I think this was a controlled leak to get the stock up! Lets keep in mind Apple is a public company. As this Freudian slip(COUGH COUGH) gets around the net Apple's stock will rise a bit.

That would only be beneficial if it was a "pump and dump" situation. Apple isn't that shady, plus it would really interest the SEC. If what you are saying is true, and Apple has nothing the stock gets hammered and hard. OTOH if the Apple does for tablets what it did for phones the stock price is going to skyrocket on the 27th anyway.

That said, I agree this is a controlled leak, but to get people pumped up for the announcement, not to artificially bolster Apple's already hefty stock price.

UH OH!
Looks like France Télécom and Orange wont be getting an Apple Tablet this year!

They wont be getting the table sure but looks like Rich won't be getting that cushy office with private bath and the two penthouse in the heart of Paris either...

"Richard has been WAS tabbed as the next CEO of France Télécom, a position he will NOT assume when current CEO Didier Lombard retires next year. "

TFTFY

$700 Euro for an iPhone?!?! They're THAT expensive over there? Good grief. I paid $199 for mine.

Here in Italy:
- iPhone 3G 8gb ---> 499€ (726$)
- iPhone 3GS 16gb ---> 599€ (871$)
- iPhone 3GS 32gb ---> 699€ (1015$)

Completely unlocked and without any contract or monthly fee.

Of course it is ALSO possible to take it subsized (from 0€ to 199€ depending on the plan). And even subsized is still UNLOCKED.

So unless this guy is full of ****, this confirms what many of us thought: You won't be limited to just wifi. If I were Apple, what would make the most sense?

"We're not going to require that you buy a dedicated service plan, but if you do, we'll subsidize the tablet and it's available on your choice of any network. They are going to pay us X amount of money for the tablet no matter what and we'll let them engage in price wars to compete for your service. That rumored at&t tethering plan that we keep telling you about, well it's finally here. But we've limited the bandwidth on tethering and video streaming/video chat requires a separate plan. Oh and by the way, this thing will only tether with your iPhone so if you don't have one of those, go buy one."

Better be available for t-mobile customers if you need any cell plan at all. I hate not being able to get an iPhone because of dumb-a$$ at&t. (and i don't have the cash for an unlocked one.) ...or to get one that i can unlock.

what an idiot. Loose lips sink le bateau. I hope that Orange only looks like orange because of the egg on their face when Steve puts them at the back of the slate/table/cooldevice queue.

WOW whatever! Comments like this are hilarious. Yes the God of Apple will come down and smite him for his transgression I'm sure.

The stock is already elevated assuming a release. If it isn't released, expect a drop. If it is announced, there may be a small gain, then a correction as speculation of the profits are realized, then either a gain or a drop after the release of the product and it's success or lack thereof.

Pretty much what happened with iPhone.

I bought Apple the day or so before announcement of iPhone. Yeah, it got a 20 percent bump in the days that followed, but then it trickled back down to where it was abouts until the release. After the sales numbers and reviws came in it had a slow steady rise over 5 ot 6 months. It rose to over double. Then, with the market crash it dropped below what I bought it. And within a year it's back up to it's high. Roller coaster. I'll be holding.

I seriously doubt a guy that far up the food chain in a company like Orange would violage the NDA. It's not like there was some advantage to them for leaking anything.

I imagine this is either out of context or a very slim chance that it was intentional.

People in his position don't get where they are by pissing off business partners.

BREAKING NEWS
Orange deny Apple iSlate blunder: VP “taken out of context”

“These responses in no way reflect Orange’s confirmation of the existence of the rumoured device. The spokesperson was merely confirming that he is aware of the speculation surrounding a launch and that Orange would be delighted to have such a product were it ever to be available” Orange statement

Giant fail if it does. Guessing Apple would not do that b/c I think most people are sick of paying for access for every device & it would be a huge turn off. What would make sense is a new affordable "pay per use" or metered plan - say 2GB month for $20. That is where the wireless providers want to go and this would be a great opportunity to get people away from "all you can eat" service.

You said it perfectly.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Yup someones getting their pips squeezed by the Applecor(p)

This is getting ridiculous! One story about a leak and everyone assumes that any info is a leak. This story presented no new info. Apple doesn't use CEOs for a controlled leak. They leak it mostly to the established tech press like the WSJ & NYT.

And no Apple is not doing it to manipulate stock prices or many people would go to jail. The WSJ article was more about Apple relaying info to their investors without officially going on the record.

Ahh, the good old "taken out of context" line.

Hilarious in it's obvious attempt to cover up a mistake, and yet subtle enough to amuse because the context was A GUY ANSWERING QUESTIONS AT A FREAKING INTERVIEW!!!

I think all of you are interpreting what he said veeeery wrong.

What he was asked was "According to Le Point, your partner Apple will launch a Tablet..."

And he said "yes"

But what he meant was "yes", as in "Yes those are the rumours", it is a "yes" that would be equivalent to a "mmhmm" in the US or Canada, he is just agreeing with what the other guy is saying.

He isn't confirming that there is a tablet.

I vaguely remember something an Apple patent where the display was also a sensing array (interspersed pixel grid, or something similar)

Basically, it was a camera CCD overlaid onto a display matrix.

Anyone else have any recollections, or is it just senility setting in?

Nig.

Yup i remember that patent, even with my senility ;). One of the cool things about it is that you can look directly into the eye of the person looking at you because, of course, your looking right at the ccd image of them looking at you while your video is captured. cool huh

I haven't had a chance to read through the 6 pages on this thread, but I can offer some further translation of that interview.

He specifically said: Apple is a partner company to France telecom and a new product will be out in a few days called the Apple Tablet, which orange will be releasing. "We have done everything in France to make sure our networks support this as in America they have had to stop the Iphone because of the (networks) inability to support 3G."

I'm assuming Orange, by releasing that statement saying he was merely accepting that there were rumours, think the entire world outside of France doesn't speak French!! Nowhere in that interview did he say anything about a rumour. He specifically stated a 'new product by apple called the apple tablet' and 'things done in France to make sure the network can support the traffic'

Do you not all realise that France Telecom are about 3 times the size of Apple with positions in all the worlds large markets.

So who is who's bitch?

pretty much what i do NOT want. this pay per use data plans are usually quite unpredictable and expensive when you overrun your limit. especially when there is video capability . i prefer a add on to my ATT account for lets say $20-30 with unlimited data. preferably with some integration of phone services on the tablet.

Excellent analysis; you can't be wrong: it's either going to drop or gain, and then it's going to either gain or drop.
