it's like having a whole new device. You get so used to the crappy 2.0.2 that once you upgrade to 2.1 it's such a breath of fresh air. I don't even care about the lack of new features because this is nice.

By the way, I typed this on 2.1. No lag.

So are you using the iPod touch 2.1 on the iPhone? Otherwise I don't understand.

I said the words "two point one" to a friend the other day, and my phone literally came to life and starting walking around the house.

It's hard to get too excited for an update that is probably going to be nothing more that bug fixes for the most part.

I really think that if push notification or copy/paste or any other new features were coming, Steve would have showed demoes and 'bragged' a bit about the cool new features that were coming. I know that tuesday was an Ipod event, but I still believe that he would have mentioned it.

Well, I know the update at this point only makes the iPhone what it should have been from the start...but just the fact that people went through all that, just makes it exciting. It's like if a teacher graded someone's essay test incorrectly and they should have gotten an A when they got a C...the teacher looks at it again and says they will change the grade. Even though it should have been an A all along, it just makes you excited :).

I seriously would like to know how an OS update is going to accomplish that.

There are meant ways it can accomplish that. It's most likely power management given the sophistication of Apple's programmers...but just an example would be: you don't dismiss a view completely so it's still taking up memory and power even though the user is already done with that screen.

My iPhone was in the same room when I watched Steve Jobs announce 2.1. The iPhone definitely seems zippier now with less lag.

Even the iPhones are getting excited.

No, I have an iPod touch and an iPhone. I am running 2.0.2 on my iPhone and 2.1 on my iPod touch. I kind of enjoy testing stuff on my iPod touch before trying it on my iPhone... I did the same thing with the jailbreak.

Oh OK, I understand. I misunderstood, I thought you were already using 2.1 on your iPhone.

People need to let the "copy/paste" thing go. If 2.1 had it, the folks that updated their touch would be raving about it by now. It ain't happening, thats what methinks.

what I want is so simple it is absurd it isn't already implimented:

Open even a single page in safari and mnimize the browser.
Open ANYTHING ELSE then try and go back to the page... The page RELOADS every time.

This also happens when you have multiple webpagrs open and don't go back to a particular page for a bit.

I am not a programmer but i am a thinker. Why not partition off some memory for just safari. This way when I am forced to use edge or a poor 3g connection I don't have to load all the crap over again!

My guess is, it goes from being pathetic to slightly less pathetic, if that.

And I too am kind of bummed that there are no new features.

But then again, it isn't shocking at all.

I mean, if they release all these new features now, how are they going to have an iPhone 3.0 next July? ;)

I guess you've never owned a laptop and use the power saving features when running on the battery.

NEVER! Unfortunately, the iPhone will get copy/paste 10 minutes after Stevie H Tap-Dancing Jobs needs it and not a second earlier. It will also be called something that lets him patent it and claim it was all his idea, not copy/paste.

i can't wait for 2.1. gonna suck downloading it but oh wellz. lack of PUSH? it'll come just have to wait a little longer (unless it slips in by tomorrow) but stability/security should always be first.

yes this 2.1 should have been back when the phone first came out. but they didn't discover any of these bugs till a million people started using it and the apps.

BS!
I don't see any difference with 2.1 in touch...same as before...
Plus it screwd up mobile me push...
Now I am getting mails about 5-10mins late
iphone (2.02) still gets mails instantly ...

Don't hold your breath people, a new set of problems will come up with 2.1..
you can count on that...

i read somewhere that there is a bug where after you update to 2.1 synching either wont work or it screws up, obviously this happened to the person using a touch but nonetheless.

Gotta love bug fixes that are bugged

the os can fix the battery and make it perform better because apparently the OS at the moment is hogging it some how and now it looks like they've found the fix. I'm guessing it was just the apps and such but we'll see come tomorrow ;D

Has anyone been experiencing even worse symptoms the closer we are getting to 2.1? My iphone has been just the worst today, the worse lag and just freezing like crazy.

Boy do I feel dumb.

I actually have five lap tops in my house so you would think I would not have asked that question.

But, in my defense, I wasn't under the assumption that NO performance increases could be done. I was just surprised to read the word significant is all I guess.

Oh well, I can't wait till tomorrow to find out either way.

Hmm

More to the point, when will they actually unlock and jailbreak 2.1. I have a fist gen and a second gen iphone and I want to be able to use different SIM cards when I am overseas.

I also want stability. And a new macbook. And... Ok. Enough. You get the point. iWant

Yep. He will unveil a revolutionary new feature called Tapshot (TM), which allows you to take snapshots of text and retrieve them by triple-tapping on the screen.

I really hope this update doesn't disappoint. I dont have an iPhone but i am an Apple fan and it would be a hug blow if 2.1 was a dud.

Well, according to the iPod touch users, the 2.1 firmware for them is really nice, fixing lags, application installs, and backups.

So at the worst, SMS would still lag, still have dropped calls, reception still bad, etc. since that's the phone part.
