Apple doesn't give a f$ck about pure market share, they care about selling to influencers and profit. They dominate Samsung in both areas.

Oh yes, Apple doesn't care about marketshare. Providers of such a widespread gadget such as whatever uses a 3.5" jack? They do care. If you produce headphones, and the company with 22% of the marketshare (and increasing) and the other one with 15% go to two different standards, which one would you follow ? This without even considering that Samsung would probably go to an open standard so that all the other companies (another 50% of the marketshare) can adapt it.

"The industry" has followed Apple multiple times before, and it will here as well.

And "The industry" hasn't followed Apple multiple other times before.

Sound like you have two cables coming out of the iPhone for listening in the car.
You could probable get away with one cable? I have denson cradle 7 or 8 years old 30 pin male. so I have a 30 pin female to 30 pin male and a 30 pin female to lightning adapter - iPhone 6 - BOSE - Nissan Murano Denson cradle
cheers
I'm using one cable for listening to music in the car via the 3.5mm. The other cable is the Lightning port used for charging the phone.
Thanks for your suggestion but all this talk of 30 pin males has gone over my head.

Can't I make do with my 3.5mm jack at the bottom of my phone Apple ..

You're the one adding the adapter.

The design will use BT or dedicated wired headphones. Good design.

The adapter is part of your choice to stick with old headphones. You can't blame your choices on the designer.

Oh, remove a common function to remove a hole. That's good design then, considering that I can do everything else already. yes yes, good design.

So often we see naysayers scoff at Apple when they make it their responsibility to break with the past and move forward to newer technology only for competitors to copy Apple's moves shortly afterwards. Then those same naysayers all quietly fade from the limelight because they reluctantly accept that Apple were actually right! I believe this will be another example of that phenomenon.

What the naysayers usually fail to realise is that it's not about this one product decision, it's about all the future decisions, many of which Apple will already have made, that the removal of the 3.5mm socket enables. They may choose to share some of that thinking when (if) they announce the removal of the socket as expected. Perhaps we should all just calm down and wait until that time.

Personally I think it's a great idea to get rid of the 3.5mm socket because I never actually use it. I keep my earbuds in my bag but far prefer my Backbeat Fit bluetooth earphones. I would be delighted if Apple actually stopped shipping earbuds with the iPhone and just reduced the price of the phone so I can spend my money on whatever suits my needs. I think that's unlikely though because the white earbuds remain iconic and reinforce the Apple branding.

In any event, let's just wait for the official announcement before we all decide if the sky is truly falling or not...

Did Jony die??
This is inacceptabel. It will cause a lighting gate.. the connector will break easily.. and worse.. the connection in your iphone will also break from all the pressure..

Do you even read any opposing opinions on this thread? There are other real use cases other than yours.

So I will have to pay $800 for the phone + $50+ for the headphones/earbuds. Let's remove that damn hole then Apple! yay!!!!

NO, the fast charge bluetooth earbuds will be FREE in the "7" box!

Good design for the product, yes.

Might not be good for you.

You're just one person.

Your posts aren't going to change what Apple does.

Bad idea to remove the ubiquitous 3.5mm audio jack that works on laptops, desktops, automobiles, music players, mobile phones, even the in-seat audio connections on airlines.

Millions of people have spent good money on high quality headphones and earbuds that use the 3.5mm standard to be left out in the cold.

I could not agree more. This really sucks.

This is exactly what I would have expected, to be honest.

I was very, very cautiously optimistic about a free adapter or even (snowballs chance in hell) Bluetooth buds being packaged in.

Oh well. I sound like a broken record but I've not been given a compelling reason to upgrade. I've only thus far seen reasons not to.

lol fake, he never shows the full earpods cable where it meets the lightning connector and sound is off as well.

I don't understand how you guys at MR didn't consider the most basic check up on stuff being fake like seeing the full product before posting nor even mentioning it on the post. I understand its macRumors, but this needs to be mentioned.

Ahh, the "Let them Eat Cake" line or reasoning. This isn't a never user floppy drive, nor a very infrequently used cd-rom drive, this is something used everyday by millions.

You don't use them, great. Millions of other do. What do you do, when you run our of battery on your headphones? What do you do on a plane? Does every speaker and every electronic devise have bluetooth, and do they have your headset synced? Do they ever forget your sync settings, and require you to setup again?

I've experienced all of these issues with bluetooth, which is why I use wired earphones. I plug something into 3.5mm at least a dozen times a day.

The main difference is that I would not be delighting in Apple removing bluetooth, if no better alternative existed. And right now, there is honestly not a better alternative.

Daily earphone charging, and HOPING you don't run out of juice is a losing proposition.

Perhaps since App$e knows this is going to be a down year for iPhone sales, they are testing the waters with removing the jack. There will definitely be some blow-back as we are already seeing.

Don't get me wrong, I've tried bluetooth headphones, but I found daily charging of yet another device, to be a pain. being out and about, and running out of juice on the bluetooth headphones is a pain. Navigating so many bluetooth readers, is a pain. Having one car steal the Bluetooth signal on statup, is a pain. All of these inconveniences disappear with the ultimate convenience of a 3.5mm earphone.

Until they may bluetooth headphones MUCH better, this is a no-op for me.

It's honestly not comparable, how more convenient the 3.5mm option is - TO ME. Your usage is obviously different. This is an amazing step back. And I'll vote with my wallet.
Sure, Bluetooth will not appeal to everyone (even when putting its costs aside) but bundled Lightning earphones and optional adaptors won't require users of the next iPhone to use Bluetooth or re-buy costly higher-end Lightning headphones. You might consider the 3.5 mm plug to be vastly superior to Bluetooth but that gulf is clearly much smaller when you compare the 3.5 mm plug to bundled Lightning earphones (if you currently use the bundled ones) or consider the extra money and bulk of adding a Lightning to 3.5 mm adaptor.

If you switch to Android over a $20 adaptor, then switching to Android over a $150 surcharge (when getting the 128 GB iPhone vs getting a 128 GB micro-SD card for an Android phone) should have driven you over already a long time ago (and that is without taking into account even before looking at the storage issue, you could have gotten a fairly similar Android phone noticeably cheaper). Assume for a second that Apple had offered a micro-SD card slot in iPhones all along and then would remove it on the next model. Wouldn't that have been a similar (and financially even larger) move that should people turn off in regard to the iPhone? There are differences between these two 'features' but the biggest one is loosing something you had before vs never having something in the first place. The former registers much more heavily with most people.

not everything works/gets copied in the end, look at firewire and other stuff as well.

what is the problem here? you will get a FREE adapter for your high end earphones in the box.
Plus the "7" will resist water - a major problem in the apple store with returns.
