I would love if Apple announced the next iPhone, without 3G. The riot online would be so priceless it would be worth losing 3G!

I agree that would probably be worth it. I just hope the 3G phone has something more than 3G to make me sell my current iPhone to get a new one. Or not. I guess if it was only 3G I could live with my edge.

I highly doubt that it'll happen the day before Steve Jobs keynote, that would kinda deflate the whole WWDC event. Next, I also doubt that someone at AT&T would know the exact date, Apple is pretty secretive.

I think it will be announced at WWDC with a release later on that month. That's just a prediction, nothing definite. Makes sense though.

I'm willing to bet that it will be available when announced. Apple is not going to halt sales of current phones for a month or take back that many exchanges for 15 days.
Announced during keynote with immediate availability along with an announcement of a new product available for the holiday season. Just not sure what the new product will be.

I agree.

Not doubtful, primarily because of the reason I mentioned.

But all of a sudden, something that was crippled to work with the US's archaic EDGE network becomes relevant to the large number of advanced 3G capable nations worldwide, coupled with numerous reports of multiple carrier ("rest of world") availability & dealings with networks in Japan, India, China, Australia, Italy... while 3G coverage remains patchy at best in the US.

Vs

"People get cheques".

Hmmm.

I've been waiting for the second big revision for the iPhone before I purchased one. Not because I care so much about 3G, although it would be nice, but I just wanted it to have some time on the market to make sure the quirks and bugs have been fleshed out. Now that I've heard so much good stuff about the phone, I'm pretty excited to be getting one this year.

1, 2, 3 Million for Europe and/or Asia... it will greatly depend on what deal Apple makes with local operators. Locked iPhones, and exclusive deals with only a few operators, will not be good for sales in Europe.

No, it if is is split 2:1, it will be U.S. 2, Other 1. There are many reasons for this, including the stimulus checks.

It's called stimulus check not iPhone check. Just because someone will get extra money doesn't mean that they will spend it on the iPhone.

Europe and Asia are much much much (can't stress it enough) bigger market of 3G technology compared to the US where most people don't even know what 3G is.

Just because it's an American product doesn't mean that it has to be available in larger quantity in America, I think the goal is to sell the iPhone, not to have stock in US stores unsold and lots of angry people over the Atlantic who cannot get one.

I'm sticking with 1:2 (1M in US - 2M rest of the world)

iPhone in Canada

I just saw this on Breakfast Television (Canada)

Rogers Issues Statement on the Apple iPhone

TORONTO, April 29 /CNW/ - Ted Rogers, President and Chief Executive
Officer of Rogers Communications Inc. today issued the following statement:
We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the
iPhone to Canada later this year. We can't tell you any more about it right
now, but stay tuned.

The iPhone coming to Canada later this year!

...and I thought it was going to be until 2012

Cool. Someone possibly won the contract to assemble the new iPhone. If it was just won, how quickly could Apple begin shipping? I assume that they would have to build some stock before filling orders and sending them out to retail stores.

Well, as the thread title says, production beginning soon for a few million units in June. Should be able to handle the initial wave of purchases, I'd think.

If you don't think Apple isn't going to promote America's most iconic phone from the maker of America's favorite music player that happens to be Time's invention of 2007, that received worldwide mainstream coverage, and that most non-techies even know about at a time when a large percentage of the country is getting $600 cash, you must be insane.

Europe and Asia are much much much (can't stress it enough) bigger market of 3G technology compared to the US where most people don't even know what 3G is.

I can't stress enough how much of a misconception this is. AT&T has 3G in most metro areas, and will provide it to most of the country by year-end. The CDMA providers have had 3G phones out since 2004. Additionally, the second-gen phone isn't only going to sell because of 3G (although, of course, people worldwide held out because the current model is 2.5G)

Just because it's an American product doesn't mean that it has to be available in larger quantity in America, I think the goal is to sell the iPhone, not to have stock in US stores unsold and lots of angry people over the Atlantic who cannot get one.

It won't be unsold.

If it is split this way it will be the opposite.

I remember the days when these forums had such a happy vibe...

Yeah...maybe this was the time, when pages 1 and 2 were not flooded with every new article claiming to bring the same rumor up.

Come on...it's getting worse than AI's constant posting of Shawn Wu's analysis.

Basically there's a new iMac out, and it's a very exciting step. But this news gets hammered with 'some new Far East newspaper picks up a story about the next iPhone generation going into production'.

I'd rather have some news on the new iMac (real life performance, benchmarks, overall feel). But this site is becoming more or less 'iPhone rumors' these days. And the iMac threads get hammered with 'I don't want glossy' whining.

Yeah. I miss the happy vibe, too. MR always was a nice read back in those days. :(

What about the 10 million ordered rumor a while back? ;)

I'm hopeful that in June we'll have 3G with some other nice surprises.

I just hope Apple/AT&T is nice to us upgrader's! I wonder how that's going to work? I imagine I'll use my federal welfare stimulus money to pay the early adopter tax and hope for a $100 Apple store rebate at the first price drop the following month. Yeah, I think that's how it's going to work.

i'd expect immediate launch after the announcement coz they would not want to loose out on nearly a month of sales.
anyway after the keynote, the kool-aid would be in full flow.
and after a few days, imagine os 2.0 being so slow to download due to so many people downloading it.

maybe directly t their phones over 3G.
that would be something.
:apple:

For the last time, no there will not be some magic software 3g upgrade.

And yes, Apple can deal with about 4 weeks of depressed sales. And they don't even have to be depressed - if Apple cuts the price of the current 16GB edge phone to $400 and cuts the 8GB edge phone to $300 then we'll see if that spurs some sales.

It could be the other way around (US gets 1M, the rest 2M), being that 3G is way more widespread in Europe and Asia than in the US, thus a 3G iPhone would sell a lot faster on those 2 continents.

Hmmm. I've thought about it more and you might be right. Or we may see a 50/50 split. The consensus was that Apple sold 500,000 phones the first weekend, so 3M phones in the first month, if you give 1.5M to the US, that should last the first month at least (I figure a replacement rate of 50% of existing phones, which is a little over 1M phones in the US, in the first month).

Stimulus Direct Deposits are starting in May. Apple will want to take advantage of this, otherwise the average consumer is going to spend it or apply it to debt.

Stimulus checks will then follow suit into June/July.

I hope the iPhone comes out before WWDC, then like few have mentioned, it will give everyone hands on with the new iPhone to see if their apps work out allright.

apple's selling iphone at a rate of 7-8m/year, 24-25m life-cycle would indicate an expected life-cycle of 3-4 years. yeah right...

If they manage to break seriously into the rest of the world (3G is a part of that) then they could easily ship 7-8m a quarter. The iphone has a lot of potential once the wrinkles are ironed out.

From cens.com:
"The newest version is the third generation of this phone, weighing only 110 to 120 grams vs. first generation cousin`s 158 grams and running on 3G mobile technology. Adopting plastic casing instead of aluminum-magnesium casing largely brings down the gear`s weight and cost by nearly one third. In addition to weight advantage, the latest version is also more energy efficient and externally smarter. LCD screen on the phone measures 2.8 inches diagonally, a downsize from first generation`s 3.5 inches."

What?!!!! Smaller screen?!

First of all, i'm not insane (just because i don't think the same way you do). Second, i've never said that apple isn't going to promote it, i just said that not everyone who is getting the stimulus check is going to spend it on the iPhone. that's all. regarding the 3G coverage, i know that AT&T has 3G coverage (i was a valued customer for 8 years) but you can't compare it with what has been in Europe or asia for nearly a decade.

Can't see them doing that - sounds more like speculation. They wouldn't use plastic either... this is apple - they don't *do* cheap and nasty.

Surely it's the second generation of the iphone not the third, anyway?

I can't wait for the 3G iPhone, but don't they have file something with the FCC first?

It's becoming a consideration.. yes they can get approval and keep it secret for a certain amount of time, but for a june release it's starting to stretch it a bit... I presume a few will go out prior to the release date too (steve will likely have one, and I'm sure they'll have a few reporters on NDA ready for the release).

That sounds more like an iPhone Nano than an iPhone (smaller screen, plastic, etc).

Completely off topic (sort of), but is it true the iPhone cannot see photo and video messages, and you have to go to a browser to view them?

If so, that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, and more importantly, WHY?

...and second, will the 3G allow you to view them on the phone this time?
