Someone should go into an Apple store and ask some questions about performance to the staff, I'd like to hear what they say. I'd imagine it would go something like...

You: I'm looking to buy the most powerful, maxed out notebook available.

Apple staff: Then you'll want the mighty 17" MacBook Pro sir!

You: I see that has a Core Duo chip, I've seen a lot of PC laptops with Core 2 Duo, how does the MacBook Pro hardware compare to those?

Apple staff: Oh right, yeah, well it's worse than those.

You: Oh, so the PC laptops outperform the Apple's best laptop in raw processing power?

Apple staff: Yeah, in raw processing power PC laptops outperform Macs in every single way.

Woooooooooooo, go Apple. Flex those mighty hardware muscles

Apple Staff: I may add... This is the fastest notbook you can take with you today, if you want anything faster you will be waiting weeks if not months from Dell etc & you will only get Windows...

there will be a lot of people saying "screw you Steve, I'm buying a Dell".

Although I agree with most of what you're saying, I can't say the same about that statement.

Mac people are way too loyal to their OS and for them to jump over to a PC is highly unlikely and irrational. It would literally be like downgrading to an antiquated OS.

But staying on topic, I really hope Apple is holding out to release something really grand, if not, we'll all be really disappointed. :(

yeah, because i like things that sit on my lap to be heavy, slightly fuggly and always always tacky. yea for dell xps... giving kids seizers one red/blue blinking light at a time. :D

You: Well, that's outright lies, as I saw Core 2 Duo Sony and HP machines in Best Buy. In fact, I'll go across the road to Best Buy and take one of those home today.

This is true, Best Buy stores have Sony and HP Core 2 Duo machines in stock, and have had for weeks.

Yes, but you CAN say that many potential switchers, who are thinking about buying their first Mac, will indeed be saying "Screw you Steve" right now, and choosing to go with C2D in Dell, HP or Sony machines.

Furthermore, while many Mac users are extremely loyal, there must be a significant amount that really wouldn't mind too much about switching back to Windows, particularly if the work they do relies mainly on performance.

I have thought about Wintel laptops a few times, but reality always brings me back. Here's what I mean.
The most secure version of Windows that I use is at both of my jobs. That's right - corporate Windows - constantly updated and patched.

Every other version of Windows I have used (usually at friend's houses) ALL have had some form of spyware/adware/viruses, etc. I know I'm smart enough to not download questionable things. I also know to have all forms of anti-malware software running, but let's be honest. There are freeware versions of anti-virus software, but depending on who you talk to, they may or may not be that good.
I DON'T think I should have to pay the typical Windows Anti-Virus fee to Norton's, McAfee, or MS itself (on Vista).
These things are not a thought on Mac OS X.

Please, do NOT reply to this with, "Well, I've been running Windows since 1935 and I've never had 1 virus."
Even if that were true...
* You are NOT the norm.
* It has been said that some forms of malware are almost impossible to find.

I'll wait as long as I have to.

Both my local Best Buy and CompUSA have 2.33GHz C2D systems on the shelf that I can take home TODAY. :p

True. Apple loyalists are what kept Apple afloat all those years until they hit the jackpot with iPod. But Apple has grown significantly in the past few years and much of the new user base is a more fickle one. I'd hate to see the Apple community lose so much of what it has gained in recent years because the hardware can't keep up with the rest of the industry.

But staying on topic, I really hope Apple is holding out to release something really grand, if not, we'll all be really disappointed. :(

I sure hope the wait is worth it. I'm anxious to give them my money, but first they'll have to show me a significantly improved (or significantly cheaper) product than what they're showing me now.

Screw Apple. What will probably happen is a small update with the C2D and then in January/Feb a total redesign with killers features etc....

I really hope you're wrong... I'd hate to finally pull the trigger on a new 17" merom-based MBP, after having waited so long for just a CPU refresh, only to have the real goodness released two months later at MWSF.

_Most_ people don't even need a G4, let alone G5, CD or C2D!

I'm currently working with a 1.67 GHz G4, and one could argue that it does everything I "need" but it's slow as hell, and I've already got software which will take advantage of a 64 bit CPU if it had one.

Outputting the podcast of the biochemistry lecture I gave this morning using Garage Band took longer than giving the lecture in the first place, and I'm constantly waiting for this beleaguered little powerbook to accomplish some CPU intensive task, so I really need a faster machine. But I'm not going to buy something that's not only already obsolete, but has been for months.

Apple needs to get a competitive pro notebook onto the market ASAP! I've been ready to buy since July!

While i agree with appliedvis... it has been the apple loyalist who have kept apple afloat until the ipod... but alot of customers today are buying macs just to match that ipod of theirs.. its been said before, and ill say it again, we the rumor site browsing crowd do make a small percentage of the smaller percentage of people who actually buy macs...

ps.. wasnt there a virus that was specific to macs maybe a year or two ago? i don't remeber exactly, but i recall someone saying apple wasnt as safe as they used to be

pps... its not happening today aye? no chance steve forgot to set his alarm and is running a little late???

Why hold the flagship Mac expo in January?

Why hold the flagship Mac expo in January, after the Xmas shopping season? If Apple were more savvy, they would move MWSF to late October. C'mon Apple, it's not to late to cancel the January Muscone Center reservation. And if the bastards give you a hard time about rescheduling for October 23, screw them -- just pitch a few tents in the Golden Gate Park...or better yet, come back to Boston. We miss you!

This has been an amazingly long delay. I think it's accented by the fact the C2D iMacs hit the street so early. Hell they're even on the SAVE Page already for less after only a month.

I sure hope Apple doesn't pull this kind of delay in adding Quad Core Clovertowns to the Mac Pro configure page after they ship next month. Sitting with the cash for the next great thing and not being able to swap the paper for a tool really blows when you really need it every day.

I really feel for all of you who are in a bind over this delay. :(

When I was at the mac store yesterday (my very first visit to a mac store by the way) the employee there told me he could take 200 bucks off the MBP for being a student. Do you guys think this applies to refurbs as well? That would bring it right into my price range I think.

The student discount is usually equal to the refrub discounts, so it might end up coming to the same thing. MIGHT.

Have You Looked At The RAVE Refurb Page Yet?

The refurb discount is more. Have you looked at the SAVE page at the online store yet? Lower right column big red SAVE tag is the link to it. Welcome. All the MBPs are available there for as little as $1549 up to $2399 for the top 17" model.

Well, I'm one of those "you-can't-pry-OS X-from-my-cold-dead-fingers" Mac loyalists. So, no. I may be frustrated, but I won't say "Screw you Steve."

Are there other Mac users who feel differently? Probably. But you know what? As much as I want Apple's bottom line to do well, I am real nervous about all the PC switchers around. I find more and more of them every month where I work.

One of the best things about the Mac OS is that it is rock solid. You turn it on. It stays on. No virus. No spyware. If Apple continues to entice the switchers of the world...how long before someone starts writing viruses for Mac? So from a certain perspective (a selfish one, granted...and not likely one that Apple would endorse :)) it isn't all bad if switchers switch back, or potential switchers, don't.
