Good question. Until the pre-order page opens up or Apple or a carrier says something, I don't think we'll know. I'd recommend being prepared for either outcome.
When doing an upgrade on AT&T, the new phone typically comes with a new SIM appropriate for the device. When you activate your old SIM is deactivated. I didn't see your previous posts, so if this wasn't your question I'm sorry.
My wife's iPhone 4 is on a family plan with her parents and brother. I will be purchasing my 4S and adding it to their plan on Verizon.
I would assume that since its an addition to the family plan it probably HAS to be ordered via the Verizon site - and logged in via their account. Is that accurate?

I live in a small city that is made up mostly of college students. I talked to the local Verizon store about a month ago and asked about the release of the iphone 4. They told me they have no way of predicting how many phones they will get but that for the iphone 4 release they had a line of about 15 people upon opening. Do you think I will be okay if I don't preorder and just show up next friday morning to buy it?
I stopped into my local AT&T store yesterday. The girl told me that I can come to the store and place my pre-order (if I'm concerned about the online system crashing from overload). However, the phone has to be mailed to my house, I can't pick it up at the store like I did for my 3GS. Disappointed with that, as my 3GS process was super smooth - flawless. She said to check the AT&T site periodically today to find out if stores will be opening early to assist with pre-orders. I think I'll try the online way and hope it works. Now I'm nervous. I've been with my 3GS long enough - I'm ready to move to the 4 series!
I heard in the past that there was a problem if you tried to mail the phone to a different address than your billing address. I'm at college right now, so has anybody been able to get around this?
Well, according to Sprint's press release, the 4S will be available for preorder on their website on 10/7 12:01a PT. Anyone know when the preorders will begin on Apple.com?

i too am wondering how busy the local apple stores are going to be on friday to be able to pick up the phone. I'd really not want to take the day off to get this done, but i'll need the phone since i havent had one in a week, AND im going to a wedding this weekend (freakin a).
Any advice on what to do for an apple store pick up in nyc on the morning of the 14th?

What is the actual name of the "The Apple store app on the iphone."? I can't find it....
If I am on a family plan through at&t and I am planing on using my family members upgrade, will all I have to do is switch the sims when the phone gets here and call at&t and have them switch the numbers? First time pre orderer so I always had it taken care of when I went to the store to buy it.

Yeah you can buy AppleCare+ from the Verizon website. Verizon also has their own insurance which I'm not completely sure if you need but it's not that much.

I will be trying to order 2, 64 Gb Verizon ones, 1 ea. of white & black for me & my Bride (married 30 years). We have been using our AudioVox 9155 GPX's now for ~10 years or so & are ready to double our Family Plan phone bill to get iPhone 4S's. These have all of the features (except 4G) that I was waiting for the iPhone 5 for. They will compliment our Verizon iPad 2's just fine.

switching from at&t to verizon
Does anyone know if I can pre-order tonight (3 AM EST) when I have an AT&T iPhone 4 and I want to switch to the Verizon iPhone 4S? I'm going to want to carry over my telephone number and doing so will be breaking my AT&T contract early, which comes with a penalty. Does the pre-order system take this into account or is it more geared towards helping customers upgrade without switching carriers? Does anyone remember how it was when switching from AT&T to Verizon when the Verizon iPhone 4 came out? Thanks!
