Apple would not release a new computer so close to thier financial statement. The money is focused on what the 3rd quarter numbers look like.

If anything is to happen with updates, I would suspect next week sometime. If not, then probably nothing until MacWorld.

However, I still suspect an iPod announcement in Nov. to conteract the Zune release.

Next week is looking very likely. At CompUSA, there are absolutely no MacBook Pros and no orders to get any in, which usually means that a revision is imminent. Also Apple is beginning their new financial quarter and the red iPod Nanos has had their 15 minutes of fame on the homepage.

When are people going to figure out that this has nothing to do with the updates? As secretive as Apple is about this kind of thing, I am sure that CompUSA doesn't know when they are coming out either.

CompUSA has no idea when they are coming out. But it is definitely a clue when one of the largest resellers of Apple products and more importantly the MacBook Pros hasn't had any shipments in a month.

I've just visited the Educational Institution Apple Store and saw that the waiting time for MBP went from 2-3 weeks to 1-2 weeks and this covers exactly the week from the 24 to the 31, which is the most favourite at the moment for C2D release.

This can be a good sign...

Same here, the University Bookstore quoted wait times of 2-3 weeks and they strongly advised against buying one now. This is getting exciting.

This is nothing new, it has said 2-3 weeks in the institution store for at least a couple of weeks now. Educational purchases for individuals is still showing 3 days or less on MBPs.

Let me pose this question...

As a switcher, who is interested in just the macbook, would it be better to buy now, with a $120 discount, or wait for the C2D to come out. Are there hardware upgrades coming or is the only differnce a #2. Will the macbooks now be able to run Leoperd EFFICIENTLY? Can Jobs throw me a bone here?

Of course it will, the MacBook is sweet and has less problems than the Pro; and there is a chance that it won't be updated until later anyways.

Get the MB, and feel happy not to be a part of this conversation/intervention.;)

I know but now it has decreased: from 2-3 to 1-2. And so something's happening...

Yeah, but it could be anything. It could be that more of the current non-C2D MBPs have been made to raise stock levels. :(

Obviously, you're right. But it could even be something different...

Naaaaah...don't get your hopes high on that!

When Apple chooses to release a C2D MBP...I haven't the first clue. Whether or not they're even in production yet, I can't say..though I feel certain it has to be the case.

But to think that they are continuing to produce the CD MBP seems an incredibly ludicrous leap to me (even for Apple)...

How do they keep it quiet?

What I want to know is...how in the world do they (Apple) keep such a tight lid on everything? Does a person have to have a top-secret security clearance to work for them...do they have the KGB working for them on the side? Our (US) government isn't even shut up this tight.

Someone reported a week 41 MBP. Isn't week 41 just last week?

That would depend on whether they start the count for # of weeks at the beginning of their fiscal year (which starts in October), or the calendar year. Which it is, I don't know.

I don't remember reading someone mentioning a week 41 build, but I could have missed it too.

However, I wouldn't expect them to completely shut down the CD assembly lines until they had the C2D updates shipping out. If for nothing more than "just in case" something happened. Cut production considerably? Of course, but not completely. They can always sell what's left somewhere.

maybe that is the build week?

i think they will go on sale on 24th or 31st, i cant see it being any later.

but if built in week 41, could go on sale 24th, early built ones goto stores then online & phone orders get them shipped from china as they are built

You lost me on that one. Are you talking CD MBPs or C2D?

I'm certain week 1 is the first week of the calendar year. When the MBP was released on the 11th January, and shipped in February, the people who got them first (me included) had week 8 builds. If week 1 had been in October the very first MBPs would have been week 20-something. So we can be positive week 1 machines are built in the first week in January, and that week 41 was indeed last week.

Will heat still be a problem in Merom MBPs?

this is from the latest PC Magazine. (reviews of merom laptops)

"Still, we were alternately intrigued and dismayed by the issues we found with heat and battery life in some of the c2d laptops. In one of the high-end gaming laptops, the temperature in the system's base hit 114-degrees (45.5 Celsius). The highest temperature we encountered was a whopping 120 degrees. (48.9 Celsius).

Battery Life in the high-end laptops averaged a dissapointing 2.5 hours. The most meager battery score we saw among all six was 1 hour 52 minutes, while the best was 8 hours 9 minutes - the most impressive we've seen on any laptop (Dell Inspiron E1405)."

I still think MBPs will be released next week (Oct 24), redesigned. (keeping my fingers crossed)

Edits:
the dell E1405 - had a 14" display and 1.6 C2D. thats why it had a really long battery life.
