Still showing better performance for "High-end PC laptop graphics". But of course it's meaningless without specifying what it actually is.
It's showing less performance than "High-end PC laptop graphics", so by that measure we can see that it's performing slightly worse (-12.5%) than the $4700 MSI GE76 Raider's NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU (when plugged in at 160W only, performance drops significantly on battery).

In terms of performance, Apple is battling it out with the very best available in the market, comparing the performance of the M1 Max to that of a mobile GeForce RTX 3080, at 100W less power (60W vs 160W). Apple also includes a 100W TDP variant of the RTX 3080 for comparison, here, outperforming the NVIDIA discrete GPU, while still using 40% less power.

I did not want to start a new thread, as I am sure this has been discussed in the past in some form.

I just made the transition to a M1 Pro Max. I am curious to know what it would mean for the compatibility to games I played on my 2016 MacBook Pro.

This included blizzard games like Warcraft 3 reforged, StarCraft 2 & Diablo 3.

Xcom 2 & company of heroes. Can I continue to play these games on my new MacBook Pro.

From my understanding as long as the game launcher doesn't use AVX then Rosetta 2 should run those games as usual.
Do you guys think these will be way better for gaming than M1 or it will be all the same?
Depends, what do you mean by way better?

Should we expect Amazon to make a version of New World for macOS now? Probably not. Will 4AGames actually allow the Mac folk to use the new Metro Exodus engine they paid for? We will see.

You ability to play Blizzard games is based on Blizzard's willingness to support the Mac platform. And to be quite honest, they have been doing less and less for the Mac platform, not more. The performance of their games under ARM is no better than it is under INTEL... and I say that because it is poorly supported due to lack of resources. So bugs abound whether you are using the latest hardware or the very low end recommended hardware. Their response to fixing them has been abysmal on every count.

So I say this with all honesty. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT BUY A MAC if your real use case is to play games, new ones, old ones, or otherwise.

If the game is written for the MAC and ARM, then yes. If the game is a port in any form, meaning not native (Rosetta is running in emulation, not native), then not really. Better than worse, but not "better" than native.

You should be fine except for Company of Heroes, unless you mean CoH2. Note I have not tried this myself, just going by the list.

Well they have more power, so even using Rosetta2 or Parallels, they should perform better. But if a game is not available or doesn't work on a M1 then it's not going to work/be available on a M1 Pro/Max either.

I'm still not over the lack of Mini announcement yesterday. The M1 Mini is such a nice machine for browsing/emails, reading/writing and even a quick round of <insert casual game here> (if it's available). But only two displays... meh. I want a replacement...

My MBP16 is still running circles around the M1 when it comes to graphics, but I keep grabbing the Razer Blade Studio with RTX5000 (dual boot Linux/Win) these days and also just ordered a Lenovo X1C for lightweight travelling (will also dual boot). Been thinking about dumping every Mac (desktop and laptop) I currently have and grab a MBP14 with Max SoC (24-cores, 32GB) to hook it up at home to three monitors dual running macOS and Linux (in VM) for lightweight tasks. And if I'd need a mobile Mac again, I could just pull it out, even though I hate the current design.

I'm still running a dedicated PC (Win/Linux) with Titan RTX which also serves as gaming rig. And in the office, I'm mostly on my Dell Precision as well. Decisions, decisions...

You probably could straight trade the Titan RTX for a new Mac in todays second hand market, lol

That is true, but there's no way I'm getting rid of that card. ;)

I just need Nvidia, there's no way around it. I would just like to have a nice low power machine for lightweight tasks but the ability to connect three monitors. Low power draw means less heat and allows me to leave AC off in the summer. The M1 Mini is low power, but fails with the displays. The MBP16 (Intel) can do the displays, but needs more power and more annoying blows out a ton of heat which is loud when running external displays. Running it with eGPU eats up additional power, but makes it quieter. Guess Apple has nothing that fits my needs right now.

I'm fine with turning on the PC rig when I need some more power/gaming. I guess in the end it will be an impulse buy for me and I might just grab a MBP14 when I feel like it while in the store. I will probably trade in Mini and MBP16 then. Will keep a MBP13 as backup. Have some more Apple stuff tucked away on some shelves. I guess I have an Apple problem.

Back to gaming, PoE Scourge is out on friday, anyone in?

Despite the power of the M1, there is probably no reason to buy a mac if you want to play games. At this point, all the new games I play are on console, if any, so if there comes a time where I can still play SC2 or Heroes of the Storm on an M1 Pro/Max mac, I will make the transition from my 2019 Intel 16" MBP to an Apple silicon one.

I highly doubt the mac userbase for either of those games is large enough for Blizzard to port those games to the M1 chip. I've resigned myself to that fact.

This is the primary reason imo. I've said it before myself, Macs are a niche product and the return on investment in spending money to develop a mac version of the game may not make sense for most publishers/developers. Its just not developing costs, its adding complexities to a developer's work, since now they have to code, debug and support another platform's code line. Its adds an increase in complexity and cost, but with only a small subset of mac buyers interested in gaming will developers/publishers make a profit? Don't forget, we're not talking about Apple's entire line - just the MBP, the numbers imo speak for themselves.

Not to mention that PC gaming as a whole is slowly dying off, nonwithstanding that most western studios just lost the biggest market in the world.

I wouldn't say dying, but changing, for instance, I have to believe the GPU shortage and price increases on other components will possibly accelerate streaming services and their allure. I mean why spend 3k on an RTX 3080 when you can subscribe to one of many services that will basically let you play a game on their hardware and stream it to you

you think a AAA company is going a ton of money to make a mac version when Apple's only "capable" machines are two high end laptops meant for professionals?

if only Apple were a trillion dollar company, they could just throw some $$$ at a AAA publisher or just buy one and put the whole gaming thing to rest once and for all... unfortunately, they are barely keeping their heads above water losing money on all of their products..

Thanks for the input guys. Hopefully when my MacBook Pro max arrives, I can play some games.

I actually heard on YouTube that steam is being updated to support M1 macs. I am not sure if it’s credible .

For gaming they are.
You don't need to make the asterisks for him. It's a weird statement to make as a moderator of MACrumors.com regardless.

Macs are indeed a niche within the niche of hardcore PC gaming, but that's not what he said. Macs are not by any standard a niche. And as for gaming as a whole, guess who's the biggest player?

May be the lowest common denominator to you, but financially, they are miles ahead of desktop and console... which is why the market is, indeed, changing.
It doesn’t contradict the definition, the lowest common denominator is the largest market.

I mean you can ask @xWhiplash why they aren't making a game for the biggest player in the market then. ??‍♂️
