The subject is not ridiculous. Evidently Apple doesn't care about usability any longer.

Then go to Android. If removing the port is that important to you, go buy a phone that has it. And then when Android phones start to remove it you can move to Ubuntu Touch or Windows Mobile. Then if they remove it, you can buy an older phone and hope it works well.

LOOK - 90% of iPhone users wont give a flying chuck about the lack of 3.5mm.
Given how much controversy this topic tends to generate even on this predominantly Apple-friendly forum, I have my doubts.
The waterproof properties (not meantioned much) is a big plus.
As others have proven, it's possible to build water-resistant phones with a headphone jack. Unless Apple finds some way to beam brainwaves, phones will always have to have openings for microphones and speakers anyway.

So, basically, you want to stick with a standard forever because its a standard?

I want the new standard to evolve naturally when it's the right time.
Does apple want to push a standard in headphones? They own Beats. Show some balls and stop all the 3.5mm production and push lighting only headphones. Come on.
All that I can do without the 3.5" I can do it already with my 3.5" jack hole. It doesn't add anything.

Yes sir. I am glad you are here to help me figure that out.

Maybe, but the other companies are unlikely to use a proprietary connector (most other players than Apple are pushing for USB-C audio).

Apple is likely pushing for wireless, something they have pretty much been pushing for over a decade.

i understand having a 3.5 to lightning adapter, but having lightning headphones is just embarrassing even for someone as greedy as apple. hope they don't do this.

Do you realize that Samsung has the lead in marketshare and if they decide to go USB-C audio (or some other sort of standard) the industry will move in that direction because of the #s involved?
I still would have an issue with the USB-C connector as it is as pointless, but I would have less heartburn over the alleged lightning connection.

The Lightning connector is one of the most robust connectors I've ever used. In contrast, Ive had a lot of 3.5mm jacks and plugs fail over the years.
I've had two APPLE lightening cables fail, after babying them. The over-exposed metal in the connector frayed, and became useless. I've never had this happen in a 30 pin connector. But I HAVE also had this happen in cheap mini-USB connectors.

The last time a 3.5mm connector failed, was about 20 years ago, in a $5 transistor radio.

So your experience and mine are completely opposite. Sorry, I'll go with my experiences, over yours, and be unhappy with this this "innovation" from Apple.

I use the 3.5mm connector multiple times a day. This is a MAJOR inconvenience for me, and I'll be forced to vote with my wallet. Apple doesn't seem to want me as a customer anymore. I can accept that. Doesn't mean I'm happy about it, as windows and android are inferior for my wants/needs, but if Apple doesn't care to produce hardware that meets my requirements, I pretty much have no alternatives.

These forums are not predominantly Apple friendly.

No it isn't, but it is lossy and has tons of latency and unusable for some specific use cases I have. Lightening IS proprietary.

And you're assuming the earpods with lightning aren't just the fallback measure. Apple pushes wireless at all times whenever possible. I also don't know what you're talking about when it comes to 'tons of latency'. Also, most music is lossy.

On a tech point of view, yeah I agree. But it's obvious that given the # of samsung devices whatever they decide will be the determining factor, just because vendors will love to sell on that market-share. (Unless Samsung does something really idiotic)
