maybe you can start some kind of breakfast kitchen serving eggs on your new yonah macbook pro. jk good luck man, i've tested them out in store and they don't seem to get too hot recently.

Saw that too

I just tried to configure a Mini with a 160GB hard drive and the estimated ship went from 24hrs to 4-6 weeks. Doesn't that seem a little strange for a simple hard drive swap:confused:

Maybe they need all of the 160GB drives for the new MBPs.

Tadow is right. I checked and he is right. I wonder what the deal is. Sudden 160GB HDD shortage? 4-6 weeks seems very odd.

maybe it just means that they forgot how to put it in. jk

Mac mini 160GB HDD Option...

Is the 160GB Hard Drive option on the Mac mini a new thing? Also, why is it not an option on any other mac using a 2.5inch drive...?

You're probably right. I'm just looking for a reason to believe. I hope the delay is due to a thermal redesign.

Interesting. One of two options, I guess. No 160GB 2.5" drives available for at least a month due to suplier issues or they are plunking them in new mbps (which would have a bigger profit margin)...

I have to say that I was somewhat surprised that they went with the meroms in the iMacs first. You would have thought that they would have gone with the lower volume, higher profit items first (even if they were trying to sell the sleek new 24"ers). It isn't as if the iMac is competing with the high end desktops (the only ones that are going to see any form of c2d at the moment; because of the same low volume/high profit rationale). It makes me think that apple is doing more than just a processor swap with the new mbps. I've been waiting to pull the trigger for a month or so. Soon, I'm going to have to do it... Here's to a new mbp in the near future.

cheers.

I agree, something is going on at Cupertino...

Steve Jobs is messing with our Apple-Release-O-Detect-Omoter and he damn well knows it.

Just when I was going to relax... people raise my hopes again.

I am really hopping that the hard drive shortage is because they are putting them in the macbook pro's. 160gb! That would be glorious. So much room for my photos! :D

i hope the delay is due to the merom not being much of a better improvement to the macbook pro. I think they'll release it with santa rosa like features at mwsf (new inclosure, 800mhz fsb, robson, 802.11n etc.)

I hope not tho.

There's no reason why they shouldn't release the MMBP along with MiMac. just because Santa Rosa's coming out, doesn't mean that they can't update the MMBP. If there's shortage for Merom, there's every reason to believe there's shortage for Santa Rosa. Furthermore, historically in Apple, there's never been any product jump from 1 to 3 (namely, if one product gets processor X, then the other product line should also get processor X.) That's my 2 cents worth.

While we can all speculate about specific reasons for the delay, I think one thing is becoming more certain as time passes. And that's increased certainty of additional upgrades or design changes in addition to simply dropping in the Merom CPU. Merom is readily available in all speeds except 2.33GHz, but even that doesn't carry too much of a delay (3 to 7 days max from most PC vendors, including Apple with their 24" iMac). There's not a significant enough shortage of Merom to delay an update to a very popular product line that people are desperately wanting to buy from them. There's something else going on and I think many of the theories mentioned in these threads (cooling system redesign, timing with Xserve and new AirPort releases, Other design changes to MBP, possibly better optical drives, GPU, etc..) are all good possibilities.

There's a lot of talk about Santa Rosa, but it's nothing more than a code name for a specific platform configuration. The Merom CPU is part of the Santa Rosa spec. Apple has not officially announced that they will be part of the Santa Rosa (or whatever it will ultimately be called) branding program. And this makes sense from Apple's perspective. Why would they want to be another "Centrino Duo 2" (or whatever) compatible system. OTOH, a lot of buyers may want them to be since the other PC systems they're considering are labeled that way...

We will see new MBP systems in the coming weeks before Holiday shopping goes into full swing. Official people at Apple have already said this. For Apple to wait for MWSF would be a bad move. I wouldn't doubt them having additional updates at MacWorld, but we will still see Merom before the holiday shopping rush has ended. And this means anytime between tomorrow and about November 23 (Thanksgiving time in the USA). But if we're going to talk predictions, I'm still sticking by 10/31 as the most likely release date, at least in my mind.

Well - as stated in an earlier post - I caved in and ordered a stock 17" MBP through Amazon on Saturday.

It arrived this evening and my quick assessment is - thumbs up. This is a week 38 build - matte screen. NO WHINE - NO INVERTER BUZZ - NO HEAT ISSUES YET - no hiss or fan noises - keyboard is excellent - fit and finish is about the same as my earlier TiPB and AlPB, very nice - no bulges, gaps, screen scratches, poor battery fit or any other issues seen thus far.

This really takes the heat off of me and I can focus back on work. It is slow on large graphic files - I'll order another gig of ram in the morning.

I'll report back with another update after I get a few more days of real use under my belt.

Congrats! I think you'll be happy with it... I caved nearly 2 weeks ago (couldn't live without a laptop, clients were actually offering to buy me one so I could get their work done on-site). I bought a refurb'd 15.4" 2GHz from Apple's online store. Swapped out the 512MB module for 2x1GB and I went through the hell of upgrading the stock 60GB HD to a 160GB. I'm am very pleased with this system. No problems, no issues, no dead pixels, arrived in perfect mint condition even though it was a refurb unit. The only complaints is I can't keep the wife away from it. She wants a new notebook as well - her old HP is well, really old. So the plan is she gets this system I just bought and I get the new C2D model when they ship. Unless there's not much improvement over current models - I may just go for another refurbished unit like this one to save money and then upgrade again with the next major update . I really could use an MBP that supports a full 4GB and I doubt we'll see such a thing until next year sometime.

yeah i really wont go for it if it doesn't support at least 4gb of ram

There's also no reason to believe Santa Rosa will be available by MWSF.

Earlier roadmaps listed it as an April release. Intel's since made comments about wanting it ready to go with Vista but expecting to miss. The best I've seen is 1Q07, where-as MSWF is the third week in '07...

Having said that, moving to to SR wouldn't be skipping anything as such; it's the same Merom core, just running at a higher FSB (which overclockers have demonstrated it can handle now).

Of course, there's a third possibility. SR is a complete platform, but it's possible parts of that platform might be available ahead of time. Crestline - the chipset - is the mobile version of i965. If the non-integrated graphics version is available together with suitable Merom processors and the mobile ICH8...

Apple already uses non-Intel wifi.

Do I think that's realistic? Not really. Possible? Perhaps.

Apple Can't Seem To Add New Options To Old Lines Even Though They're Offered On Newer

It was added as an option to the mini when they changed the mini offerings. Apple doesn't seem to be able to offer new stuff to old lines - it's weird. So when the MB & MBP go C2D you will surely see the 160 offered then.

mini will also go C2D this Fall but speeds will probably not change so no 4MB shared L2 cache on the mini yet unless they offer the 2GHz C2D as a BTO option - let's hope. :)

congrats applecorp, the 17" mbp is the one i'm gonna buy too.

but i have a question, how is the screen? Any uneven brightness?, i am not sure if the newer ones still have this problem.

I went to fry's on saturday, and the 17" mbp they had on display had a really unevenly lit screen. the center was nice and bright but everything around the edges was dark I also saw this on the 17" mbp at microcenter. Although the 15" mbps at both locations were fine.

can you test your screen for me? replace the desktop color to #FF8000, then see how consistant the color is.

On a side note, i've been looking to buy an lcd monitor, and am definately going to buy the 23" ACD. - I went to fry's and went to all the monitors they had and set the background color to #FF8000 and the only one with consistent color was the apple 23"!! - really the rest had a nice bright orange at the top and the bottom was a yellow-orangy color.

I think that's too long. I'll predict Tuesday 10/17. (Edited to correct date error)

Last year's New York media event was Wednesday 10/19. That event was first rumored on the 13th and confirmed on the 14th. It included new PowerBooks, Dual Core Power Macs, and a price drop in Cinema Displays. And also Aperture.

Does that mean that MacBooks/Pros don't have to wait for Santa Rosa in order to get wireless pre-n? Could that kind of redesign be a reason for the present delay? We've already heard that the C2D iMacs have hardware that can do pre-n which is not yet enabled in the software. Did the old CD iMacs have the same wireless hardware as the present CD MacBooks/Pros?

Oops. I promise I just checked that in iCal, but when I rechecked, Tuesday had changed to the 17th. Must be these new bifocals.
