I actually believe that the adapter to use Lightning headphones on 3.5mm sources will be even simpler and cheaper than the the reverse.
I don't see how that would be possible, because the Lightning connector does not have pins for analog audio.

Oh you force me to use one pair of headphones unless I pay them more? I have a pair at home (which I also bring in the car if needed etc) and one at work.

You're talking of a completely different thing. OF course the main device has to be functional, and for that reason it charges all night long. That's a NEED, and there's no workaround. Lighting headphones? There's a workaround, called a worldwide multi-company standard 3.5mm jack

Hey, you're the guy who apparently can't keep track of an adapter. I'm not making anyone do anything. Hook it up to the phone, then. Keep it hooked up to the phone at all times when you're not charging it. Happy?

Also, the 3.5mm headphone jack isn't going to be around in five years when it comes to mobile devices. Apple isn't alone in removing it.

Maybe there will probably be some sort of case you'll have the option to buy that interfaces to the lightning port similar to battery cases which would split the lightning port into a charging port and a headphone jack... maybe it could double up to also be a battery case and have an odd hump on the back like the current one?

Nonetheless, it would probably be hideous and make the phone unnecessarily longer. Probably also cost an arm and a leg if Apple made it or cheap and poor quality/design if a third party made it. Just my hypothesis :)

LOOK - 90% of iPhone users wont give a flying chuck about the lack of 3.5mm.
The waterproof properties (not meantioned much) is a big plus. The number of iPhones taken in to an apple store with water damage in apple stores is a fair amount.
The other 10% will get a free adapter for them to listen on their expensive earphones.
I really dont see the issue here!

Yeah because apparently apple devices look so stunning with adapters.

It won't be about making it thinner. If it was about thin, look at the iPod touch. It is both thinner and has the 3.5mm jack.

I read somewhere the headphone jack was preventing the phone from getting thinner. Ipod's don't have phone parts.

I've been firmly on the fence about everything we've heard about the iPhone 7. As a musician, I place a fairly high priority on being unencumbered in listening to material on my phone. It is looking like it's increasingly likely that the use of the lightning port for headphones will not be mated to a method of charging by some other non-lightning means.

That's simply infuriating to me. And - get this - it's actually a deal breaker. I know, so many talk the talk about abandoning the iPhone, but I am willing to walk the walk. I will wait until the iPhone 7's official announcement before finalizing my decision, but since my contract's expiring this fall, I'm fully anticipating purchasing a Nexus device instead of a new iPhone. Further, the 6P is $0 from my phone provider; I'll save a couple of hundred bucks in the process.

In no way does the inconvenience of migrating some of my iCloud information to Google's cloud suite outweigh the inconvenience of not having the 3.5mm headphone jack on my phone.

Shame on you, Apple! While you may think the elimination of the 3.5mm jack is innovation or progress, I only see a reversion to the pre-smartphone era of awful proprietary earbuds bundled with flip phones. Except you could charge and listen simultaneously with those.
If you're a musician listening to material for review, you shouldn't be using a 3.5mm analog audio source from the iPhone DAC... The audio quality through an external DAC is far superior.

Correct... The same history repeats itself.

- Apple removes stuff
- People hate change, (not everyone does)
- Eventually those who upgrade will get used to it if u can't buy iPhone 6s anymore from Apple
- People get used to the "new toy"
- Time to bicker about the *next* thing that we all miss.

The enjoyment of MR :D

Like I said... the first one is free.

Honestly, this subject is ridiculous. Why care what the device looks like with an adapter? Aren't people always slamming Apple for focusing on looks over function? Then they come out with a functional thing and people bash it for appearances. And the people bashing this decision are coming up with difference unique scenarios anyway. Can't have it attached ro one pair of headphones because they have several. Can't have it coming out of the phone because it looks bad. Oh, and they'll lose it. And next is maybe an adapter allergy,

Not at all actually. First of all, I believe that it was around 2010, maybe 2011. At that time networking was already quite prevalent and you could still buy a Superdrive.
While it's true that they removed the superdrive, that was from desktop only. It took them another 4 years or five to remove the Optical drive to the portable devices. For the iMac, which stays in the same place for months or years, attaching an external drive is not a problem. If you do really need it, yeah get it external and keep it where you put it the first time. For Laptops? It was different as they needed portability and having more items to carry around would've defeated the purpose of a laptop. Of course in 2015 (I believe) they removed the optical drive from laptops including the MBP. Why? It's truly obsolete, with the Cloud, AirDrop and wifi techs everywhere not having it is truly painful. Yet, THEY waited until the problem solved itself. An iPhone is 100% portable, and needs to be flexible. Having an extra dongle is problematic. Forcing to use one type of earbuds which is not compatible with a standard, it's problematic. Forcing to use more expensive items, bluetooth, instead of giving the possibility to buy $1 earbuds from the local Chinese store, it's problematic. This without even mentioning that my Family's earbuds and all that we use for listening music that I got from and for all the devices you see in my signature will be rendered 100% useless. What they're doing now is the equivalent of removing the Optical Drive in 1995.
This whole thing is really going to be rough on you and your family. Apple should genuinely consider halting the forward march of technology and put the kibosh on this lark.

Hey, you're the guy who apparently can't keep track of an adapter.

Oh my, and they call me an Apple Fanboy.... I don't WANT to keep track of an adapter. I should not NEED to keep track of an adapter for something that is so standard that's is not even funny. I should not NEED an adapter for using something that Apple gave me since the first iPod (earbuds/earpods) and that is used by everyone else in the world of music/car/entertainment/computer/television business, and that can be so cheap that it's almost unbeatable.

I'm not making anyone do anything. Hook it up to the phone, then. Keep it hooked up to the phone at all times when you're not charging it. Happy?

No. Do I really have to keep a wire hooked up to my phone because they want to get rid of a ... hole? This is not real. They remove A HOLE and you tell me to make my phone "bigger" because of the nature of their change I need an adaptor and/or to keep my headphones on all the time? No, you can't be serious.

Also, the 3.5mm headphone jack isn't going to be around in five years when it comes to mobile devices. Apple isn't alone in removing it.

Yeah sure.

I am ready for Apple to move on to the external camera!

I'm 100% on board with this change and I think it's a step in the right direction in regards to audio. RIP 3.5mm jack, it was nice knowing you. Expect Samsung to follow suit as well, as they always do.

This whole thing is really going to be rough on you and your family. Apple should genuinely consider halting the forward march of technology and put the kibosh on this lark.

It's not rough. IT's stupid. There is no technological improvement. Explain me the tech breakthrough considering that with my iPhone 5S/SE/6+ I can:
1) Use earbuds
2) USe BT headphones
3) Use lighting cable headphones
4) Attach speakers

Removing the 3.5" doesn't change the above except removing #1 (and part of #4 if they're not BT). Where's the improvement?

The subject is not ridiculous. Evidently Apple doesn't care about usability any longer.

Having said all that,, Apple does like to remove 'round things' to replace them with 'flat' things' in order to make phone thinner.

Yeah sure.

So, basically, you want to stick with a standard forever because its a standard?

So to summarise this post so far;
- most folk are bitchin' that :apple: are removing the 3.5mm jack
- some folk agree with the removal
- some folk can't believe where the EarPods DAC allegedly is due to already shoddy Lightning Connectors fraying.
- some folk are ranting about how pants EarPods are
- most folk say they'll boycott an iPhone 7
- some folk don't care
- some folk are comparing this to :apple: removing legacy tech from products
- others (myself included) don't believe this to be the same.

Personally I think :apple: will do whatever. I don't think they'll just include a dongle as an option, I can see their battery hump case being remodified to include a headphone jack for those that want it. If they decide to remove the 3.5mm, I wouldn't like it, as it'll make an iPhone an even more expensive piece of kit if having to buy a more expensive case along side it.
I *might* forgive them if they use the lighting port to output usb3 speeds as I still can't believe the time it takes a 128GB to fully sync under usb2 speeds, along with the new BT codec such as LDAC, that might go someways to forcing me to upgrade & buy a new case, my non-bluetooth cans will stay the same.
