Apple May Show 3-4 Weeks Shipping Date And Ship The Next Day

sjphoto said:
With a ship date of 11/2, you will more then likely be getting the CD2.
There's nothing "likely" about that order becoming a C2D at all.

Your shipping date means nothing. Apple's promised shipping dates are notoriously conservative and inaccurate. I have had shipping dates 3-4 weeks out for product that shipped the next day.

I really don't want to jump on the "cancel them" bandwagon but there is one thing you need to consider..The new MBP and MB WILL have the 802.11n wireless in them. This is something you will surely wish you had come January..

*sigh* Okay I called and cancelled the MBP (my notebook), but went ahead with the MB for my boyfriend. He does need a notebook *now* for school, and he can't wait.

I'll wait *one more week* for my MBP. :( But after that, I just need to order it.

So a C2D macbook would be the kick for me because i don't need a graphic card but the thing is I need at least a fw800 port on it to plug my soundcard and harddrive in serial ! I can not use my hardrive on usb2, not good for my fast access needs...

FW400 is not really any faster than USB2 for hard drive access...

Congratulations. But wait as long as it takes please?

Alienware is owned by Dell; they are not Dell.

I have no idea what you mean by "converted all their hardware"... Dell I'm sure provides them with much better rates on their hardware now... but Alienware has never been considered horrible. They've always been considered the "elite" laptops for gamers, even holding off VoodooPC for the title.

Yes, they are owned by dell. They now primarily supply Dell monitors and their desktop systems all use the same internal components, including the motherboard offerings that Dell has in the XPS line. With the Acquisition of Alienware by Dell, Alienware no longer carries several product lines that they used to offer. So I guess they didn't convert "all" their hardware, but huge changes were made. Or at least as huge as it can really get... As for notebooks from VoodooPC, that's lot of money to pay for a custom painted Sager, don't you think? Seriously, VoodooPC are way overpriced and have nothing unique to offer other than their generic cases from Chieftec, Lian-Li and Thermaltake that have been laser-cut and/or stamped/embossed at their custom shop and then painted. And then they charge $219 for an optional "tattoo" that takes some kid with an airbrush and stencil all of 2 minutes to do.

It's true Alienware has that "elite" image with many gamers, but for years they continuously were rated dead last of the eliteist PC companies for customer service and satisfaction. Unfortunately, I learned much of that too late and on my own as I had dealings with them in '02 and '03. Long story short, Alienware flubbed up two separate purchases, each over $25K and then wanted to charge us more money to make it right. Almost cost my company a huge contract. Alienware was well known at this time for swindling customers by charging them extra for the paint-jobs on hardware only to deliver items in the wrong color or not painted at all and then demand restocking fees and return shipping fees from customers in order to fix the problem. They also had a nasty practice of selling painted goods without proper deals with the peripheral manufacturers where the paint-jobs would void the manufacturer warranties. They would then leave the customers high and dry trying to get repairs or service on defective peripherals (or damaged by the reseller in the eyes of their hardware suppliers).

For individual end-user type purchases where you're buying a laptop or desktop and moving on with your life, they're not too bad. Overpriced, for sure, but hey you get that cool alienware system case for that premium you pay. Personally, I would never buy from them again due to what I know about them (and I have barely touched the surface here), even though it has changed for the better over the past couple years. And it's just way too much money for what you actually get, but so are the desktop systems from Dell or anyone else. We build all our PC's in house here and typically only deal with other PC vendors for notebooks.

it's about choice, something that Apple lacks.

I'll agree with that... The hardware configuration options for current Apple systems are truly dismal. Every system they offer is totally lacking in the graphics department (even the Mac Pro) and it's something I never would have expected from a company that has always been regarded as a tool for graphic artists.

Anyway, now that we've totally hijacked this thread and butchered it, I'll try to put it back on track... I'm still sticking by my 10/31 prediction for the new MBP release. Actually, I am somewhat hopeful for this next week, but still think 10/31 is the day.

that is no thread hijack, good stuff. That is my frustration right now as much as waiting for the core2duo. lack of choice/power with the GPU. I have all this money tied up in Apple software (Final cut studio, logic), much of which is GPU intensive. not to mention the work in Maya and live video triggering I do. there should be at least one high end notebook that excels in those areas with an option of a completely top end GPU.

then I will buy into the Porsche analogy....

What makes halloween so special out of all the tuesdays in October? I would think less people would pay attention to a product launch on such a holiday.

I'm DYIN' here. DYIN'.

C'mon, Steve Jobs. Take my money. You know you want it. Just GIMME MY C2D MBP. And then we can both walk away happy.

Deal?

Steve?

Hello?

Most North American retailers view Halloween (and the end of October) as the official start to holiday shopping. Apple has said that they will have the updateded notebook line available in time for the start of holiday shopping. It's not that there's anything special about Halloween for launching a new product, it just places the new product on the market in time to kick off the shopping season. ...That's all.

OTOH, I really doubt at this point that Apple is holding off on announcing the new systems just to time a specific date. I'm guessing that as soon as all the pieces fall together (current MBP stock levels, component purchases for new systems, manufacturing schedules, etc..) then we will get the announcement. And it will arrive anytime between now and about November 22. If they miss the Nov. 22 date (and Thanksgiving), then they may as well wait until next year at MWSF.

Well the refurb i ordered this morning has already shipped and is on its way to me. Est Delivery date is 10/10. My guess is it would 9/10 but we'll see.

I'm in the same boat there... As I transitioned all my video/animation work over to HD, I found myself switching to Final Cut Studio and Shake. For 3D I primarily use Lightwave and Modo, but also do Maya -- mostly to maintain compatibility with or to meet client demands/expectations/etc.. I have G5 quad workstations that all work wonderfully, but are very weak in the GPU department compared to my PC workstations. I was excited over the upcoming Mac Pro, but I actually held off buying one because the only decent graphics option they have for serious 3D or visualization work is the FX4500, but they want too much of a premium for it vs. what it sells for in PC land. Hopefully we'll see updated graphics options with the next Mac Pro update and quad-core CPUs as well, bringing the Mac Pro to an 8-core system. That would be great for my 3D work.

I'm eagerly awaiting the new MBP to see what it offers. However, I'm actually planning to not buy one! Shocking, I know, but unless it allows me to install and actually address and use a full 4GB of RAM and has a much more powerful GPU than the X1600, then I will use the new system release to my advantage and pick up a refurb or open box current model MBP for a steal and I'll use that until the folliwng MBP update arrives. I already picked up an MBP 2 weeks ago because I needed a notebook, and will hand it down to the wife with the next one I purchase.. I like the system a lot, but it just can't quite cope with the work I do.. The GPU is pretty weak, but it is usable, but I'm at the point now where the 32bit memory limit is killing me and I'm not going to go pay full price for a new notebook until 4GB usable is a reality.

the whole apple insider article for the macbook pro makes it seem as if it were just a drop in core 2 duo and no complete redesign. I just hope that we've been waiting for more than that.

Thats okay by me

Sure, a redesign would be great, but I would settle for a chip drop in .

I am personally hoping for a lightweight carbon fiber skin over a magnesium skeleton.

Hello?

Well, it was only a matter of time before Apple bumped up the MacBook Pro line to Core 2 Duos -- after all, we've seen laptop after laptop after laptop already packin' the Merom love. AppleInsider reports that anonymous sources have told them that within the next few weeks, Apple will make start production of Merom-powered notebooks in time for the holiday season. That said, there's no mention in their latest article of the MacBook getting the bump as well, but it makes sense that Apple would upgrade the higher-end products first. Still, even though we want to believe this rumor, we've been burned so many times before that we're, like, beyond jaded when it comes to Apple gossip.

I think we will see upgrades in both lines, MBP and MB, before the start of the holiday shopping season. The upgrades in the MBP will probably come first. With the MacBook being more of a consumer product it is more likely that one would purchase this computer as a gift for someone as compared to the MBP. While at the same time professionals want the best chip, now, when they need their computers. So the time table is: get the C2D MBP out ASAP and get the C2D out by the peak of the holiday shopping season.

Have we, the merom crowd, been burned by AppleInsider before? This very thread is based on one of their rumors if I remember correctly, updates by the holidays in both lines. It seems that this rumor is in agreement with the previous. AppleInsider's insider seems to know what is going on, hopefully.

Are there other people making music here ? What would they do ?
I would be really pissed to have to buy the much more expensive MBP just because MB lacks fw800...

greetings all,

this is my first post on these forums :) my last apple was an
apple IIe... the core 2 duo MBP will mark my return to apple

i have been working in pro audio environments for 7 years
currently cubase sx 3, reaktor 5 and ableton 5 are my
primary worktools

you would want the MBP for more reasons other than the FW800
the MB lack the guts to perform as a full blown audio workstation

first and foremost, you need a MBP with a 7200rpm hard drive
try working on a cubase project with 100+ tracks and you will
see that 5400 rpm will not cut it

your external hard drive would be happy with a FW800 but
i personaly would prefer an eSATA external drive connected
to an expresscard 34 eSATA card... 3 gigs vs 800 megs
plus the ability to RAID external hard drives in the future

if the new MBP come with eSATA then i will be a happier customer
because i will not have to purchase yet another peripheral ;)

the MB uses an integrated intel video card rather than a dedicated one

if anyone asks you to work with audio and video, you will be left
wishing you had gotten a MBP with a phat 256 meg graphics card

i am personaly looking forward to finaly having the ability
to triple boot windows/mac os/linux in single notebook

pro audio requires a MBP and you will be happy you got one :)

patiently waiting like everyone else now....

;)

Have you checked out the 8-Core Mac Pro Details Emerging Thread yet? I'm heavily into video compression work so like you will be buying the Dual Clovertown Mac Pro as soon as it ships.
