As far as the other stuff, get your facts straight. The one button mouse had nothing to do with "research", that was simply Steve Jobs' stubborness. And FireWire was THE standard for serious multi-media editors for over a decade. It helped change the course of movie history. And your Ping reference makes zero sense. It wasn't a new standard that anyone was forced to adapt. Just an idea that didn't work. It happens.

Have you read Becoming Steve Jobs?

Now let me see you charge your phone and listen to music ;)
Also, the fact that the 3.5mm headphone jack can swivel round with out losing connection was a nice advantage to the 3.5mm headphone jack, but this thing sticks out like a sore thumb and is bound to snap at the point where the lightning connector meets the phone.

There may or may not be a smart connector on the back for wireless charging, so that answers the listening and charging simultaneously part, and the 3.5mm headphone jack was just as awkward and prone to breaking, probably even more than the lightning connector.

I agree this is terrible design. But I want to trust they made some changes for the final release.
I can't wait to see how they introduce these in September ...
"the most reliable connection for music ever"

Bad idea to remove the ubiquitous 3.5mm audio jack that works on laptops, desktops, automobiles, music players, mobile phones, even the in-seat audio connections on airlines.

Millions of people have spent good money on high quality headphones and earbuds that use the 3.5mm standard to be left out in the cold.

Those who will not upgrade are suited to stay behind and be drowned in obselecense

I disagree. The first one is free.
They didn't give free 30 pin to Lightning adapters when the new phones switched ports. Why would they? Some people won't need one at all. Some will want 3 or 4.

The iPhone 7 will include lightning earbuds, but will not include an adapter. Final answer.

You upgrade to a new technology when it's needed, othewise you're just one of those guys that buy cool new toys that fail. Some "obsolent" stuff is widely used, and will be used, because there is no need for replacement. Maybe the day of replancement will come, but only when the environment is ripe for that change.

Apple removed the 3.5 inch floppy disk. They're doomed!
Apple removed the CD/DVD drive. They're doomed!

I think we might want to wait to see how this all turns out after the phone is actually released before we all panic. On the other hand we seem to like to panic early. Go ahead and panic. Samsung will be copying Apple again in 18 months or so.
Good call!

"Where the f- Is my adapter? Sh-t now I can't listen to music with all the ***** headphones I have!!!"

(ME with an iPhone 7)

If only there was a way to attach the adapter to the set of headphones you use and keep them there. Maybe someday, science will create a way to do that. Also, I suppose you think the charger cord does the same as well because what if it dies and you don't have your cord? How can you possibly listen to your music on a dead phone?

Don't wanna wait for science to do that, just as long Apple will have that is better chance.

At least you are trying out some different options... but it appears that you replace your headphones often? Why is that?
Often? All of the brands (Sony, Motorola, Panasonic) crapped after a couple days of mountain biking or skiing. I switched to JayBird after I returned the Sony earbuds.

The Freedoms were purchased in the Spring of 2012, they are used for outdoor activities now, and work as well as they did when new. The BlueBuds were purchased in January of 2014 and are used for the gym.

Most likely will not get the X3's until December.

Millions of people have spent good money on high quality headphones and earbuds that use the 3.5mm standard to be left out in the cold forced to buy an adapator.
Corrected this for you. There is a difference between making it impossible to keep using their high quality headphones and being forced to buy an adaptor (that will cost a small fraction of the price of the high-quality headphones).

This state of self sabotage started with the 2014 mac mini being only dual core, that everyone was waiting on. Somehow this just spiraled out of control to this point. It's so bizarre and self defeating that you convince yourself there is a positive endgame to this and that the minds at Apple are genius and are leading up to something amazing for us.

I mean they have to be, right?

Apple removed the 3.5 inch floppy disk. They're doomed!
Most never used the the floppy drive for months/years before the removal
Apple removed the CD/DVD drive. They're doomed!
Most accessed the CD/DVD drive once every 6 months

I, and many others, use the 3.5mm plug multiple times a day.

This is not equivalent at all, no matter how many times you attempt to link them.

This is not a dead format/function, this is highly used, by millions.

There are enough older (I don't want to say old, 2008 isn't old) vehicles on the road in your scenario that I'm sure someone will quickly make an adapter that hooks to both your Aux cable and lightning cable, you'll just leave that in your car and now you only have one cable to connect to the phone rather than two. My vehicles have bluetooth but I also dock my phone sometimes if I used the phone GPS rather than the system built into the infotainment system so it charges while the GPS drains the battery.

Good point on headphones in the coffee shop. My mobile computing device these days is an iPad Pro 12.9 so I still have lightning (I've all but retired my rMBP). Lightning headphone to TRS device may not be the simple adapter that the reverse is. People in that situation may have to stick with TRS headphones and use an adapter to the phone.

Times they are a changing I suppose. Your suite is much better suited than mine, but, I guess I'll live.

Oh you force me to use one pair of headphones unless I pay them more? I have a pair at home (which I also bring in the car if needed etc) and one at work.

Also, I suppose you think the charger cord does the same as well because what if it dies and you don't have your cord? How can you possibly listen to your music on a dead phone?

You're talking of a completely different thing. OF course the main device has to be functional, and for that reason it charges all night long. That's a NEED, and there's no workaround. Lighting headphones? There's a workaround, called a worldwide multi-company standard 3.5mm jack

WTF apple! why can't the phone just come with high quality BT headphones?.
Are you serious? Did you think about that question for even 5 seconds before angrily!!! typing it out?

It is because current "high quality BT headphones" retail for about $100, and the BT EarPods they're rumored to be working on (with no cord connecting the L & R) will be even more.
