It's really sad that this is considered "big news" and is simply evidence of how Apple is able to really brain wash people.

First off, tablets have been around for almost a decade.

Secondly, people are considering the presence of a webcam big news? The leakage is going to piss off Jobs?

Folks...how many of us use desktops or laptops with....WEBCAMS. How many of us can video conference anytime we want, either at our desks or on the go? Can we not video conference on our laptops already??

People are reading this and going "Holy ****, live mobile video conferencing!"

Yeah we've been able to do this for years and years on our laptops. Ugh...Apple marketing is insane.

But we need to work ourselves up into a frenzy ready for the inevitable meltdown on the 26th when we find out it doesnt have firewire.

Nice rant, but it misses the point. Apple has always worked their magic when it comes to interfacing with the user. Yeah, video conferencing is old hat for some people but it's not easy. There were mp3 players around for years before the iPod but nobody was doing it except for the hardcore geeks because it took too much effort, too much software installs, too much bother. People don't want a chore. They want a product that does what it does with the touch of as few button as possible. That's where Apple will make a big splash (assuming the video conferencing thing is accurate.) They'll bring it down from geek land into the realm of regular consumers.

Looks like Apple finally responded to all the bogus 'front-facing iChat camera' rumors since 2007.

It is NOT so far-fetched as I've always pictured the tablet as the top-half of a MBA anyway.

So "According to weekly Le Point, in a couple of days Apple will be launching its tablet computer..." to which he says "Yes".

OMG what a confirmation! Le Point actually said that Apple would be launching a tablet.

And "...equipped with a webcam." to which he responds "Yes".

Seriously? Le Point said the iTablet would have a webcam? OMG.

Finally "Are Orange customers going to be able to enjoy it?" to which he responded "Of Course".

What he forgot to say was, "like every other person on the planet who can afford it".
He said absolutly nothing and got a lot of free publicity for Orange. This guy is my hero.

Soon it twil be Jan 27th, and the endless speculation can finally, finally, come to an end.

and the endless bitching over what it is and what it is not, can begin.

Price point is going to be key for this device. Sales will really depend on it.

More than likely see two options: 3G equipped w/ 2 year contract: Subsidized price, & No 3G Unsubsidized.

However, if Apple follows traditional smartphone subsidy patterns, like their own iPhone, we'll see a heft difference in price from one model to the next. Hypothetically, we'd see a $800 tablet, $400 subsidized w/ contract.

But I think these numbers are way off. This is not a must have product for anyone, and to drive sales you have to be aggressive with price. Much as Netbook manufacturers have offer free - $99 deals w/ contracts, I hope we see the very low price of $300 Subsidized w/ 2 year contract and $600 available directly from Apple w/ no contract Wifi only.

Again this product will not sell like the iPhone. Its a very niche market product and if there is any hope on blowing the door wide open with Apple's take on the tablet, the price must be right.

As much as i would love that price-point, id consider it highly unlikely, consider that you will easily have to pay $600/700 dollars for an unsubsidized iphone, id say more along the lines of $899/$999 with no contract and $400/$500 on contract, at best from the get go.

Do you REALLY think for one minute that Apple would NOT sell this product through FT just because of an ambiguous response to a rumor? FT has the most capable data network and infrastructure in the area - Apple will NOT refuse to sell it through anyone because of this supposed 'slip'. I don't think this guy was even talking about the rumored Apple tablet device but the rumor OF a tablet and a tablet device on their much upgraded network.

Apple will not generally cut off their nose to spite their face...

D

agree with the posts that think orange is going to feel some hate from cupertino...i imagine one of two things will happen: he'll hear nothing from cupertino or he'll get a a talking to from cupertino. he'd better hope for the latter, because that means he's still getting the tablet. no contact from steve? say bye bye to your tablet.

Apple PR Machine Fast at Work

I think Apple intentionally used Mr. Richard as an effort get the tablet back into the spotlight of the media after the initial misstep of release the date of a special media event be CES. CES took a lot a thunder away from Apple's announcement. I think this is apples way to get back into the spot light. They did a very similar thing with ATT's CEO a couple of years ago. Top executives, don't make statement errors like this unless its intentional. In my humble opinion, Apple PR machine has commonly used rumor sites for creating hype. However, after the all the mishaps with AppleInsider they are reverting to using Top Executives of their strategic partners to leak information.

Side note: Since I brought it up. The firmly believe the guys at Apple Insider did nothing wrong and were exercising their rights of freedom of the press.

I believe it was right on point actually. Video conferencing isn't easy? What decade is this? Do you use Skype or iChat? Video conferencing is dead simple, and has been for ages. My grandparents do it on their PC. There are no barriers, other than the cost of a webcam, to video conferencing. And if you have a laptop, you generally just do it...so yeah...this is a complete non-event.

The iPod only started taking off when they added Windows support anyway. I really don't think it has anything to do with "Apple magic."

We'll see if this tablet is good, and I may get one if it is, but the way it is being treated by the media is absurd.

I know Apple's "controlled leaks" typically come from published sources, but one wonder if these recent "casual slips" by executives have all been quasi-choreographed by Apple too.

"Hey, Bill, maybe you could do me a solid and slip the phrase 'Apple's impending slate' into a speech sometime in October. Thanks, buddy."

I don't think this confusion from the layman's in here will ever stop!

On a better note, this image was on their page with the video! Best looking mockup I have seen so far I think! :D

I don't think the tablet/slate/whatever will look anything like that. The mockups of the iPhone looked an iPod with a dialer, and look what we got. I think the tablet will be the same.

Best post in the entire thread....

To all the other a$$ hats, how many more times are you going to post "frenchie will die"? Get over it, the first post said it, did we really need 80 more people to rephrase it?

Update: paidContent:UK received word from Orange clarifying that Richard was simply acknowledging the speculation regarding a tablet and the company's wish to support it if it does exist.

Pretty much what I expected. Even people like this are not in position to really know what Apple plans.
