Salt in the wound

Coming back here everyday to see what's happening has been driving me mad, so I decided to stop the intensity of it for a few days. Those few days have were filled by making the matter more frustrating... how's that? I hear you ask...

Only that fact that there are now adverts on the TV for the latest Core 2 Duo in PCs at PC World {UK}. Seeing Dells in the newspapers is one thing, but seeing C2D on TV kinda rubs salt into my waiting injury :( . I hope this waiting till the elusive holiday period for our MBPs with C2D is worth it.

lol I feel your pain - coupled with TV ads for the new nano's on the same channel, Core2Duo ads are just too much. I think they're taunting us :D

It's no secret that Apple doesn't cut prices on computers unless they have released a new version themselves. Maddening though it may be for some, Apple's strategy is all about lowering the barriers to switching, while conditioning its current and future customers not to treat its products like commodities.

No offense, but I don't see any logic whatsoever in this statement. How is refusing to lower prices "lowering the barrier to switching?" Why wouldn't Apple customers treat Apple products like commodities - that's exactly what they are!

Just to add some fuel to the discussion fire:

Availability of 2.16 15.4" MBP is up to 3 days in the german online store...

Honi soit qui mal y pense!

what angers me about the mmbp or lack there of is that apple gives no hints as to when they are going to be released. If the had said back in august that they will be upgraded at the end of october to end of november i would have purchased a laptop on that day, but becuase i had no knowledge i kept convincing myself every monday night that it would be coming out the proceeding tuesday. Plus all of the events in september and the end of the free ipod made me think for sure that it was coming out then but i was sadly mistaken. Now i am in the same boat that i was back in august thinking that it will come out within the next 2 weeks and not purchasing it for the prior reason. Now half of the semester is over and i have been struggling without a laptop. Apple this is one place where you should take your cues from dell:eek: and anounce a product way in advance so you consumer i.e students who need it can make an informed decision.

I totally agree with you on how frustrating it is to be in the dark about Apple's strategy for releasing new laptops; especially if you're thinking of dishing out $2500, you want to make sure it's for the best deal and newest tech possible. But from Apple's standpoint, it makes business sense to keep mum on new releases; if they make an announcement saying 'our new laptops will be released in 2 months,' how much harder will it be to sell existing stock, especially if PC makers decide to play that fact up in their adverts? It may not be 'nice' to shortchange your average Joe who's buying his first ever Mac, but he probably won't notice the difference. No news is good news if you don't want to advertise the fact that you're behind the other PC makers in getting the latest chip in your laptops. And let's face it; there may be a lot of grumbling from the informed individual about the wait time, but you know you're still gonna buy the machine when it finally comes out

Well, if you check best buy's website they only have the 13" black Macbook listed. I mentioned earlier in this thread that they only had the 15" Pro but the next week practically the full line was back on the site. I think they're watching....shhh! All sillyness aside, you can order any one of their desktops and even select "in store pick-up" on any of them (doesn't mean the stores in your area have them though). But the 13" black book is online only order. ALSO, I checked stock on them last night and they were supposed to go out of stock in August. Which tells me they are preparing for the next model. Also tried to order one of their laptops through the store and I can't touch them. Can only get them through the website.

Also, if you check the best buy website you will see that they still have no availability on the c2d mp/p systems.

Yeah, but the local stores are full of them... At least around here and in several other areas according to a number of other people on the forums. Don't start imagining artificial shortages, there is no shortage, even on higher-speed chips. Intel and the major hardware sites will announce a shortage, so far none have.

Um. I think he was making a point. I may be wrong but I was guessing that he meant to say that they had no C2D MB/Ps.

Bah stupid lenovo keyboard. It couldn't possibly be my fault for not being able to type.

Yes, I was trying to make the stupid mb and mbp joke about no c2d systems.

Apple would not release a new computer so close to thier financial statement. The money is focused on what the 3rd quarter numbers look like.

If anything is to happen with updates, I would suspect next week sometime. If not, then probably nothing until MacWorld.

However, I still suspect an iPod announcement in Nov. to conteract the Zune release.

It's actually about Apple's Q4 numbers, which just ended most recently.

Next two weeks are looking like the best options for the MacBoo/k Pro ;)

You misunderstand. Apple doesn't lower its prices until there is a direct product line replacement.

Lowering the barriers to switching involved switching to Intel, Boot Camp / Parallels, re-engaging retail partners like Best Buy, etc. Certainly, one can argue that Apple's strategy is difficult to sustain but their market share gains suggest that something is working. If for no other reason than these offered by Robert Scoble: "And, even if that never happens, Microsoft (and me) can learn a thing or two by going into an Apple store. Aesthetics matter. Enabling scenarios (music, photos, and video) matters. Design matters. Service matters. Presentation matters. Culture matters. Community matters."

Even Apple skeptics tend to acknowledge that Apple figured these things out earlier than their PC competition -- the company had to be different to survive. Now that others (Sony, HP, etc.) are recognizing the opportunity, Apple has to adapt again.

Why wouldn't Apple customers treat Apple products like commodities - that's exactly what they are!
I disagree with your premise that Mac OS X = Windows, therefore Apple = PC since all hardware is interchangeable. If so, where are the Apple clones? Oh, right: "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac," [Apple Senior VP Phil Schiller] said.

Of course it's online order only. BB does not sell Apple systems in their physical store locations.

Yes, but you missed what I said about the desktop systems. It is possible to select "in store pickup" on desktop systems. Doesn't mean that YOUR local stores have them. And just because they aren't physically in the store doesn't mean that they can't order them. We have been able to order them for customers in the past. When the Mini first came out we did carry it in the store. And BBY DOES sell apple systems in their stores, just maybe not your store. It really depends on the local market if your local store will actually carry them. I just found 17" and 20" iMacs in a store close to the 90001 Area code. Figured the stores in or near LA, CA would carry them.

SO, the point is, you can get all Macs through best buy Online or in store (local market dependant) except for the lap tops. Take it for what it's worth.

Are you expecting something in addition to the video iPod? According to this the video iPod won't be released until next year (which completely bypasses not only the release of Zune, but the holiday buying season altogether...something I fail to comprehend.)

Incidentally they also believe that the long rumored "wide screen video iPod" will begin production in the December quarter, but is not expected to see a release until next year.

Try 90064 area code, they also have the 24in iMac C2D at my local BB in La La Land, thing looks friggin huge next to a puny 20in... at least that's what I think I saw, maybe I was just hallucinating (forgot to take a picture for proof ;) , tried that once in another local LA store and the managers got all hot N bothered saying it's strictly prohibited by BB policy, unless you have permisssion 1st...wtf is up with that BS?).

They're get the stage all to themselves, and be able to kick the Zune's a$$ by outdoing it in every way.
:D
lol. Yes, well, I would rather they kick Zune's "a$$" before it ever got off the ground. Better yet...release it the week before Zune's release. :)

Let me pose this question...

As a switcher, who is interested in just the macbook, would it be better to buy now, with a $120 discount, or wait for the C2D to come out. Are there hardware upgrades coming or is the only differnce a #2. Will the macbooks now be able to run Leoperd EFFICIENTLY? Can Jobs throw me a bone here?
