I've been waiting a while now for an ATV update - if the remote is the same, I may grab this. I'm always making mistakes using the other remote, it makes me feel old ;)

Until Apple locks out 3rd party remotes and also releases a new remote for gen 6 Apple TV Pro.

Apple is interested in integrating with existing entertainment hardware I think, hence the basic controls were always accessible with other remotes. But you are right, never say never!

The Apple TV remote is honestly the worst invention Apple invented. Seriously bad user experience design. Too much overthinking, not enough practicality.

Hey Apple: Buttons were invented for a reason. USE THEM.

Nothing beats the crap mouse the first iMac shipped with. But this is close for sure.

Best Buy and Walmart both carry the One for All Streaming remote for $24.99. Also controls a sound bar and TV.

I don’t know if it’s any good, I’ve never used one.

I never use the physical remote. I use the remote app on my phone. It doesn’t have volume controls. I use my TV remote for that.

FYI, if your ATV/TV/AVR are all hooked up and working with ARC (i.e., where the remote can control the volume "through" the Apple TV), then, if you're using the iPhone Remote app, the phone volume controls will actually control the ATV volume :)

Oops, this was already covered:

You can use the iPhone volume buttons while the Apple TV remote app is open to change volume.

Yes! I treat the Apple remote like a baby making sure I dont make accidental touches or even I picked it up right. Sometimes physical buttons are better.

Of course, it doesn’t have to be one of those remotes with hundreds of tiny buttons.

So... I take it you’re a fan of the MBP Touchbar as well?
Why in the world does someone have to like both? That makes zero sense.

Not poo-pooing on others experiences just a take on my own... but I absolutely love the Apple TV remote, it has spoiled me for all other remotes. My only complaint is its fragility... which is a pretty big complaint. You should be able to drop any remote from a meter at least and not even give a second thought about if it will be OK. Not so with the Apple remote, it bothers me a little that I have to be careful not to dop it.

The people who love the Apple TV remotes never buy couches .... there I said it 🤪

The 2019 nVidia shield series remotes are fantastic. Sadly they need to do a firmware update to fix a volume adjustment speed issue...... I get how they missed it for certain home theatre receivers, but man it’s annoying.

In regards to the Apple TV remote, nothing screams form over function like having to search the couch twice a day for a remote, having picked up the remote upside down in the dark just to watch the OSD come up and move the play head to a part of a show that spoils the episode, and how we didn’t get a find my remote function in tvOS is well beyond my scope of understanding.

The Apple TV is due for a refresh, I hope the same “listening to our customers” department they had with the 16” MacBook Pro got to invade the remote design department at Apple.

The Apple TV remote is perhaps the best example I can think of as far as Apple choosing form over function. It really is trash and I hope they revamp it with the next revision of ATV.

I wrote my whole reply and there you go summing up my thoughts in 2 sentences 🤣

Really, the Apple Remote has two major issues:
1 - It gets lost all the time. If it had a little speaker and other Apple devices had a "find my remote" function, this wouldn't be as much of a problem.
2 - In the dark, you can't tell if you're touching the touch sensitive top of the remote or you're holding it upside down and you're touching the in-sensitive bottom. This could be fixed by either adding something that faintly glows in the dark or feels different when you're holding it one way or the other. Or make both ends touch sensitive and use an accelerometer or other heuristics to know which end to accept touches on and which side is in the palm and to reject touches from.

Making a remote with so many buttons seems like a step sideways, not forward.

I honestly really like the Siri remote, except for the price (the wagging tail of my lab mix sent a whole Frappuccino onto my first remote and it never recovered). Scrubbing is soooooo nice on them!

The Appletv remote is the greatest ever. Simple, easy to operate, gets it done. I hate those legacy remotes with all the buttons that you can't see in the dark, and practically have to study just to find a function. It is nice that you can use a conventional remote with AppleTV, I guess, for those who don't like the easy to use one

I am not monolingual and I often watch movies in languages other than English. Siri is limited to the system language, so if I want to watch, "Jongens" or "Nordzee Texas" or "Alles auf Zucker" or "Juste une question d'amour" or "Die Heute Show" Siri is less than useless. That is probably why there is no Siri on the Swiss remote, because they watch movies in five languages. I can only wonder how Hispanics in the USA cope with the Apple Remote.

I keep the Apple TV remote inn a basket on the other side of the room. I can't pick it up without using it, I can't tell its orientation without looking, or turning on the lights, or accidentally using the touch pad, I can't pick it up off the table without taking my eyes off the TV screen, and I can't scrub (when I'm not doing it by accident) without going too far. It is a disaster. I use an RCA universal remote which has buttons I can find and use in the dark, and it even has a programming code for the Apple TV. Putting the Apple TV in a place that can receive IR signals is not a problem. I have been giving Apple feedback for a long time asking for an alternative remote for the Apple TV. Apple isn't listening, but at least someone is.

Does this work with Firestick 4K? If so I may give this a shot since I lost the remote and TV remote’s home button doesn’t map properly so I have to keep pressing back to exit apps.

Get a case

Instead of spending $30 dollars now, I’d wait to see how the 2020 Apple TV handles the remote and apply the $30 there if it fixes it.

Exactly how I feel. :) I usually watch movies on my projector in the dark, and those complicated remotes with dozens of buttons are just terrible. Just give the Apple remote a chance folks, it's great once you get used to it.

Why not program AppleTV to recognize any old IR remote you may have?

Since we have Dish network, we set a random VCR code to Aux button then taught AppleTV extra buttons, but you could use any random remote for this.

While I do agree that the touchpad is waaayyy too sensitive, even with tweaking, the best way we found to avoid the whole “which way am I holding it?” issue, is to buy the Apple Remote Loop for $12.99. It really should come with it in the box.
