Hey guys, I figured out why none of the command line references were working. Apparently, I should've known something was up when -orbradar and -fps weren't working, but now I've got it figured out...

Apparently, you have to enter the references ALL IN THE FIRST LINE, like so:

-spec -glow -orbradar -fps

Instead of listing them, otherwise FS2 will only read the first line of the list. I finally figured this out after placing -glow at the top of the list, and then trying -shine, a nonexistent ref at the top slot. The game wouldn't let me start, but when I moved -shine to the 2nd slot, the game started. I figured that the game didn't read anything after the first line from that. Now I have to play around with the settings to see if I can get good results. Triangular sections of ships are still lit up in an ugly manner, but maybe it's a 3d engine thing? I dunno.

Hi again
Transcend mod runs well, but i have problem with Derelict mode. I put
DerelictSCP.vpm, Derelict.bmp and mod.ini to main folder next to the application FS2_Open. Then i put Voicepacks (DerelictSCP1(-4).vp-) in the same location. i run FS2 an selected Derelict campaign, there was load screen with special background picture. but after load screen there was nothing. only black Screen  Where is the Problem ?

one more time - sorry about my English :)

I need some in-game help

in one of the pre-missions, the Instructor tells me to press C for communication list and then to select the 4th option on the appearing list. I tried everything. by simply pressing 4; by using the up/down buttons, alt, shift, F-keys, everything ! none worked.

how can I select that 4 in the Communication menu ?

thanks in advance

After pressing C to bring down the comm menu (should show up with a list of options on the top right of your HUD), you just press 4. If you're using your number pad, make sure num lock is on. If not, the numbers above the keyboard should work just fine.

If none of this works, I'd hit F1 or F2 and check your key configs...

I forgot something important: my keyboard is french (or at least configured as french). I hrard that other players had the same problem.

4 on numpad is already used as "go left", but even when it's not taken, it won't react.
number 4 above the keyboard is this symbol:
Code:
 '
and the game seems to make a difference between
Code:
 4
and
Code:
 SHIFT + '
. even whith the appropriate keyboard config with the SHIFTLOCK on. F-keys: idem.
the game just does not want to hear no "4" from me.

any other ideas?

New to this, but loving it

Hi all,

I've only just stumbled across the goodness that is Freespace 2, and so far I love it. I adjusted the res to the 1024 option, and 32 bit graphics, then I downloaded the core, textures, music, models, effects, and adveffects from http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php?list.2 and I activated the following in the newly created config file as instructed:

-spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -rlm -orbradar -ballistic_gauge -warp_flash -targetinfo -snd_preload -env -dualscanlines -fov 0.39 -ambient_factor 75

Also, I have the 3.6.7 SCP application, but does that mean I need to download the 3.6.7 patches from the above site as well? I have a problem with the lighting on some of the ships - best illustrated in the Ship/Weapon info room. When some ships rotate, the lighting doesn't smoothly cross their surfaces, but jerkily appears on different elements. It doesn't happen on all the ships - some of them are lit beautifully.

Cheers!
Owen

EDIT: I've downloaded the 3.6.8 delta mvps and the updated build from above, and turned off a few of my above configs (such as rlm, pcx32, orbradar, dualscanlines) and added -mipmap -missile_lighting and -3dwarp and it looks good but with everything ramped up full within the game options there were a few pauses, including a massive stutter when the Belisarius blew up early in the game. Might turn a few things down.

Firstly, thanks and much kudos to Soulstorm and mtr and everyone else involved in bringing the best space game to the Mac -- it's something I've been patiently awaiting for a decade! When my DSL gets activated, I shall download it and see if I can make sense of the instructions ;)

(I just hope I can find a place that can let me do it without torrenting, my ISP blocks and prohibits BT)

I'm a big science fiction nut, I love my space dramas, and I've tried pretty much every space sim ever released. I bought an Atari 400 just to play Last Starfighter, borrowed a C64 to play Elite, and the only reason why I bought a Windows machine was because of Freespace. I only bought an original Playstation to play Colony Wars: Red Sun (the closest you'll find to Freespace on any console). I've tried Terminus, I've tried all of the Star Wars TIE titles. Escape Velocity, Freelancer, X:2 ... I've tried them all, and Freespace (1 & 2) are still the best games in the genre, bar none.

In the interim, I've pulled my original Freespace 2 CDs out and re-installed it, and I'll have me some Shivan-blasting fun tonight, I'm thinking!

One question, for people who've played the PC version a lot: how can I stop FS2 from insisting that it wants a CD to play a movie? I've tried putting the .MVE files just about everywhere and it still wants the damn disc! Any suggestions?

(And no, using a virtual disc manager like DaemonTools is not an option.)

For the retail version, you can't. The source releases remove that requirement though. There might be a crack or something to allow it to run without the CDs but I don't ever remember seeing one before.

I wasn't involved in bringing the OS X port. I just created this thread and gave help to the people who needed it at the start, since the installation procedures at the biginning were pretty annoying. I really liked the game, and I was really p***ed off that OS X didn't have any good space simulator, so when I laid my hands on the first betas (much before this thread was created) I was so happy that at the end I figured that everyone whould want to know about the port to OS X. Indeed, they wanted to (look at the post and view count in this thread - bigger than any thread in the games forum)

The initial port to OS X was done by a guy named tigital (which had done the endian byteswapping, networking) and mtr (more networking, sound), and their code was based on the icculus.org code for the Linux port, if I remember correctly.

After the initial release of a freespace 2 port into OS X (nothing to do with FS2_Open), tigital had to stop getting involved with the project (although later he/she released another improved port which was more like it was trying to be identical to the original retail PC version of the game and not enhance anything), and mtr moved more into bringing the FS2_Open project into the OS X. I don't know how much tigital has been involved with the FS2_Open port.

Since I have lost all of my FS2 files in my HD format, I am waiting for a new stable beta to come out, so that I can redownload the additional enhancement packs and play some FS2 again... :)

Speaking of which:

http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/nightly/20060513-OSX.dmg

Has the usual performance and memory improvements plus numerous fixed bugs. Also it now has the MVE player by default. And last but not least, environment mapping support. The envmap support requires that your card support GL_EXT_framebuffer_object to generate the textures but other than that you just need to add "-env" to ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline_fso.cfg to enable it. You can also add the "-alpha_env" option which will modulate the envmap against the alpha of the specular map.

Report any bugs, and... whatever else I usually say. :)

Heh. It may be time to take out my downloaded PC disks, attempt an installation and then download the packs... I am extremely anxious to see the progress. It's been since the official 3.6.7 release that I played FS2... :(

Ive been playing some freespace 2 recently and I was wondering is it all mission based or can you freely explore the universe later on in the game?

It's all mission based. Not totally scipted, but you are basically there to achieve the goals of the particular mission. Some mods/campaigns have designed their missions specfically to give a bit more freedom though. We also have some new code features coming up which will give the mission designers a lot more options when it comes to having large, extended missions.

It's mission based, but you can complete missions in many different ways so that you can follow a different path to the ending. There are only 2 endings though (one similar to the other).

Problem in training.

In the basic training the instructor tells me to "toggle bouble fire mode" pressing shift - /

I cant get it to work on my iMac. I`m stuck here... any tips, is it a bug?

Screenshot seems something malfunction in this version (blued color).
What's wrong?
Not sure. But, it may be fixed since an issue that affected Windows users put me on to a coding mistake I made in the screenshot saving code. I'll update the build tomorrow and you can find that out for yourself though.

3.6.9 (we're skipping 3.6.8) will be released the weekend of the 17th, so we are in final bug-fix mode for that. I'm going to do one build this weekend and one build next weekend which will be release candidates. Be sure to make any problems with those builds known since any bugs that get through will be in the final build. :)

Freespace and Integrated Graphics

I've scoured the thread hoping to find some info on how well it runs with the integrated graphics on the new minis and MB's, but I came up empty. Has anyone tried this yet? Is this one of the things that I will regret if I go ahead and purchase a MB? I've run it on my PowerPC mini and it does okay. How does it compare with the integrated graphics machines?

It should run fine, I play it on my 16MB rage pro on medium detail.

Yay! I will redownload the mv packs when this release is out. Time to play fs2 again!

Joystick calibration

I have a Logitech WingMan Attack 2 joystick. Unfortunately no calibration drivers are available on Mac from Logitech. The joystick works fine (all buttons and the throttle axis) but is way out of calibration.

I seem to recall the Windows version of Freespace had some kind of calibration utility that came with the graphics configuration program. (Or maybe it was the built in windows calibration, hm.)

Anyone know if there is a config file somewhere that I can fiddle with the calibration values? I have a program to read the raw joystick values.

Any help is appreciated, I'm still pretty new to the Mac environment.

I'm using a french keyboard and had the same problem as Skalb and Pear01 in Freespace2.
I was looking for a solution when I saw their message in this forum.
Nobody gave any solution. I've found it by myself : just turn your keyboard into US by using the menu (french flag -> US flag) and then launch FS2 and enjoy the game fully.

OSX and windows XP networking

Hi

I have searched the forum and found nothing regarding this. Does freespace2 on OSX network with a windows box? I have tried it but can't see the PC. And if the PC has a game up I can't see it on my Mac. Any fix for this?

I'm running FS_Open 3.6.7 and the PC is running freespace2 ver 1.20.

thanks!
