Apple is gonna lay waste to Intel and the rest of the PC industry. Hard to see how Apple does NOT double its market share in 3-5 year time
If somehow macOS has larger software library than on X86 then maybe. Otherwise, Mac is still just going to be creativity industry’s go-to choice plus a few other niches here and there.
We will see in next year or so.

It will defiantly be interesting to see just how far they can take their technology, and how long they can stay ahead of the Windows space. Intel is moving into efficiency cores with I think their upcoming processor but who knows if that will be able to compete with what Apple has already shipped.
Linus speculated that their chips would be good enough that there would be one more update of the intel Mac Pro. Though how well Apple is able to scale M1 to a desktop chip will probably dictate what happens there. There is still enough pro software plugins slacking off that Apple Silicon transition though that keeping the intel Mac Pro around a bit longer could be ideal even if it risks rewarding software developers for being late to the game.

That doesn't make ANY sense !

They've already over-shot their existing market by a wide margin !

The M1 Pro & M1 Max are over-kill for 99.9% of Apple's existing customer base !

I suspect what we're hearing about now is the 911 GT3 version, good for press coverage, but NOT a volume driver !
Do you REALLY think software developers can't come up with ways to use all that power?

In my experience, there is no amount of power that is ever too much for software developers.

Rather, computing power is a bottle neck that once removed or significantly eased, will usher in a new generation of apps, services, and possibly even devices.

That's the exciting part. That's where Apple is headed. LFG!

Cool, a $40 paywall to read the article...

...second-generation Apple silicon chips using an enhanced version of TSMC's 5nm process, and the chips will apparently contain two dies, which can allow for more cores.

So still multiple SoCs put together (SiP, System in Package; or MCM, Multi Chip Module)...?

Apple is planning a "much bigger leap" with its third-generation chips, some of which will be manufactured with TSMC's 3nm process and have up to four dies, which the report says could translate into the chips having up to 40 compute cores.

You would think by the time Apple gets to a third-gen Mn Pro/Max-series SoC, they would have more cores than the rumored MCM arrays will already have...?

Yeah, I am saying MCM now instead of SiP, because that is what AMD & NVidia are moving to with their GPUs, MCMs...

Meanwhile, the report says the next Mac Pro will use a variant of the M1 Max chip with at least two dies, as part of the first generation of Apple silicon chips.

That has been the rumor for awhile, dual & quad M1 Pro/Max SoCs for the Mac Pro lineup; but I think Apple just might have the M2 Pro/Max SoCs ready to preview at WWDC 2022; with M2 Pro/Max MacBook Pro laptops, Mac minis, & 27" iMacs available after an October 2022 Mac Event, and the Mac Pro lineup (Mac Pro tower, Mac Pro Cube, & possible 30" or 32" iMac Pro) available December 2022...

Intel, x86, and Microsoft did not dominate the market because they were always faster or more economical.
In fact there have been more than one occasion where there were better, faster, cheaper alternatives and yet it barely affected them.
I am happy for Apple and want them to do well, but if you believe this will destroy Intel and "PC" then you must be new here.
Which is fine. But it ain't gonna happen unless Apple opens up. Apple will never open up again.

As an iOS Developer, it's frustrating that we don't get much mileage out of these new CPUs.

Swift debugging is still *excruciatingly* slow compared to Objective C, big storyboards still take over ten seconds to beach ball when you even think about them, and incremental builds (99% of my builds) are I/O bound, not CPU (this has been the case for years).

With Intel apparently also planning on using n3 we will see what happens

With the exception of gaming, macOS surpassed Windows a long time ago. C-level, developers, creatives, and scientists all use Mac.

Great.

Now get your software house in order, Apple.

All this power tethered to buggy OS releases, hidden functionality interfaces because your designers like clean screen shots, and neglected or flat-out-crappy first apps makes your silicon a Pyrrhic victory.

The better way to look at it is in 5 years or so the baseline supported Mac will be a M1 with 8GB of ram. And the baseline supported PC will be a core i3 with 4GB of ram. If you are a developer, you will then be able to target a potential customer base with more features and expect better performance. Software may not take full advantage of it now, but the possibilities are greatly expanded for the future.

Future Macs will also use 1nm with up to 80 cores. Then after that, they move on to -1 nm chips.
That would be antimatter.

"No one will ever need more than 64k of RAM."

Note: When Gates said that, he was talking about K of RAM, not gigs.

It's not that hard to port software from one platform to another anymore.
It will defiantly be interesting to see just how far they can take their technology, and how long they can stay ahead of the Windows space. Intel is moving into efficiency cores with I think their upcoming processor but who knows if that will be able to compete with what Apple has already shipped.

The Intel architecture is dead. Even Intel is moving to something ARM based. There is too much overhead in supporting the CISC chips. The limiting factor on Apple's M series chips will be the PCIe bridge. If they can build the Mac Pro with PCIe expansion, it will be unstoppable. If not, I can't see them keeping the pro market.

A sizable portion of Apple's existing Mac market consists of creative professionals who absolutely want/need the power offered by the M1 Pro/Max. The new MacBook Pros are absolutely overkill for casual users and even most hobbyists (hence the premium price), but that's why the MacBook Air is such a compelling value and will be even more so when it gets updated next year.
