better than 256mb.

These are the same people who get all worked up over iTunes and other various apps not being 64-bit, despite the fact that very few of them would ever know the difference without being told.

You thought wrong.

I didn't quite liked this particular slide when Steve showed it. It is misleading because there aren't as many iPod Touches in the world to surpass the combined numbers of Nintendo and Sony. Sorry Steve Not the #1. At least not yet.

FYI: Apple is currently selling about 6.9 million iDevices per month!

That seals it for me, I'm not going to upgrade even though I sold a new 3rd gen yesterday.

lol. And what were you going to do with 512 MB of RAM that you can't do with 256?

We've come a long way since the Commodore 64 haven't we. Funny though, I don't once remember any of my friends or I ever sulking about the fact that it only had 64 KB (yes, KB!) of RAM. We just did cool stuff with it! Come to think of it, the same computer kept us happy for about 5 years. I suppose the bigger the expectations the bigger the disappointment huh.

Yep, we've come a long way. ;)

It is $2 here, $5 here $1.98 here. All the pieces add up.

You cut $35 off the cost to make an iPod Touch, that means $350 million dollars for every 10 million sold. So it is not just $2.00. It is one piece of billions of dollars.

It seems you don't understand what outsells means, is all.
