I have a question related to the refreshes. I'm going to order a MacBook Pro 17'' at the online U.S. Apple Store, and because of trip schedules, it absolutely has to be delivered no later than October 26th. Do I run the risk of this not happening? I was going to order a custom version with 2 x 512 MB of RAM, but if that's the difference between getting delivered on time or not, I'll happily take the 1 x 1 GB version.

I also have a few other questions: 1. when I order, will my credit card get charged right away? 2. can I cancel the order at any time before shipping, if it draws too close to the deadline? 3. can I trust the shipping estimates given by Apple? 4. can I return it and get the full money back if it doesn't arrive on time? (it'll be shipped to a friend's house, he will return it for me if it doesn't arrive on time) 5. any other advice for this situation? (no technical advice on my choice of configuration or whether I should wait for the refreshes or not, please.)

Thanks

What happens is they will put a hold on the funds when your order is placed, and just before they build/ship your order, they will then debit your card.

Don't think the MBP comes with a single 1GIG stick.I do believe they all come with 2 512Meg sticks

Try customising one at a store, you can get it for cheaper this way.

Its either 1x 512MB stick, 2x 512MB or 1x 1GB stick

Hi all,

The shipping time on the Apple Store for Education Institutions (not Education Individuals, like students or teachers) has increased even further from the 7-10 days it was on Wednesday.

So I guess shipping by the end of October? Doesn't sound too flash with me...

What'd be even more heinous is if it is just a simple chip swap

Does this mean anything? When shipping times from the regular store change then I will start to be happy.

BTW, what schools have this type fo deal?

I think the one that was posted before was a delay of only a couple days, I think this is much longer, I might be wrong.

This is for institutional (bulk) purchasers, so it might mean something.

No Problem :D and to insert a link all you have to do is click the Earth with the chain under the smilies which is next to the A with the bar under it. Just copy and paste the url into the box. You can also put [ u r l ] (Without the spaces) in front of a website and [ / u r l ] (without the spaces) after the website

Buy a Stock 17" MBP At An Apple Store Or Save Money And Buy The Refrub For Less

Best bet is to buy the stock 17" at an Apple store so you have 14 days to return it if the new one comes along after October 26th. It comes with one 1GB stick which is all you want anyway. No point in customizing it for that diff and you can add an inexpensive 3rrd party - won't void your warranty - 1GB stick when you get back for even better performance.

Better still get the same exact new computer from the SAVE refurb page with the same new warranty for a fraction of the cost of a new one - only $2399. You save $400 and get the same quality computer. Refurbs are indistinguishable from new and they include the new warranty.

The SAVE Page link is lower right column of the online store. BIG RED SAVE TAG is the link. Then click on Macs button next to the iPod button it defaults to.

If/when the C2D MBPs are released, about how much will the refurb pices drop?

As I am on a budget, I think this would be a great situation for me. I especially like the old mid-line 2.0GHZ (1GB RAM, 256VRAM) edition.

Thanks.

Not too much. About the current difference is average, unless there is a ton of them backed up that aren't moving.

Apple's used market holds a pretty good value, as multimedia and a couple others have mentioned a few times.

Refurb Prices Do NOT Go Down After New Models Come Out

None. See the Quad G5? It's the same price it was in January of this year. See the iBooks? Same price as to begin with. Apple doesn't lower prices of refurbs at all after releasing new editions.

The prices of the iPods and iMacs did drop in the SAVE store when new revs come out, so that argument might not hold for the MBPs as well.
The iBook and PM might be exceptions (seeing as to how the PPC line is discontinued, so if you NEED them you have no superior choice to turn to) and that might be the rationale.

I'd expect the intel mac prices to drop with each rev, refurb or otherwise.

Um Shecky, I was the one that posted the earlier screen shot of the Apple Store when it was a wait time of 7-10 days. The wait times for school and college purchases has increased to 2-3 weeks for the 15-in. MacBook Pro. I cannot think of anything that screams pending update to the MacBook Pros more loudly. As I said in a previous post, the education sector is the first place Apple starts to clear the channel. I can cite two occasions in the last two months where this has already happened to me: the Xserve G5 and the iMac. I placed orders for my school to purchase them just prior to updates when the online store reflected the same types of delays we now see with the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

I'm thinking that, if the C2D isn't all that its cracked up to be when it is released, i'll just get a refurbished MBP...(no new design/accessible HD/ whatever) I mean then I could get FCP Studio or something.

But then again... I have been waiting for a long time now...

I originally decided to switch in November last year but heard about the intel switch and new I did not need a computer till now... Now I sit in my dorm pondering what to do... Wait I will but if there is no redisgn I'm starting to think its not really worth it...

What are you thoughts? Will 64-bit increase speeds on projects done on FCP? or anything that comes with studio? once Leopard is released?
Or would it not?

Just to be clear, my interest in returning the MBP is not to grab an updated version; what would happen if it arrived after October 26th is that I'd have taken the flight back home and wouldn't be able to get it anymore. My friend in the US would have it, but there's no way for him to ship it to Brazil, where I live -- I'd have to pay 80% import taxes, completely unacceptable. My choices from there would be either to return the computer, or try to sell it to someone or auction on eBay or whatever, and these latter choices are too much hassle for me, not to mention that I'll probably lose a little money in the process.

To reiterate my question, if Apple delivers it later than my deadline of October 26th, can I return it even if it's not faulty or anything? I must order online (no Apple retail stores in the region I'm in, I've looked already). From your answer, it seems it's possible to return if it's a stock version; what if I customized it?

Not exactly true. First of all, I save US$ 100 by going with 2 x 512 MB; second, Core Duo chipsets support dual channel memory, so having two sticks rather than one increases performance somewhat. I agree if I wanted to upgrade it to 2 GB (which I don't) it might be interesting to keep the 1 x 1 GB option, although from what I've heard, Macs are quite picky with regards to memory upgrades, so I might want to use a matched pair of modules from the same manufacturer. Either way, let's lay this subject to rest, I'm more interested in the answers to my other questions, such as whether I can cancel my order if the deadline looms near and there's no sign of the computer being shipped.

Thanks

I'm sure Apple will tout the new revision's 64-bit processor... I think it's worth it. Get FCP later. A 64-bit version of FCP, anyone? :)

I Agree No Re-Design No Sale

Not FCP but Motion 2 might get the 64-bit treatment. I'm with you on the no re-design no sale club though. I'll opt for a C2D MacBook in that case.

ahh. one would have thought i would read more carefully. while i look at this and certainly hope it is indicative of a 10/10 or 10/17 update i do not put a lot of stock in it yet to those specific dates (as in, that soon). the problem we are in now is not of "if" but of "when." we know (almost) certainly that updates are imminent, we just do not know when in the next couple of months they are going to show up.

so when you say you made orders "just prior" to new updates and saw these kinds of shipping estimates, can you narrow that down more - just before as in 3 weeks? just before as in 3 days? etc... this will give some potential insight as to what kind of a timeline we may be looking at for c2d mbp.

Right. A fraction of the cost. As seen on TV! Sure, technically it's a fraction of the cost, but the fraction is 6/7.

If you want to head home with a machine, get one now. From the sound of it I take it that once you depart, if you don't have one you won't for quite a while? If that's the case, forget all this rumor stuff, and get one.

If there isn't an Apple store near by, what about a CompUSA? Somebody around there, or within even a 90 minute drive has to sell them.

IF not, order one of the refurished MBP's, and save a little.

At least it will make it to you on time, and you won't end up without a machine.

Be like Nike, and just do it. In your situation, it doesn't make sense to me to wait for something that might not be out in time.

The current one will fit your needs for quite a while, and you'll be happy with it. If you were going into so intense video editing, and graphic work, C2D might benefit you.

Just remember, a machine can't benefit you at all if you don't have one.

P.S. might want to spring for the quicker delivery time. ;)
