Curious

Just curious how many of those who can afford to wait only have G4/G3 systems?. Because that means you guys have serious willpower. I can understand G5 or even intel owners being able to wait. Me i'm reaching the snap point.

Universal is totally different from 64-bit. Most apps will see no gain from the 64-bit arctitecture and will never see 64-bit versions as long as 32-bit is supported, and it will be for a long time.

You underestimate most developers.

Edit: As long as "most developers" != Adobe, MS, ... The NOT massive-behemoth-developers update pretty quickly. Take a look at how many apps have already been updated to Universal.

Edit-again: Look at Blizzard. They've updated several apps for Universal + Multi-Threaded GL ... that's not slow adoption. There are many examples, as long as you're not talking about Adobe.

Reasons to keep hope alive

<snip> Many others here and I strongly disagree with you. We don't know this either, but believe it will have all of the above changes Foggy lists and be out soon.

Besides all the wishful thinking we're guilty of, I think there's at least a couple of reasons to expect updates reasonably soon (at worst, I'd wager by the end of the month).

1) The MBPs were updated longest ago. Everything else has seen a refresh more recently. The MBP is obviously next in line. More importantly, since it's one of Apple's "pro" machines, it has a bit of a reputation to maintain. It's going to be something of a black eye for Apple if their "pro" notebook starts beeing viewed as outdated and/or underpowered. The stakes are pretty big for Apple here.

2) Especially since Apple is now competing on an even playing field with PC manufacturers (i.e. they, like the others, are using Intel now), Apple has something to prove: that they can still make great machines and that they can keep up with the pace of the rest of the industry. Again, if they fail, they've got a lot to lose.

3) Finally, almost everyone agrees that an MBP refresh will happen before the holiday shopping season. But keep in mind that as long as other manufacturers have C2D laptops available and Apple does not, Apple stands to lose customers. Granted, the holiday rush hasn't nearly begun yet, but if Apple stalls too long, the apetite for C2D notebooks may already have been satiated (okay, no, but mitigated, at least) by the other, already-available C2D notebooks.

So there's that. I admit I'm doing my share of justifying waiting another day/week/month, but it seems like, pretty rationally, Apple has powerful incentives to release C2D notebooks soon. I'm betting before the end of the month.

Both my Macs are G3. They just manage meet my needs at the moment, but I expect to keep my next computer as long as possible, so I'll wait.

Yes, for most the transition from PPC to Universal is different, you're right. However, for those of us that have written PPC optimizations, the transition is actually quite similar. Find the places in your apps where 64-bit can help, and implement an optimization path for it.

For PPC -> Universal, the locations for potential optimization were already identified, true. In many cases those same locations may benefit from 64-bit, so will probably be likely first candidates.

The other places will get figured out as time goes on. The again, some of us have entire libraries of 64-bit data-types and functionality. Those can get optimized fairly quickly. This is where you're probably going to see big gains early on. Imagine an abstract data type for doing 64-bit operations suddenly becoming native. For Linux+AMD-64 many of us have already done 64-bit optimizations, and they make a difference.

Many will also be following Apple's lead on this a bit based upon new API's/Functionality.

I just think it's silly to think that 64-bit utilization is going to take a long time to 'catch on'. Many developers are ready to go, they just need the CPU's to get out there.

Edit: Fixed some goofy sentences.

Now, this may be worth waiting for if Apple likes it enough...

"The series of laptops, codenamed Newport, were said to have a main screen and an additional external display built into the top of the lid. These could be used to scan emails, access a calendar, check network connections and monitor downloads without having to fire up the laptop" Apparenly the battery can last for hours in this mode....

I could see this in the new Macbook Pro! :)

AlBook G4 1.25...which is my main machine, since I travel to clients often.

But I do have a CD mini :)

Possibly, I'm not sure about how useful this is, but I'm sure someone would like it. I just figure, if I already have to take my laptop out of my case, then I might as well pop the lid open.

However, Apple does have a great simple interface, already in use...Front Row. Which we know they will use on the iTV, in some updated form.

Interesting.

I've got a 400Mhz Pismo G3 which I use for personal stuff. Makes me want to cry. The Dell Inspiron 9400 for Win32 and Linux work is much more personable, but not mine.

Desktops G4 (1.4Ghz) (Mine) and G5 (2.0Ghz) (Not mine) are just fine. AMD 64 x2 4400 for Win32 and Linux (Not mine).

So...I want the C2D MBP for myself, though I'm sure I'll do work on it.

I have a dual 2.5 G5 and I was really tempted to upgrade to the Mac Pro or Macbook Pro, but I have decided to wait until after the Mac World Expo in San Francisco on January 9th (Keynote date) to see what is announced. After all, it's only 90 days away.

I have now decided to replace my current laptop (a 15.4" PC, centrino 1.6Ghz) with a MacBook... my only doubt is if I should wait for the Merom chips or just go to the store and get myself a Core Duo right now.

Oh, the doubt!

if you don't NEED it right away for work/school then wait

I've got the G4 1.25GHz 15" Powerbook. I'm waiting on some serious back pay from my job before I can splurge on a new Macbook Pro. So in my case there's no willpower involved at all; I just don't have the scratch yet. :D

Although I gotta say for most things my Powerbook is really perfectly fine speed-wise. I'm mainly looking forward to Aperture speeding up.

I just found out that I need a laptop in about 1.5 weeks. I have a video project due on the 23rd of October. I need to edit the video before then and I need apple to ship C2D MBPs tuesday or wendsday at the LATEST. I don't know what I'm going to do if they don't ship by then.

FWIW, I spoke with an account executive with a large Apple online retailer. I asked him if he had any inkling of a imminent MBP refresh release. He told me that only know "24 hrs in advance" from Apple of any new product releases, thus they are clueless like the rest of us!

Well, I hate to be that guy...but get a CD MBP. It will work just fine for what you are planning on doing, video editing. Especially if you have a project due w/ nothing else to do it on.

Seems the only real pro machines out there are the mac pros which are feel are good buys since you can swap out processors yourself which i believe is what Apple is gonna do anyway come next WWDC.

It still baffles me thoough as to why Apple left out an IR sensor and FrontRow. Yes its a pro machine so what. At least offer it as a BTO.

Is it just me or is the entire mac line just lacking in something

Macmini (Graphics)
MacBook (Graphics)
MacBook Pro (FW800,DL SuperDrive)
iMac (Height Adjustability, Upgradeability)
MacPro (FrontRow/IR Sensor, Graphics)
Displays (ports/adjustability) (plus UK shoppers are being swindled/lied to about specs)
iPod (Voice Recorder
Its just never complete is it, there's that one thing that would have made a product perfect but is always left out.

I have a Mac Pro in my basket now but someting keeps telling me to wait that much longer and that ill be glad i did. On the flip side another voice is like "Buy the desktop now, you won't even be impressed when the MBP is finally unveiled....all the wait would be a waste of time".

I wont agree, you can never have the perfect product then.

you can do it... buy it now... :-D anyway, if the new mbp is amazing, then sell the "old" mbp, and buy the new..

but you can try to be as close as possible.

hehe yeah, but still, if they add'ed better graphic in the mb, then there will be another thing. for example fw800.. there will be no end

I'm typing this on a final rev PBG4 that I'm selling to my mother, leaving me with my old G4 tower. These do fine for everything besides my photoshop/garageband/fcp work. I'm thrilled to think of the difference that a C2D MB(P) will make. Without any big projects looming I'm straining, but I know I can wait.

I hope for a redesign a la Multimedia, at least the removable HD. Thinking MB might get C2D simultaneously with MBP.

ps hoping for next Wednesday, but prepping for a wait til Thanksgiving. In any case the good news is it's coming and it's going to be good.

lol its when i play vidcasts like MacBreak that i'm reminded that the G4 while sufficient is yesterdays news. original FPS is 24.00...playing FPS is anything from 0.02 to 12.45 at most. Good times.
