The trouble with this argument is AMD is not a "different CPU platform". Switching to AMDs just to escape the heat from lagging behind the latest C2D offerings is just like an ostrich hiding its head in the sand and hoping the danger will go away.
It wouldn't, even AMD's balls are getting toasted when Intel unveiled the Core which was drastically different from where they have been going. AMD has been sitting on its laurels for way too long, the last one Apple needs to team up with is them.
Besides with AMD comes a whole can of worms. I used to be quite an AMD fanboy even though I still prefer Intel systems, the latest C2D chips simply made it perfect. As you know AMD don't make their own chipsets, so what do you expect Apple to use for their Apple-AMD Macbook Pros? VIA chipsets? SiS? Some other stupid chip?
I have no issues with "no brand" solutions, except for the fact that stability wise they pale out BIG time to Intel's offerings. Switch to AMD and I will switch back to PCs so fast in less time than you can spell "MBP". Pure asinine.
Besides, AMDs run hotter than C2D offerings, check your facts first.

In reference to not jumping ship I think you will find that Apple may move back to using two chip vendors. (in this case they would continue with Intel for some of their computers and move to ,possibly, AMD for their notebooks) This is no different than when they were being supplied by both Motorala and IBM.
You are completely correct when you say that they wouldn't jump ship and I wasn't proposing a complete shift to AMD, my fault for not being clear on that.
I believe, as you have stated, that they are just starting to make money on the Intel side of things and may not have broken even yet.
