The 6.1 could be the sweet spot for a lot of customers. I own a 8+ now but I'd gladly go back to something smaller and the 6.1 may be the right model for me. I'm not sure I'm willing to renounce to the second camera and to 3D touch, so I might as well go for the 5.8 model.
agree, I like the 6.1, I have the current iPhone X and think the largest one of 6.5 would be too big in the hand. Give me the 6.1 with all the bells and whistles please

Am I wrong in thinking that the bezels on the new 5.8 model look thinner than the bezels on current iPhone X?

It might just be an illusion, but If I look at my iPhone X, bezels on it look more like the bezels on the new 6.1 model shown here.

The smaller the better! It’s a phone! 110% of the reason I bought the iPhoneX was it being the “smallest” new iPhone I could get. The ip4 was and remains the best size ever for one handed usage and pocket real-estate.

For sure..

I'm old enough to remember when "physically small tech" was all the hotness and we all marveled at how amazing it was they could cram cool things into small spaces.

I sure would love Apple to do that on one of their models again.

(yes - it's amazing what they cram into all the phones - totally get that - but I would like to see just one model that's even close to the 4" phone physical size again)

Apple has conditioned people to equate screen size to premium features. For the last 3 years there have been 3 screen sizes where the smallest screen has less features, the middle sized is full featured and the larger size is full features + better camera (e.g. iPhone SE - lower quality selfie cam, TouchID v1, no 3D touch, iPhone 6s - full featured, iPhone 6s+ - full featured + camera with OIS; iPhone SE - as above + older CPU/GPU, iPhone 7 - full featured, iPhone 7+ - full featured + dual camera etc).

I think rather than 'why is the middle-sized screen the low end phone?', the question should be 'why isn't the iPhone X successor 6.1" as well?'

notch = no sale

I'll get an 8 and that will be my last iPhone

Having used the X for a year now, I find that a weird position. FaceID is actually more convenient than TouchID. Though TouchID was great as well. The notch doesn't impact anything as the screen is plenty big enough.

Part of me wonders if they are even going to do a SE2. Taking the iphone 8 and tweaking it to be the "iphone classic" seems more likely at this point.

If you're an iOS App Developer ... I think this may be the first time AAPL keeps it simple for us, & uses the same Points (i.e., 375 x 812), 3x Points-to-Pixels factor, & (then obviously) Screen Resolution (i.e., 1125 x 2436), for ALL three upcoming iPhones ... & simply adjusts the PPI / "pixel pitch" for each new iPhone:

* 5.8" OLED w/ 458 PPI
(vs 401 PPI for the 7+ & 8+, OR 326 PPI for the 4.7" iPhones)

* 6.1" LCD w/ xxx PPI (less than 458 PPI)

* 6.5" OLED w/ yyy PPI (less than the 6.1" LCD's PPI)

Apps would simply be using the Platform String to determine which device they are currently running on.

My reasoning is simple:

1.) starting in August, new App Submittals to AAPL App Review MUST include support for the current 5.8" iPhone X,

2.) AAPL is NOT going to go thru the same App Rampup "Delay" with their newer iPhones !

"pixel pitch" will (once again) become a key spec knowledgeable Buyers use to help them make their Buy Decision.

For those who don't know, currently, the 7+, 8+, & X ALL use the 3x points-to-pixels factor, which is @ the core of developing an app's UI ... the 7+ & 8+ use an additional Downsampling phase, so they are NOT true 3x scales.

NOT Rocket Science, but I'm UN-aware of anyone who has mentioned this so-far, anywhere !

History shows it wasn’t a mistake. People complained before that the base model was too big. Apple sales shot through the roof despite the complaints. Eventually they release the SE to accommodate the complainers. But it turns out that while vocal and loud, the actual number of people who demand a smaller phone is very small compared to those who,buy the bigger phones.

It’s not a mistake.

Where is your data for people preferring a smaller form factor?

And remember, iPhone X has a 5.8 inch screen and is the size of an iPhone 8.

Seems like it was about a third the number of iPhone 6s and 6s Plus units and helped give them a bump the quarter it was released. Sales have likely slowed because Apple hasn't been updating the thing. https://techcrunch.com/2016/08/10/t...-just-as-apple-planned-in-the-u-s-and-europe/

I still don't understand how a "budget" iPhone will be larger in screen size than the (smaller) high end iPhone
This is the same logic that doesn't allow us to have a high-end, SE-sized phone. The size/price/features correlation should be scrapped. I have tiny Trump hands and I want a modern phone I can get a grip on, damnit.

Will see. Apple does a good job at making sure higher end products don’t get cannibalized.

True, but it's already understood why the "budget" model will be the budget model (LCD screen, no 3D touch, probably Face ID v1). I don't remember a time that they released multiple new iPhone's with different processors. I could be wrong though.

iPhone SE always represented a small amount of sales, even in 2016. Today, the demand for SE is even smaller as consumer preferences have shifted to larger displays.

The current demand for SE comes from emerging markets like India and South Africa where consumers have yet to purchase their first smartphone. The rest of the world has moved on to 6" displays.

Daydreaming dreamers dream dreams.

1) All these daydreams of an LCD iPhone that looks like the OLED iPhone. Not happening. The bezels would have to be much bigger than that, and it may be thicker.

2) Why all these rumors of 5.8/6.1/6.5 iPhones? I'm going to laugh my head off at all you people when Apple does something entirely different than this.

Exactly. It is much more likely with a spec-bumped iPhone X and one bigger model. Add price drop of 150-200 across the old line and that's it.
