Like many people have said,"if the cost of living is dirt cheap", then maybe it's not so bad. Now for the working conditions that's a different story. raising wages doesn't mean better working conditions, it just mean they are trying to stop the workers from forming a union.

I would prefer that we go the other way and pay them less because I am a Republican.

As a Republican I also frown upon contraception because it reduces the number of new slaves being created.

As a republican I am very concerned with the Taxation of the Job Creators involved with Foxcon

Hey Apple, how about using your mega billions and do the patriotic thing by retooling America's manufacturing and bring back jobs to the USA. And I don't want to hear the same ol story...oh that's impossible...oh that's too expensive. BS.

Apple is raking in more profits than God at the expense of American jobs.

THIS GOT NEGATIVE VOTES !!!!!?????????????

$290 - that's about a typical entry level salary in the poorest countries of Europe, e.g. Ukraine and Moldova.

...and in the mean time Samsung is building factories in US.

Just a matter of time until the Chinese workers will become too expensive.

Then I guess we have exploit the African population.

Just like the US did centuries ago with all the slaves on the farms?

Stats from 2005:

Half the world (over 3 billion people) live on less than $2.50 per day.
At least 80% (over 5 billion people) live on less than $10.00 per day.

Foxconn workers can SAVE $290 per month while having essentially zero expenses.

Some people here should get a broader perspective of how the rest of the world lives.

Stop applying our work standards and expectations to Chinese workers. How would Americans feel if Sweden, for example, demanded GM provide better work conditions because they didn't meet Swedish standard. We'd give them the finger. So why can we demand China do what we think is right. Let them determine what is and is not acceptable and let us focus on improving our own work conditions.

Wow, third wage hike since 2010, and this last one a 16+ % raise? I work at a small American company. Same place I've worked since 1988. Since 2000 I've received 2 raises of about 3%. I'm non-union. My wife who IS a union member has worked at the same place since 1990, and she receives regular raises that *almost* cover the increased taxes and union dues each year, so it's pretty much a wash.

Why? Private small American businesses are barely staying alive, much less being in a position to offer raises. Good thing we both like where we work!

Only $290 a month? What is the cost of living over there anyways? They couldn't even afford an iPad that they're making :(

you are right dude...$300 sums upto Rs.15000 in india, which i am telling you my friend is the avg salary here...an ipad costs 32k, and for god sake an iphone 4S for 45k...
i luv you apple but please tone down the price a lil bit.:apple::apple:

You may not realize that, but for most of Apple's customers the USA is a foreign country, and they would disagree with price hikes because jobs move from a foreign country with low wages to a foreign country with high wages.

See above. Apple is an international company.

I would be fine with paying more money for an iPhone ...

... if I was ensured that the extra money got to the workers. Yes, I am high.

See above. Apple is an international company.

But what YOU may not realize is that Apple IS an American Company and used to make all of their products here in the US.

The profits they are raking in are pretty much criminal. They like being here in the US but they refuse to wok within the US system.

After NAFTA the corruption in Major Companies hit new highs.

If you are working in a typical U.S. city, your pay rate is lower than many other parts of the world.

Boycot your own products, you are being mistreated! Stop buying American!

I think the problem here is that we believe they are not meeting minimal standard of compassion for fellow humans. Sweden probably couldn't argue that we overwork or don't pay them enough. And to my knowledge GM isn't housing employees 20 to a dorm room. And last I checked there weren't suicide nets on US factories. I haven't heard of mass suicide threats either.
And btw, China is currently suppressing Tibetan people, culture and religion, and they are burning themselves alive because of it. Is that the kind of country you want to leave to its own devices?

This isn't about expectations, its about basic human rights and dignity. And China has a poor track record in this area, no thanks to American practice of exploitation of other cultures.

Edit:
Here's another way of looking at it. From your point of view, if your neighbor beats his kids, and you know it, it's okay because its not your house or on your property. Is that clearer?

Probably because the dollar is so weak they can save money on shipping elsewhere and exchange rates.

That's why Toyota does it.

The reason Toyota is in the USA is because they were offered non union labor in right to work for less states, like Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Indiana and so forth where you don't have to offer health insurance, or benefits or retirement pkgs or 401Ks or even have to offer a livable wage, Texas where Samsung's plant is has the countries lowest amount of people with health insurance (nice race to the top). Atleast Samsung a Korean company can afford to mfg their products here in the USA, its funny that Apple has double and triple the amount of assets that Samsung has, yet poor old Apple can only afford slave labor (talk about greed) in the little old town of Shenzhen. Its funny that the new ipad2 and ipad3 chips will be fab'd in the USA then shipped all the way back to china for install/assmbly without breaking Samsungs bank. Much like how the G5 cpus were fab'd in upstate NY then shipped back all without hurting the bottom line. Apple's too cheap and greedy and has grown accustom to paying $1/hr wages and will settle for nothing less.

So how long have you been a union rep?

So how long have you been a union rep?

So far zero. I'm not pro-union, I'm not anti-union. I'm just saying the whole reason Toyota chose the USA was because those states passed right to work legislation that made it so Corporations that otherwise would normally employ union labor don't have to, and also make for existing companies (under criminal charges) to pickup the cost for non union members that want union benefits and work, but can't comprehend paying union fees/dues.

2,200RMB isn't much nowadays. Unless FOXCONN provides additional employee bus shuttle, housing allowance and free meals. 2,200RMB still consider bloody low for high-tech labors.

they are not meeting minimal standard of compassion for fellow humans

And THAT's the core of the issue here. Well said.

However, the thing that bugs me about this whole Foxconn debacle is that everyone is focusing on it as if it's a unique and surprising incident. I believe this is mostly due to the fact that Foxconn's association with Apple makes for big headlines and increased readership. The problem with that is that it's sensationalistic and biased journalism, and it ignores two very important related issues: 1) as others have stated, Foxconn is not just Apple's big supplier, but they are the LARGEST supplier for everyone else, from HP to Microsoft, to Nintendo, and 2) This problem (of low wage workers operating in terrible conditions) is not just limited to Foxconn or the tech industry, it's present in most workplaces and industries in the developing world and 3rd world (and even to a small extent in the "1st" world). When you buy those cheap plastic goods at the dollar store, or those cheap clothes made in taiwan or India, or even those imported fruits and veggies, those workers don't have it half as good as the workers in Foxconn do.

Now, don't get me wrong: conditions at Foxconn should be improved, although doing so is easier said than done (if Chinese workers suddenly made the same wage as those of us in the U.S. or Canada, the world economy would literally collapse). My hope is that conditions for these workers around the world will improve gradually, and yes, Apple does have some responsibility in this, but so does every other manufacturer of every type of product made in similar conditions. Which, quite frankly, makes up the majority of products bought by us in the "west"!

It is irresponsible for the media to report on these matters in the manner that they have been doing... but, unfortunately, that's the way most of the media works. The serve not to truly inform, but to generate sensationalism and headlines. :/

But the reason they are making more cars here just recently and shipping them back to Japan is the cash. It's all of them, I only mentioned Toyota, but it's all three, I believe. It's quite an inversion from the traditional USA position in the car industry.

BTW, unions have mostly been superceded in the USA by federal law. I'm sure there are still violations, but now those are violations of actual laws. Unions that I've seen around here, mostly nursing and pro sports, are a complete joke. They overcharge their own workers on dues, and create bizarre "needs" to fight over with management.
