The only thing I would change for the iMac right now is removing that Jay Leno chin. I don't like the shape and all, but sometimes, I like having the screen just above the F-keys of the keyboard. 5 love the design if the G4 4 Mac. That thing was killer, many stores have them, so they can just swing i around and show the costumer what they have ordered.
That "chin" is an homage to the original Macintosh design from 1984.

The proportions are not exact but the aesthetic reference is obvious. The Macintosh's heritage inspired the G5 and current iMac's design.

Here's The Deal

Wow, you have a lot of hate for your fellow non-Apple employees. I guess that's why you are NOT part of Apple's marketing team.

What's wrong with people speculating about different designs for Apple products? Am I an idiot if I like a particular color? How about if I say I'd like my next Mac to be that color?

I severely hope you don't work someplace where you have to talk to customers. Your attitude is the type of attitude that gives tech people a bad reputation.

Ok I'll save you from the fear of my lack of people skills by telling you honestly that the ONLY REASON I posted that comment in such a belligerent manner is because I just wanted to get involved in the conversation. I have posted many things in many forums before, and nodoby even involves people in the discussions, they just all make their little comments and that's it. So I made an outrageous comment to spark some replys, and it worked lol. Now in actuality I am amazing in marketing if I don't say so myself and human relations, I'm sure you wouldn't judge against that without knowing me. I know people have their oppinions and that's fine, but I've seen alot of ugly pics of concepts in here that I guarrantee Apple would never do. I really would like to see the iMac go widescreen like the Cinema Displays though.....am I alone in that people? Maybe just cause I'm a film maker.

Anyway, if I offended I apologize :) Friends?

I'd buy a black iMac, as long as it was flat/matte, not shiny plastic-fingerprints would show up too easily.

The chin is also necessary for the Power supply and speakers. You either have to have the chin, or it has to be thicker like the Sony Vaio LS, or it has to have a semi-separate display and body. Apple doesn't have to obey the rules of convention, but they do have to adhere to the laws of physics.

Ok, I dont want to get flamed so I will start off by saying a have no problem indorsing or supporting pruduct red But, I think a red iMac would burn my eyes. I just dont think solid red would look good with an iMac I cant stand the color ware version.

I agree. The most "red" I could see as appealing on an imac would be the apple logo being red, but that would not meet the "product red" requirements.

One word: DUST

Yes, the reason that we will never see a Black iMac is because of dust. Black computers, sitting on a desk for a week collect more dust and look awful.

Yes, white computer collect dust too, but it's not as noticable.

And that is the main reason why Apple will not be releasing a Black iMac.

Another reason is that white iMacs are much more visiable.

I really don't think those would be the main factors for Apple not releasing a black iMac...

You guys think if they release a black iMac if the peripherals (keyboard and mighty mouse) will be black also? When the black nano launched, they included white earphones, not black. Yuck.

Same thing can be said for white...

You do not want to see some of the keyboards we have in our uni's labs, god knows what is in the brown congealed paste...

Seeing the 2 machines side by side brings a tear to my eye, how far Apple has come in the last 20 years!

Seeing them next to each other reinforces what a tasteful job they do, completely contemporary, but with an obvious respect for the past.

There will be black

It only makes sense that there will be a black iMac.

The iMac will be/is, it seems, their product to converge computers and televisions. 20" --> 24". White --> black (fits in the living room now). 24" --> 30" / 40"? (big enough to qualify as a TV)

It's like a slow striptease act. Apple reveals its product direction one small step at a time. They gently and gradually lean us customers / fans in a certain direction and we adopt the incremental changes.

I for one will be let down if the next Imac update is simply that black paint job like the Macbook, I really want to see something new and inspiring, a whole new look, to go with the new OSX. I definitely would like to see the 30/40" imac in the living room.

I do have some concrete inside info on the topic.
1. It won't come soon enough
2. It won't be cheap enough
3. It won't include one little thing we want
4. People won't be able to complain enough
5. I will buy it

PS If I don't have something with multitouch soon I'll....... ok I'll just keep waiting.

A (Product) RED product is not required to be red. However, all of the (Product) RED item's I've seen have had a highly visible reference to RED.

BTW, I agree that an iMac RED would only be attractive if the red was confined to the logo.

I'd love it if they went back to the G3 iMac design, and colors. But with updated technology. EDIT: Actually , the eMac is petty close... being that back!

This place will sell you one in any color. Or you can send them yours and they will color it. (Any Color)

Yes, it's been mentioned a few times already in this thread. But they charge way too much for what they're doing.

I think most people wouldn't care whether it was a little thicker or had a chin, but when pushed would opt for the chin of the two. I can see it becoming less and less prominent as time goes on and screen sizes get bigger. This will make them more aesthetic for the living areas they are slowly migrating into. Would be nice if all iMacs from 24" upwards too also had ATSC tuners in them, (DVB-T in European models). Apple would be advised to also develop a remote that was as simple as the current one, but was touch screen and changed depending on function. Select TV and it refreshes to channel, volume and record functions. DVD gives play step, skip etc. Only works in Front Row, then defaults back to volume skip and menu buttons.

The Sony LA1 for example was very similar in design, a little thinner around the edges and thicker in the middle, but still not much more than the iMac. There was no foot and the screen was surrounded by transparent plastic which served little purpose other than standing it up. One major downside I saw with it though was the external power supply. Unless it's sitting on a desk with places to hide adapters, you're going to see a big black box near your machine.

All in all, the iMac still wins hands down in all-in-one design. I would prefer them not to refresh the look for the time being and maybe colours are all we need to satisfy us, along with added features and/or updated guts.

I remember one of the patents we saw before iPhone was released was for an identical device to the phone, where screen layout changed according to function selected, as you described. One of the proposed functions was a remote control. I really hope a remote similar to this is released to complement the AppleTV, scrolling through our music on a handset is much preferable to turning on your tv just to listen to a song.

Also, including tuners in a large iMac, accessed through Front Row would make me a happy shopper.
