Wait... so the 24 inch has component and composite... but the 30 doesn't well thats a joke... Guess i'm getting the 24 then... and I was so excited...

Besides the size, what would a side by side comparison reflect between the Apple 23" display & the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP display?

Would be interesting to see if all these people would buy Merom MBP when it comes out (possibly) next week?

Santa Rosa is around the corner... and I bet I'm gonna see a thread titled "wait for Santa Rosa?"

ROFL

I will be waiting for Santa Claus, but I am not waiting for Santa Rosa.

Apple - only has DVI input.
Dell - DVI+HDCP, Component, Composite/S.Video inputs

Apple - USB 2.0 hub w/2 ports, FW400 hub with 2 ports.
Dell - USB 2.0 hub w/4 ports (2 side, 2 rear), 9-in-2 media card reader.

Both have excellent image quality and color. The Dell is a little brighter with a better contrast ratio -- it's a newer panel, the latest from Samsung vs. the 2 year old panel from Hitachi in Apple's 23". It's actually the same LCD panel being used in the new 24" iMac. The Apple version has the brushed aluminum frame to match your Mac, but that's really all it has going for it compared to the Dell when you consider you can also save a bit of money with the Dell monitor too.

Compare them both online - both Apple and Dell have full spec sheets posted.

The Dell 24" has the 9-in-2 media card reader? I saw that on the 30" but did not see that on the 24". I really like that as a secondary feature, not a necessity/priority, but nice to have.

The savings is really compelling me to consider a Dell. So outside of the cosmetics & some misc. ports, it sounds like the Dell is the way to go when we are talking the actual display itself.

Does any one think that the new MacBook Pro will allow for 4GB of RAM? Does anyone think it will be 4 slots or just 2 slots?

There will still be just 2 slots - no reason to have 4, except maybe in the 17" model at some point down the road. And no, I don't think the updated MBP will support 4GB RAM... Which is too bad, because that's the feature I really need. Currently the i945 mobile chipsets that is being used with the Merom processor in both the MBP (current version) and the C2D iMac only allows for 32bit memory addressing. Meaning that there's a total of 4GB addressable for the whole system. After you factor in video memory and all the other hardware memory I/O addresses, you have jut a bit over 3GB of usable RAM space. This is why Apple sells 3GB for the C2D iMac and not 4GB... They don't want to sell people RAM that can't be used... Some other PC makers (Dell, Alienware) will sell the full 4GB in their Merom/i945 systems even though that last 800MB or so is unusable -- because it looks better from a marketing point of view (even though they spell out the limitation in the fine-print, this is kinda slimy), and because with two matched modules you get the benefits of dual-channel memory access even though you're not using all the RAM.

There is a 64bit compliant version of the Napa platform (Napa64), but there curretnly is no mobile version of this chipset. For RAM addressability beyond 4GB, we'll most likely have to wait for the upcoming Crestline chipset (the key component to the Santa Rosa specification) and that probably won't show up until February or so.

For now, I'm expecting a speed bump on the MB and MBP with C2D processors and some of the cooling issues addressed. Possibly a slight GPU bump on the MBP, possibly a dedicated GPU as an optional upgrade for the MB. In about 6 months - about April '07 is when I would expect the major overhaul of Apple's notebook lines, faster CPUs, full use of 4GB (possibly more on the 17").

Yes - look HERE.

Yes and a 3 year warranty is included in the base price too. If you're still undecided, Dell usually has booths or kiosks set up in a lot of shopping malls. Especially around the holidays, you may want to see if your local mall has a Dell kiosk where you can see one of these monitors for yourself. But they're really nice.

Or you can get: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...CategoryId=pcmcat95100050025&id=1138084694260

That is the westinghouse 42w2 1920x1080 set, has (2) dvi, hdmi, vga, component and a few other inputs. Hangs on the wall easily and has a desktop stand. Right now it is 1619 online...

There is also a 37" version.

The service codes are known, with very good color balance settings available. Should even make the most dedicated designers happy.

(I love mine, and it looks great with my mac mini)

Now I just want my 1920x1200 macbook pro.

um, if you go the intel site, you will notice that the 945PM chipset, which you can buy, can take up to 4GB, and isn't it true that the actual limitation is from the 32-bit apps?

cause with a 64bit os, processor, and application would allow the full 4GB to be addressed right?

All the i945 series chipsets take or address 4GB. But they must still share that 4GB (32bit address window) with all other memory devices in the system. Just because it says "supports 4GB" doesn't mean you can drop 4GB of RAM into a PC/Mac using that chipset. I wish it were different, but it's not. You can put 2x2GB modules in an i945 based system (like the C2D iMac systems). The chipset will "see" the RAM, but it will only allow the OS to allocate approximately 3.2GB to the RAM heap -- or whatever is left over after addresses for video memory and everything else are isolated.

32bit applications are limited to 2GB per process. There are ways around that to access a bit more and that's up to software developers to choose to do so. 32bit software essentially runs in a 32bit emulation or protected environment, where it's presented with a 32bit representation of memory values on the system. All Intel64 and AMD64 CPUs using the x86 64bit extensions have a 40bit memory address window -- Or 1 Terrabyte of addressable memory. Once again, this must be shared with all memory addressing devices in a system, but it will be some time yet before this becomes an issue - about 10 years if Intel's predictions are correct. Although, the CPU itself is still at the mercy of the controlling chipset and what it actually supports/allows. If your chipset can't see more than 4GB total address space in the entire system, then you can't use more.

we ought to change the name of this thread too:

this is the great thing about large threads, you can pretty much have any question answered... but... tuesday anyone?:D

Someone posted on the 'Video iPod' thread that according to

http://www.apple-history.com/

there were only 4 products throughout the whole history of Apple that where introduced in November and absolutely none in December.

So, if there is no update soon we can pack our packs and leave this thread alone until January

True... but 50% off those products were the Powerbook G4 and iBook in November 2002 :)

That be nice as hell but a little out of the price range... even the 37 is out of the price range...

I'll look for some coupons though maybe then. Ok one other question, and then i promise that I will not get off topic/goal for my MMBP!:

The MBP out of the box can not run two monitors correct? Two 24 inchers would be my next goal...

Just thought I would add something about C2D availability. I noticed a month or so ago that despite the fact that C2D were technically released, Apple was not the only company to hold off on using them.

Even companies like Asus and Sony that did release C2D laptops released them in limited numbers and they were completely unavailable from the big discount sites like Newegg.com and Tigerdirect.com, even though both of those sites do sell non-C2D laptops from those companies.

Last week there were finally two C2D laptops available at Newegg. This week there are nine. It looks like we are very close to the time when they are fully available, and it seems likely that once that heppens Apple will release the upgrade too.

Yeah, sure, I'll place my bets on Tuesday. ...and if I'm wrong, so what, there's no accountability.

MacRumors should be more explicit about how many times their sources have predicted stuff and it has come true, and when the other places, like AI, predict stuff and if it comes true or not.

Yeah, I know there was recently a post about AI's past predictions, but it didn't include all of the times they've hyped stuff up and nothing's happened. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
