While I'd Settle For 1080 High, 17" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 Is My New Must Have Spec

Gah. Thinking of HDTV res for some reason... don't ask.

Yeah, 1920x1200. :)
Fair enough. Either is fine with me. But 1920 x 1200 seems to be a new 17" size manufacturers are making in quantity because Alienware only wants $100 more for it up from a meager 1440 x 900, Apple's 15" res, skipping Apple's 17" 1650 x 1050 res, which I think is a steal. I mean it almost looks like a misprint.

How I wish Apple would take a clue from Alienware and give us that kind of amazing display option for that kind of low additional BTO price, although I would pay any price they choose to have it. I'm even beginning to think of it in terms of a must have spec before I'll pull the trigger - probably not for sure yet. But now that I'm aware of it, thanks to saveranger's research, it's gonna gnaw at me a lot until Apple does offer it.

Oh My God! Look at this!

Alienware® m5550 15.4" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD +$200

up from 1280 x 800 -MacBook res- in a $999 Core 2 Duo 15.4" Laptop as well as the 17" version for +$100. That's 150% higher resolution for only $200 more. Incredible!!

Man their pricing is incredibly aggressive.

Yeah, definitely. Thus far tho', it seems Apple doesn't do cheap upgrades...

1920x1200 is the computer panel size -- widescreen panels are usually 16:10DAR, vs 16:9DAR of HDTV resolutions...

I've vaguely wondered why. I guess it works better for notebook shapes.

Doesn't surprise me considering they are now part of the Dell family...;)

i've given up hoping and waiting desperately for an update. as long as i have the MBP by midterms, around the end of october or the beginning of november (though early- to mid-october would be best), i'll be okay. i won't be happy, but at least i won't harbor any further childish resentment...

edit: actually, yes, i will be happy; i will be deliriously happy and forget all about my impatiently patient struggles against the grain of my own need for instant gratification. it sure is getting easier, though, the waiting, literally with cash in hand, except with my hands in my pockets. this is like an abusive relationship, albiet (imaginitively) mental versus physical.

I'm in the same boat as you, I need a laptop before midterms (late Oct.) and it would really suck if they don't update the MacBook Pros by then.

for some reason i'm hoping that igary is right about the merom macbook pros not being released until next year which will probably give us santa rosa. Because thinking about how long it's taken for apple to release a merom macbook pro, why would they release one on a new platform in 3-4 months if they release in november? It would stop me from shelling out money for something that I would probably regret when i see how well the NAND flash technology comes along with santa rosa. I think that it will be likely for a new form factor by then. If this next update is just a processor swap with fw800 and 8x superdrive in the 15 incher update i probably will wait til santa rosa. Unless we hear news of it being delayed but it doesn't sound likely when watching one of the IDF speeches.

Apple Is Not Going To Wait For Santa Rosa • C2D MBP & MB Will Ship This Fall

I think exactly the opposite. I think we get a new design now that is Pre-Engineered for Santa Rosa so it will not change the way it looks next Spring.

Your sense of time is a bit skewed. Almost none of the C2D systems are shipping yet. Intel just admitted they have just finished helping Apple with the new MacBook Pro design. What's the problem with Apple being among the last to reveal and ship their new C2D mobiles. After all, revealing last gives them a leg up on the competition that won't be able to copy them any time soon as they will all be committed to inferior designs for the holiday season.

I think the idea that Santa Rosa is worth waiting for and that Apple is going to do so is laughable. :p I think Santa Rosa is going to make almost no difference from what is released in the next few weeks. I think the only reason to wait for a Santa Rosa update would be if you don't really need one now and want to wait for the MB or MBP to ship with Leopard.

The new Macbook Pros will come out on October the 26th. When there is a Mac Expo. So we still have 27 days to go yet!

Flood Of Updates Normally Presages New Hardware and/or New Software Announcements

It seems like every time apple does a big round of updates like this (ilife/iwork/osx) something always comes out the following week. whether it be new software or updated hardware. Hmmmmm.....
I hope you're right. I'll take any shred of clue. October 3 seems like a good time - as good as any other Tuesday. The following weekend is 3 days thanks to Monday October 9 being Columbus Day - an American National Holiday used for early Christmas shopping by many who get the day off. :)

I'm still curious as to how much difference Robson will make, and if OS X will allow similar functionality from USB memory sticks in the way that Vista does.

Actually, I have wondered about existing systems and running all VM on a USB stick, if that would approximate the "new technology" now. Not as efficient but probably confers some of the benefits...

SR should be a bit better on battery life, too, which is always nice -- the chipset's now aware of when L2 powers down, and the FSB now scales so that at idle it's 400MHz instead of 800MHz and halves CPU's minimum frequency. From what I've read, that's probably an extra 20 minutes of battery life... with Robson adding maybe the same, depending on all sorts.

I think if it's worth waiting probably depends upon how much the benefits it offers will affect how you work -- and, of course, how great your need for a new system is.

Talking of waiting, Penryn - the die-shrink of Merom - will have at least a partial implementation of SSE4. That interests me somewhat, but it's also about a year away...

I'm hoping it'll be sooner than that.

Just inform them that there is no chance in hell of that happening. The moderators will shut the thread down WAY before the record 6,197 posts is reached.

Well, I'm convinced. At this point, it seems like people are posting over there JUST for the sake of making the thread longer. Aggravating.

As far as I'm aware, the only references to record breaking have been from the anti-record-breaking camp. I myself thought that would be a stupid idea, & couldn't believe anyone would try that

I don't think anyone is aiming to get over 6200 posts are they?!

I don't think that beating a "post your rig pics" thread is ever a sane idea (edit: some beautiful pics btw) -- yet I was very active on that thread. I didn't see why finishing the day's ongoing conversation was such a problem. Better than pasting our (off-topic frankly) posts here & continuing. What kind of dictatorship are we running here? Let me know 'O mighty ones

Multimedia & others are spot on in mentioning the post redundancy. It would be insane to read the whole thing through from the start. People are doing it right now though I guess! It's annnoying to repeatedly point out to 32-bit spec-brandishers that personal 64-bit benchmarking beats "coulds" & "shoulds" every time. In future I shall employ the HecubusPro manoeuvre with regards to why I am waiting

HecubusPro said:

That was pretty much the last I saw of him, which is a shame.

Anyway, I find I'm getting into the swing of waiting now, & can sit it out until a significant upgrade comes -- the Gelsinger update was great to hear. I'm thinking MacExpo, but would love something before of course :D

oh boy; here we go again to "Merom Macbook pro next tuesday?" until mac expo. and then? macworld 2007?

this upgrade better be REALLY HUGE

Well I just made a post over at the fully bloated 107 page 2669 post "MacBook Pro Upgrade At Photokina?" Thread asking all of them to come over here since that thread is no longer a relevant topic. But so far no go. Some of them are hung up on setting a record for thread length.

Lol, here I am Multimedia. Still fully hoping for "next Tuesday", or better be, "tomorrow" upgrade of MBP. :)

I'll perhaps put both of my feet on the two forums, this and the other one, since some bloke there actually posted interesting ideas and arguments, so yeah.

A buddy of mine purchased a MBP in July. This was his first mac and I had been trying to get him to switch for a long time. I saw him again in August and he told me that he was having issues with his display going out. He called Applecare, they walked him through some troubleshooting and it seemed to go away, only to come back a couple of days latter. He suffered through it to finish some projects and sent his MBP in for service two weeks ago. On Monday of this week, he called Apple to check on it as it showed "Pending Shipment" for several days. The told him that they were in fact waiting on a backordered part, but to call back by Thursday if he didn't receive it. He called back last night and told them that he either needed his machine fixed and returned or he wanted a new machine. The rep said that at this point they were willing to give a new machine, but that the 17" was backordered and it would take longer to get a new one than get the part to fix his. I know that the apple store still shows a 24hr ship time on those, but maybe it's a sign that stock is indeed dwindling and we are on the horizon for the new MBP!

I've been waiting to buy since July and am just trying to be patient with the rest of you! Today has been good though, because I ordered a Mac Pro and it wasn't supposed to be here until next Wednesday - FedEx just dropped it off...so I'm off to see how fast it really is!!!

My gut is that we'll see new MBPs within the next 3 weeks!

lol, why are you posting in two forums?

Hmmm. Personally, I really doubt we'll see any MBP updates until Penryn in late 2007 and even then only a simple drop-in processor refresh.

I don't think we're likely to see any changes in form factor (HDD access bay, case redesign etc) until early 2008. The current MBP design is fine, as it Yonah. Why change it?

WE WANT MMBP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Sigh i need a machine that can run windows ASAP and it CAN'T be the current MBPs. Seriously considering an iMac now or a Mini BUT i need mobility.
Sigh, you are buying a Mac just because so you can run Windows on it? -_-

Sigh* :( It really is dissapointing, i'm honestly really getting tired of waiting. I'm sure that my roomates get annoyed whenever I have to use their computers as well. BUT i'll wait cuase i know if i were to buy one then the updated ones would come out right after. May I ask what are good speakers to go with a mbp? I plan on buying some when the update comes out. I wonder if it's better to buy that seperate mighty mouse and wireless keyboard set up like some people have..

Huh? You gotta link?

InfoWeek link is in a post a few ago.

CRN: Intel shared the stage at IDF with Apple. How will Intel's relationship with Apple evolve in 2007, or is the cooperation mostly finished?

GELSINGER: It's far from done. Let's take it in phases. First was the honeymoon, where we won Apple as a customer. The second phase was execution and getting products done and, third, we just finished that. The MacBook Pro was the last product. We just finished the birthing. We've just gotten that done, but a number of projects are under way with Apple on next-generation technologies -- but I can't detail those. Apple is very secretive, even to us. It's the nature of the company.
