Does anyone else apart from me thing that the iLife 08 update should be free to anyone who has iLife 06? I think it should b/c iLife comes on all macs and its like they are trying constantly to get people to buy a new mac, etc. I know they are a business and need to make money but. . .y'know.

No....that would mean 10.4 owners should get 10.5 free, and 10.3 should have gotten 10.4 free. And iLife '05 owners should have gotten iLife '06 free.

That doesn't make Apple more money, and is a bad move for Apple.

yer but no but yer but. An OS is different. that costs money in the first place. iLife comes free on all Macs doesn't it? I dunno. Maybe I just want it that badly that I'm trying to find a reason why I should get it free. :) Ignore me.

I agree, it should not be free. I mean its only 80 buks, not really an high price for what you get. And giving it for free would mean that Apple would lose money looking at the developers cost.

My MacBook Pro just came in yesterday (I ordered it at the end of July) and it came with iLife '08 pre-installed! I was expecting iLife '06, so it was a nice surprise.

How do I check the version? Brand new MBP

I see talk of what 'week' a MBP is - can someone tell me how to check?

I walked into the Ginza Mac store, bought a MBP, and it seems to have an old version if iLife. I am a Mac NOOB, but they showed me the publish to Web Gallery in iPhoto while they were 'pitching' the MBP. I am now home, and my iPhoto says version 6. I don't really understand iLife - where is it? Or is it simply iPhoto etc.. ?

Your "week" is ascertained from your serial number. You can find this either on the box your mbp came in, or go to
Apple->about this mac->more info

Your serial number will be w87XX..... where the xx will be your week number. For example, mine is a week 22 so it says w8722......

Since you just bought your MBP, you are eligible for the upgrade version of iLife. The link appears earlier. Alternatively, you could go back to the store and try to politely haggle your way into getting a free copy. But yea, it's only $10
Hope that answered your question

Sure did - thanks! The MBP I just bought is a week 27. I sent an email to the person that helped me at the Mac store - I will wait to see what she says.

Really appreciate your fast and concise response. :D

Just an FYI....

Received my 2.16 MBP refurb yesterday -- it did not come with iLife '08. Then again, it wasn't listed in the specs either, so no real surprise. I did notice that the SR refurb's list iLife '08 to be pre-installed. Will update with my experience trying to get the $10 upgrade.

I got a call back from the Mac store telling me that the '08 version shipped on discs inside the box. I simply ran the upgrade on these discs and I am all set with '08. Maybe your box has discs as well? My MBP had '06 installed, but she said all macs ship with the upgrade kit (if they don't already have '08 preinstalled). Not that $10 is worth much trouble - but I hadn't noticed the discs...

Interesting, thanks for that tip. You're saying it was a separate iLife upgrade disc or somehow included on the 'system install/restore' discs? All I had in my refurb box was 2 grey discs that I didn't really pay much attention to but thought they just said something like system restore. Thanks!

I was eligible for this upgrade; I went to the link and entered my information and it was all ready to ship it to me -- but I was in the process of moving, so I held off until I settled in at my new address.

Now the link to upgrade brings me to a "page not found" page -- have I missed out on my chance to upgrade to iLife '08? I'd be quite saddened, were that the case.

Is this upgrade thing over? Crap I didn't jump on this early enough. Anywy I can still get the upgrade for 10 bucks anyone know?

I hope

I hope they do something like this again for ilife 09. I know I just purchased a mac a couple weeks ago, and now this thing is updated. It would be really nice if there was a 30 day delay or something.

saw it

I saw that link before, but couldn't believe that they would make the cutoff TODAY. I think they'll do something for the hoards of people who might have received a unit over the holidays.

They've released iLife and iWork updates at the expo traditionally. The cutoff has always been release day. There's no reason for them to hand out free software.
