i bought my mbp july 7 and just ordered the ilife '08 upgrade online for 9.95. has anyone else who upgraded have his copy shipped? would i have been better off downloading the trial and buying a serial number?

I just got my mbp this week! I ordered it on July 25, but it didn't ship til the 7th of August. I simply asked many reps at :apple: if I qualify for the ilife update since :apple: didn't bill my account until th 7th.

It took me awhile (+ hour) but after I told the rpes that I had been on the phone for so long, they offered to send me a free version of the software plus free overnight shipping!!! I love :apple:

It would have been cool to get iwork, but hey beggars can't be choosers.

Can you explain how you got the serial number for iWork for 50% off through the Apple store?

ya know you can just punch in your serial # and tell them you ordered it on august 7th and they wont do anything... i just ordered it fer 10 buks! (but i got my mbp on the 2nd)

:)

I did it too, (I received mine on the 6th of Aug after ordering it on the 23rd) but now I just read the terms and conditions and it says you will need to send them a receipt of your Mac purchase, (From what I understand after you receive it) I tried to cancel it worried they may charge me $80 after the promotion ends and I don't send in the receipt, I tried to cancel the order but they don't let you.

From apple:
To receive your iLife ’08 upgrade, you must complete the order form and provide a photocopy of a dated, itemized sales receipt or packing slip indicating the marketing part number(s) of the qualifying system(s) purchased.

For those who ordered the upgrade having bought your computer before aug. 7, what are the implications of this? and it's weird that it says "to receive" the upgrade we need to send in a receipt--it seems like it will ship without the receipt. anyway, i'm a little confused.

o man i did the same thing and it wont let me cancel it now... whatta u think will happen they send it if u don't send the reciept they charge u 80.00 or wht?

They can't do anything about it. If you ordered the product and it already shipped (as mine has I think) the transaction is already completed. Preeeettty sure they can't re-charge you unless you acknowledge the fee or confirm it.

richl--your order status is "shipped"? if so, that's very good news

Yah I ordered last night at about 11PM central time and it already says shipped on the 13th.

* You are chatting with Jennifer S, an Apple Expert

Hi, my name is Jennifer S. Welcome to Apple!
You: Hi
Jennifer S: Hi how may i help you?
You: I bought a MacBook Pro at the end of June and sent it back because of a scratch and got a replacment soon after. Yesterday I filled out that iLife uptodate form for a 10 dollar iLife..
You: It shipped already, is there anything else I need to do?
Jennifer S: Let me check.
Jennifer S: I'm sorry for the wait. I'm still trying to locate that information for you.
Jennifer S: And i've found it. You don't need to do anything else.
Jennifer S: You are all set.
Jennifer S: Anything else i can help you with?
Jennifer S: Would you like to continue the chat?
Jennifer S: This chat will now end

I tried to play the dumb customer role.

So, the 10 dollar upgrade is pretty much working for everyone? I paid 40. Oh well. Better than nothing. If my MBP does end up coming with iLife 08, can I return it directly to the Apple store or do I need to ship it back to them? Anyone know?

Just wanted to let you guys know what just happened when I called Apple. I ordered my SR MBP (1st mac) on July 18th & received last Thursday, August 2nd. It is absolutely flawless & I love it!! Well, when Tuesday rolled around & :apple: released iLife '08 & iWork '08, I was a little disappointed that I had missed out on the new update. So, even after reading all the posts about people saying that :apple: refused to offer free versions to people that ordered right before the release, I decided to call Customer Service to see if I at least could qualify for the iLife '08 Hardware Up-To-Date rebate thing. ( http://www.apple.com/ilife/uptodate/ ) I was connected to a representative (his name was Ernie) & told him how I had just received my MBP a week ago. Before I could even ask about an iLife discount, he tells me that he will ship me a copy free of charge. I was stunned!! I didn't even ask for ANYTHING free. But it gets better...after thanking him..he goes, "I bet you'd be interested in iWork as well right?" I said yes & he adds that onto my order...FREE OF CHARGE! I just can't believe this. It is nice to see that some companies (unlike Best Buy, Dell..just to name a few) appreciate the fact that their customers spend thousands of dollars & are WILLIING to help assist you when something like this occurs. I will definitely send Mr. Jobs an email bragging on Ernie & how he helped me out.

Let me know if any of you other guys (who just recieved your new MBP prior to the iLife & iWork release) have had any luck with :apple: providing the free upgrade...
First congrats!
But wait... Did you buy iWork06 at all with your MB? You know iWork never comes free with the new purchase and what makes this kind offer legit? I mean I can understand they offer a free iLife08 but why also free iWork08 I don't get it.
Can anyone tell me?

I think the CSR was just being generous because the OP had just paid a lot of money to Apple only to get the run-around for a $10 software upgrade. Some CSRs are nicer than others - and to be blunt, it often depends on how big of a tantrum you throw (I know the OP didn't do anything and the offer was given to him - and that is AWESOME - but it often takes raising hell to get that sort of deal - clearly this CSR was a good rep).

As far as returning iLife '08 to an Apple Store -- unless you ordered it separately, the iLife '08 that came with my MacBook (purchased at 4:45 yesterday afternoon) was just not the same as a retail copy (I couldn't register it anyway) -- it was in a gray "Designed By Apple in California" box along with the iWork '08 Trial disc - and the plastic package that included both of those discs was labeled "not for resale" on the back and "iLife '08 CPU Drop in Kit" on the barcode.

Actually, now something that struck me as odd initially makes complete sense. When I opened up my MacBook box, I noticed that the original circular plastic seal had been broken and then retaped over with clear packing tape (I used to work as a sales person/computer tech at a large consumer electronics chain, otherwise I would never notice stuff like that) - everything in the box was factory sealed, so it struck me as odd that the box had been opened. Now I know why: they received the new Drop In Kits at the store (presumably) and replaced them in all the Mac boxes (hence the title "drop in") and then re-sealed the box.

So in short - you cannot return the packaged iLife '08 to a store for anything worth any money.

I feel really lucky that I had to buy my computer yesterday instead of last week (though there is no way in hell I would actually pay $10 for something released a day or two after I bought it - they would give me that for free - I'd be really nice about it, but I would get it for free) - because all of this rebate offer stuff seems kind of shady, especially for consumers who bought the new MB and MBP revisions mid May to present. If the hardware on the shelves is the same, the included software upgrade should be gratis to all of those customers. At least that's the argument that I would make.

I'm interested to find out how this all pans out. I have added it to my cart but haven't pulled the trigger. Please let us know when and what comes with the package. I just did an apple chat and the CSR said to call the apple customer service line.

Just to update you guys...I received my free copies of iLife '08 & iWork '08 this morning. Installed them both & everything works great.

I'm amused that my thread has turned into people talking about how they're using the $10 update without qualifying for it. Definitely not what I was expecting. Haha.

This is sweet...I bought mine on July 27th, I'm going to try this when I get home from work. Is there a problem w/ shipping it? I go back to school at the end of next week...trying to figure out where to ship it. Thanks!

there shouldn't be any problem with shipping, it was only about a dollar anyways. im moving into school on wednesday and am shipping it to my dorm instead of home. im sure if it arrives early your school will still keep it until you arrive.

I got my MB today from Fedex and it came with an iLife '08 "CPU Drop In DVD". I put it in and was able to upgrade to the new iLife.
