What I find funny about all this, is that THE SECOND America got threatened with anything serious from anywhere, iPhones would be unlocked and information shared in milliseconds, and all of you would be behind it.

It's just the scenario right not is not one you feel important enough for this to happen.

Sad but true :(

I think I understand now. The government wants to troll the terrorist to buy and use iPhones thinking they no longer have to worry if their plans are revealed. This is a brilliant move by the FBI if this is true.

I don't think so. Rather then going through all the steps that Snowden have suggested, they want a tool that can make their job much easier and speedier to not just one iPhone but to any single iOS device they want and likely without the need to have the device on their position. There is no way they would be able to spy on all iPhone's (assuming that's what their intention is ) using Snowden's suggestion.

Terrorism have been around for long long time. It's what gov's use to spread fear among people. The world have survived and will survive terror. But living in fear is much much worse. I hope Apple fights this to death and not surrender. Say what you want about Apple but this concern hundreds of millions of users.

[doublepost=1457608767][/doublepost]I think that I read somewhere that Apple are working on a way to make it impossible for anyone, including themselves to access encrypted iPhone information. I wonder how that would affect these governmental demands and laws.

I'd like to ask a totally theoretical question as I'm not sure exactly how an iPhone and Cloud etc work together with photo's and/or what options you have as to where things go and what security you can place things under.

Lets say you had a genuinely terrible person, male or female that was responsible for brutal attacks and sexual assaults on a large amount of young children over many years.

If they had hundreds if not thousands of images of them carrying out these attacks and others images of their young victims.
As things stand now, are they 100% safe using their iPhone that Apple would stand by their right to privacy and the authorities would not in any way be able to gain access to these images to fully bring this person to justice and identify all the victims?

I did say theoretical, however I fear the above scenario, on some scale could exactly be happening today, if an iPhone was legally proven to be a safe haven under any scenario.

So France for all these years was spoiling to impose a police state? And finally got their chance with the ISIS attack? Isn't that not too far from thinking that France planned the ISIS attack?

Thinking in terms of country is too narrow. The system of domination and control supersede or is on a higher level. Higher than continents even.

You need to look for an actor that is dominating the major part of our world. Every country that have a privately owned central bank is part of the network of domination and control.

One reason they hit Gadaffhi, Hussain and others hard.

And someone posts one of the old "what if" scenarios...
So obviously; because actual crimes can't be solved using traditional detective and forensic work anymore; there is a complete dependency on any suspect fully documenting their actions and not using any specific security or encryption measures beyond the basics.
Of course; in such situations, we should fully advocate the use of torture to obtain confessions and information. In medieval times; people got taken to the Tower of London and some were never seen again...

And of course; it is required to post the counter examples:
What if: a country with a religious ruling sect decided to apply the ability to inspect the devices of everyone either resident or visiting, with severe penalties for non-practicing or alternative beliefs? Or lifestyles? Or simply associates?
What if; unofficial use exposes iMessages between guardians and children used to arrange pickup after an activity, and an ill intentioned imposter exploits this?
Or what if anyone can simply access anyone else's devices, and do what they like with any financial, media, storage accounts and information.

One possible application which shouldn't be needed and of dubious benefit vs. so many likely negative abuses of it.

Now we know one reason Apple has accumulated that huge pile of cash: for lawyers to fight this crap.

Phew. Thank goodness they support slave labor and can manage at 80% markup or else their attempt to usurp world governments because Apple is more human rights-friendly than anyone wouldn't get far.

France living up to their cowardly reputation.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Apple just stop selling their devices in France.

Losing customers? No way! How can any company survive for any length of time without customers?

Apart from taxpayers paying for corporate welfare and bailouts.

BTW: How many here wish France was just cowardly in, say, 1776? Would then the problem be solved?

Oh, what if the TPP became law? Supposedly, it allows companies to sue governments if they are perceived to hamper corporations' ability to profit. If there's a better way to become a plutocratic oligarchy instead of a representative democratic republic, do let us know. Especially as, as you start to think about that tinfoil possibility, that's potentially worse than terrorists (who are really the pits when it comes to human rights issues) becoming Apple's latest preferred target market and customer base.

I am seriously considering writing a messaging app that uses multiple layers of strong encryption if this bill passes in France or if the US courts give the FBI their ruling. Instead of using a centralized server, ithe would use direct web sockets between clients. Using multiple layers of different encryption schemes, with some obfuscation thrown in for good measure, would make it essentially impossible to crack the messages.

This way security conscious people can still have the security they want regardless of what these idiotic lawmakers end up doing.
There is one called wickr

What's your opinion of George Soros?

Fear, ignorance, and power politics have created this situation. Encrypted communication for any reason has been around for a long long time.

How much would it take for the worlds richest and corporations to recess the economy of any single country?
The belief that a country controls, is just that; a belief. Far too many country's are perched on a tall and narrow pedestal.

You say that like it's a good thing.

No - the management at Apple accumulated cash outside the US because they dont want to boost their bonuses by avoiding paying corporate tax in the US, although they still want to continue to market their Chinese-made products as "designed in California". This in plain English, is called "freeloading".

re: the French govt, they are basically piece by piece constructing their own equivalent of the so-called PATRIOT Act. More examples here:

And this has to do with fighting to keep their phones safe how? Don't like their margins? Don't buy their products. Just don't conflate your agenda and axe to grind with Apple resisting being compelled to weaken the security of their phones.
